Abstract

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Wordwall, a gamified digital platform for vocabulary learning, in improving vocabulary mastery and procedural-writing quality among first-year vocational students in a Karawitan (traditional arts) program. Using a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design, two intact classes received different instructional treatments across three meetings held over a two-week period, the experimental class completed Wordwall activities, whereas the control class followed conventional methods. After initial differences were controlled with ANCOVA, the experimental class showed a significantly larger vocabulary gain (partial η² = 0.25) and greater improvements in lexical variety and technical accuracy in writing than the control class. These findings indicate that integrating Wordwall boosts student engagement and successfully transfers technical vocabulary to procedural texts. Therefore, teachers can adopt vocationally themed Wordwall tasks to accelerate language learning, and policy-makers should provide training and digital infrastructure so that interactive tools like Wordwall can be implemented widely in vocational schools.

To collect data, the writers used a questionnaire that evaluated variables such as teachers’ emotional intelligence and students’ learning engagement in EFL classes. The descriptive analysis method was used to analyze data, while Pearson Product Moment with SPSS 22.0 for Windows was used for bivariate analysis. The research findings suggest that the emotional intelligence level of teachers is medium from the student's point of view with an average score of 10.07, while from the principal's assessment, it is high scoring an average of 12.2. There was a moderate level of students’ learning engagement, with a mean score of 12.46. The method used is a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest type quasi-experimental design. The research sample consisted of 24 eleventh-grade students from SMA Istiqomah Bandung, selected through purposive sampling technique. The research instrument in the form of an oral test was administered before and after the treatment of learning with song media. The results of the data analysis show a significant increase in the average student scores, from 64.17 on the pretest to 85.04 on the posttest. The paired sample t-test produced a significance value of p < 0.001, indicating that the use of the song was effective in improving students' speaking abilities in the context of asking and giving opinions. Thus, popular songs can be used as an enjoyable and contextual alternative learning medium to enhance students' oral competence in English language learning at the secondary school level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contextual meaning of the word "cry" found in the texts of children's books by Enid Blyton and to explore how this word is translated into Indonesian. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research employs semantic analysis to understand the variations in meaning and emotional nuances contained in the use of the word "cry" across different narrative contexts. The qualitative semantic method allows the researcher to delve into the meanings of words within social and cultural contexts, as well as how these meanings can shift depending on the situation and the emotions of the characters. Data were collected from four purposively selected stories, and analysis was conducted on ten sentences containing the word "cry." The findings reveal that "cry" is a polysemous word that conveys a range of meanings, including expressions of joy, fear, and mockery, all of which are influenced by the narrative context. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding contextual meaning in literary analysis and translation, as well as the challenges faced in preserving emotional nuances when translating polysemous words.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between teaching style and students’ writing ability, focusing on the mediating role of feedback practice among tenth-grade EFL students at MA Bandung. Recognizing that effective writing instruction relies not only on the instructional methods used but also on how feedback is delivered, the research addresses ongoing challenges caused by inconsistent pedagogical and feedback practices in the classroom. A quantitative approach with a correlational  design was employed, involving 38 students who completed questionnaires on teaching style and feedback practice and participated in a standardized writing assessment. Data were analyzed using multiple regression and mediation tests to assess both direct and indirect effects. The findings reveal a significant positive relationship between teaching style and feedback practice, and between teaching style and writing ability. However, feedback practice did not significantly mediate the relationship between teaching style and students' writing performance. These results suggest that while effective teaching promotes better feedback environments, feedback alone may not enhance writing outcomes unless it is clearly communicated and well-integrated into instruction. The study underscores the importance of adopting teaching style and feedback practice and enhancing the quality not just the quantity of feedback in EFL writing instruction.
