Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic that has occurred since the beginning of 2019 has changed various aspects of human life. The rapid spread of the virus has restricted human activities, ranging from economic, educational, to socio-religious activities. This situation is a new thing for humans giving rise to various experiences. This study aimed to understand individual psychological experiences, including thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and perceptions in facing the pandemic in various age groups. This research consisted of two stages: the grounded theory survey approach and the phenomenological approach. In the first stage, as many as 447 participants of adolescence and early, middle to late adulthood have filled out an online questionnaire via the google form. The next stage was interviews with 15 participants related to experiences in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview results were then analyzed using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis method. The results showed that most adolescents described the COVID-19 pandemic as a crisis, while most of the adult group described it with negative emotions. All age groups decided on health as their main concern. Most of the participants considered that there were things to be grateful for during the COVID-19 pandemic. Groups of adolescents and early and middle adults made their family the thing they were most grateful for during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the late adult group placed health as most grateful for. Gratitude was also believed to be a provision for someone to survive and see the positive side of an unpleasant event.

Abstract

This study discusses the occurrence of possession disorders in Makassar. The method used is a qualitative grounded theory method with data collection using semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The participants were three women, each of whom had experienced at least two possession disorders. The criteria for possession disorder refer to PPDGJ III. The results indicated that parenting, the role of the father figure, and the relationship with the mother, as well as the transmission of abusive religious beliefs were more likely the causes of possession disorders in the Makassar/Indonesian context. The abuse experienced is more related to parenting patterns than physical or sexual abuse as appears in the Western literature. Future research that deepens parenting themes and religious beliefs is important to understand the occurrence of other psychopathologies besides possession disorders.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the concept of well-being among the Balinese Gandhian and the processes needed to reach such condition. The participants were the Balinese Gandhian from the Gedong Gandhi Ashram and the Ashram Gandhi Puri. Ethnographic perspective and phenomenological approach were applied in this study. Results reveal mokshartham jagadhita as a Balinese indigenous concept of well-being, referring to the physical and psycho- spiritual well-being which consists of: suka tan mewali duka (non-dual happiness), shaantih (peace), and harmony. This condition can be reached by the fulfillment of the physical, social, and psycho- spiritual needs, which transforms the personality into the ideal state of sthita-pradnya. The search for meaning was also involved during the attainment of this state. The aforementioned process involves the cognitive, affective, behavioral, and transcendental dimensions. The concept of mokshartham jagaditha is compared with the Western concept of well-being as well as with other concepts from Eastern traditions.
