Abstract

This study delves into the motivation and future orientation of prospective religious teachers in Indonesia, exploring the factors that influence their decision to choose an educational path as spiritual educators. The focus of the research was to understand the factors that influenced their decision in choosing education as a religious teacher. Through a qualitative approach with the phenomenological interview method, data was obtained from respondents who revealed that their main motivation was the desire to make a positive impact on students' spiritual lives. Religious values such as love, service, and moral responsibility are the main drivers in choosing this profession. Personal experience related to religious practices and involvement in faith communities also contribute significantly to their motivation. The future picture of the respondents shows the aspiration to be educators with integrity and agents of change in the community. This research suggests the need to develop spiritually-based career programs for prospective religious teachers, which can assist them in their future roles as leaders and servants in the context of value-based education. These findings are expected to provide in-depth insights for the study of education and student character development in the context of religious education.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' understanding of the First Friday Mass at Sekolah Tinggi Agama Katolik (STAKat) Negeri Pontianak, its impact on their spirituality as future Catholic Religious Education teachers, and the obstacles they face in participating in the mass. The research was conducted from July 30 to September 9, 2024, at STAKat Negeri Pontianak. Informants in this study consisted of three main groups: students from the 2022, a lecturer, and the Vice Chairman III. The findings showed that students at STAKat Negeri Pontianak had a solid understanding of the First Friday Mass as a form of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and an essential part of the Catholic faith. This mass has a positive impact on students' spirituality, especially in shaping attitudes of faithfulness to God's word, compassion for others, forgiveness, humility, and a willingness to sacrifice qualities vital for future Catholic Religious Education teachers. However, participation in the mass was hindered by several challenges, such as health issues, conflicting academic or work schedules, and a lack of motivation that causes some students to perceive the mass as less important. Nevertheless, the First Friday Mass continued to play a significant role in supporting students’ spiritual development.

Abstract

Since the expiration of the Community Activities Restrictions Enforcement on 13 December 2022, The Catholic Church has also resumed in-person (offline) Eucharistic celebrations. Virtual Eucharistic celebrations continue in select parishes, particularly within the Archdiocese of Pontianak. This study examines how Catholic Generation Z (Gen-Z) individuals— a cohort inherently familiar with the virtual world—respond to virtual versus in-person Eucharistic celebrations. From the perspective of liturgical theology, the Eucharist should ideally be celebrated in person unless circumstances necessitate a virtual format. This study employs a quantitative approach with an online questionnaire sent via WhatsApp to 250 Catholic Generation Z respondents in several parishes. The results show that although offline Mass was rated as spiritually better, practical conditions made online Masses also preferred by the majority of respondents. This research provides insights for the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Pontianak in formulating pastoral approaches that better suit the spiritual and practical needs of Generation Z in the context of multicultural society of Pontianak.
