Abstract

Introduction: This study examines the food consumption patterns and food security status of corn farming households in Paterongan Village, Galis Subdistrict, Bangkalan Regency, Madura Island, Indonesia. The research is conducted within the context of the low food security levels in Indonesia, despite the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since 2015. Paterongan Village serves as an interesting case study due to its high corn production but also a high poverty rate, which raises concerns regarding household-level food security. This study aims to identify the factors influencing food security among corn farmers in the area. Methods: This research uses a descriptive quantitative approach, collecting data through interviews and questionnaires with 76 female corn farmers. The 24-hour food recall technique was applied to assess food consumption patterns and calculate the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS). Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing food security. Results: The findings indicate that the food consumption patterns are relatively limited in diversity, with most households primarily consuming cereals, vegetables, oils, legumes, and fish. The average HDDS score is 7.1, with 67% of households classified as food insecure. Conclusion: The logistic regression analysis identified education level, household income, and the utilization of home gardens as significant factors that improve food security.

Abstract

The utilization of high-quality seeds has a positive impact on increasing agricultural production. However, price factors hinder the willingness to pay among rice farmers in Madura Island, Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the willingness to pay (WTP) of rice farmers in Madura Island for certified rice seeds and the factors influencing it. The research was conducted on Madura Island through a survey of 95 rice farmers. We used the contingent valuation method to analyze the farmers' WTP and binary logistic regression to identify the factors influencing their willingness to pay. The results indicate that the WTP of rice farmers in Madura Island for certified rice seeds is Rp145,125 per 10 kg. This willingness to pay is significantly influenced by factors such as age, education, experience, and participation in farmer groups. Based on these findings, we hope that more farmers will use certified rice seeds, seed producers will set prices that do not exceed the farmers' payment capacity, and the local government will optimize the role of farmer groups.

Abstract

An increasing amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) affects the planet and people. As a primary contributor to climate change, CO2 has been a subject of discussion among researchers. Many have been studying the complex relationship and impact of CO2. However, a study examining the influence of increased CO2 emissions on human subjective well-being is limited. This study aims to fill the gap by utilizing a sample of 9,724 Southeast Asians from the Seventh World Values Survey (2017-2021). Well-being is measured using a subjective approach, such as happiness and life satisfaction. The ordered probit regression analysis indicates that increased per capita CO2 emissions decrease happiness and life satisfaction. Additionally, the higher individuals' financial and health levels, the higher their relationship with their happiness and life satisfaction will be. This study encourages further research investigating a specific country's relationship between CO2 emissions and the well-being of its population.

Abstract

Food security must be ensured not only at the national and regional levels but also at the household level. The aims of this research were to examine the status and factors influencing food security among maize farmer households in the study area. A cross-sectional study was conducted between September and October 2023. A total of 151 households from two villages were chosen through a multi-stage sampling method. The household food security status was evaluated using the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS). A binary logistic regression model was utilized to determine the factors influencing food security among maize farmer households. The study found that the majority (55%) of maize farmers experienced food insecurity, with an average HDDS of 7.23. The regression analysis indicated that household income, education level of the housewife, diversity of farm production, and cash transfers had a positive impact on food security.  The findings imply that improving household income, promoting education (especially for housewives), encouraging diversified farming practices, and providing cash transfers are effective measures to enhance food security among maize farmers. These implications can guide policymakers and development practitioners in designing interventions to address food insecurity in agricultural communities. Enhancing the nutritional knowledge of housewives and promoting the cultivation of a greater variety of food plants in home gardens are recommended to improve household food security.
