Abstract

Abstract This research was intended to find out the correlation between students’ ability in grammar and vocabulary with students’ writing paragraph achievements. There was a correlation between students’ ability in grammar and vocabulary with students’ writing paragraph achievements. From the calculation above it found that tobserved = 5.754whereas the ttable Keyword: grammar ability, vocabulary ability. Writing paragraph achievement = 2.009. It shows that correlation between students’ ability in grammar and vocabulary with students’ writing paragraph achievements was significant at 0.05. From the result, the researcher found that there was correlation of the students’ ability in grammar and vocabulary with students’ writing paragraph achievements. This means that the correlation of the students’ ability in grammar and vocabulary with students’ writing paragraph achievements.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain data on improving English reading comprehension skills through the SQ4R method for class X students. The research subjects were students in class X.in the second semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. This research was carried out using the Kemmis and Mc. Taggart carried out with the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The results of the study using the SQ4R method showed that the data obtained from the evaluation test of reading comprehension of students who scored 75 in the first cycle was 55.55% and in the second cycle it was 83.33%. While the monitoring of teacher and student activities in the first cycle of the first meeting was 55% and the second meeting was 70%, while the second cycle of the first meeting was 85% and the second meeting was 90%. Thus, reading comprehension using the SQ4R method can improve students' reading comprehension skills in class X

Abstract

The objective of the research was to improve the students’ reading achievement of grade X students at SMKN 1 Beringin academic year 2018-2019 by using the lecturing technique. The researcher used the experimental research. The population of the research was grade of students X TKJ1 and X TKJ2, and two classes were chosen as sample of the research in which there were 32 students for experimental class, and 32 students for control group. The actions implemented in this research were using lecturing technique, giving more explanation in English, making use of the LCD projector optimally, and providing activities that enabled the students to improve reading achievement. The research results of the resesarch showed that the use of lecturing technique in the English teaching and learning process was effective to improve the students’ reading achievement. There was an increase in the means score from 8.43 in pre-test to 25.31 in the post-test. There were some good improvements in some aspects such as their familiarity in reading descriptive texts in English. Also, they become actively participating in discussions during the teaching and learning process. They were more aware of mistakes due to correction from other students. In addition, this technique successfully attracted the attention of students. In short, they understood comprehensively the purpose of the text that had been given.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether questioning technique and critical thinking can help improve reading comprehension ability in students enrolled in XII Grade Mathematics and XII Grade Science. The study used a quasi-experimental design in which a control group was pre-tested and a post-test group was tested. This study looks at the students of State Senior High School 13 Medan. The research sample used to determine the results of the experiment was chosen from among the students in the class, with a random selection being made from each group. The data analysis used in this study is an indication of the intelligence of the participants. The Mann-Whitney test is used as a method for testing hypotheses. The study found that questioning techniques and critical thinking help improve students’ reading comprehension skills. The effectiveness of students' critical thinking skills is higher in the experimental class who use the effective questioning technique in Unit XII MIA 1 than in the control class in Unit XII MIS 1.

Abstract

This research discussed the effect of using YouTube animation videos on students' English vocabulary mastery at SMA Negeri 2 Tebing Tinggi. The formulation of the problem is: for the first time, students usually misinterpret the word, then have difficulty pronouncing it. The objective of this research was: to determine whether or not there was a significant effect and difference on students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery before and after being taught using animated videos. The population were students of grade X SMA Negeri 2 Tebing Tinggi which consisted of two classes. So the sample was grade X MIA 4 consisted of 29 students as the experimental group (using animated youtube videos) and X MIA 1 consisted of 29 students as control groups (without using animated youtube videos). The results in the experimental group showed that the mean value of the pre-test was 69.89 while the average value of the post-test was 78.96. The results in the control group showed that the average value of the pre-test was 55.37 while the post-test was the average test score was 58.51. The results of data analysis, the value of t-test > t-table, where the t-table is 1.674 and the result of the t-test is 7.55 so that the t-test is higher than the t-table. It was concluded that the effect of using youtube animated videos was more significant than the effect without using youtube animated videos on students' vocabulary learning achievement.

Abstract

This research deals the effect of picture series on students in writing procedure text. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of picture series on students' English procedural text writing skills. This research was conducted with experimental research used in two groups. the experimental group used media in the form of picture series and control without using picture series. The subjects of this study were students of SMA Masehi Sebiru Biru class XI MIA 1 who would be the experimental group and XI IIS which would be the control group, where class XI MIA 1 consisted of 29 students and XI IIS consisted of 24 students. This study used a written test to obtain data. After analyzing the data, the average value of the two groups was obtained where the experimental group got an average score of 85 and the control group 79.1. Based on the calculation results show that using the media in the form of picture series is higher than without using picture series. Picture series is effectively used in students writing procedure text.

Abstract

Pelajaran bahasa Inggis bagi siswa sekolah menengah atas (SMA) salah satu mata pelajaran wajib.hanya saja untuk sebagian sekolah penggunaan bahasa Inggris jarang dilakukan untuk berbagai aktivitas.untuk dapat memahami pelajaran bahasa Inggris bagi siswa sekolah menengah atas (SMA) dapat dilakukan dengan berbagai metode diantaranya metode membaca, mendengarkan musik, physical responsing, metode kumpul-kumpul dan lain-lain. Akan tetapi metode yang paling diminati siswa dalam meningkatkan pemahaman bahasa Inggris adalah metode membaca. Karena dengan adanya membaca siswa mampu untuk meningkatkan konsentrasinya dan memahami makna teks secara efektif.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perception of EFL students towards learning English during the COVID-19 pandemic at SMKN 3 Medan. The data collection is done through interviews. There were 6 students of grade XI APL 4 participating in this study. Since this research has explored students’ perception and motivation derived from students’ experiences during distance studying carried out due to the covid-19 pandemic. Descriptive research using qualitative technique is considered the right approach. The results of this study are presented descriptively to reveal students’ perception and motivation comprehensively. The result found that E-Learning got a bad perception because it was flexible and ineffective.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan capaian pemahaman bacaan berdasarkan strategi mengajar bagi siswa GRADE X SMK ESA Prakarsa. Penelitian ini menggunakan Model Pengembangan. Hal ini dilakukan untuk mengembangkan capaian pemahaman bacaan dengan menggunakan Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) sebagai strategi dalam mengajarkan pemahaman membaca. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, diperlukan pendekatan penelitian yang menyoroti upaya untuk menghasilkan strategi pengajaran pemahaman membaca. Oleh karena itu, dalam merancang model, peneliti menggunakan pendekatan Research and Development dengan mengadaptasi Borg and Gall Model. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa SMK Esa Prakarsa Langkat pada kelas XI tahun ajaran 2021/2022. Subjek penelitian ini ditentukan dengan menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Peneliti menggunakan dua teknik pengumpulan data, yaitu data deskriptif kualitatif dan data kuantitatif. Data kualitatif dan hasil kuantitatif diperoleh dari ahli validasi kuesioner, review ahli materi dan ahli strategi pengajaran. Data tersebut berasal dari uji coba lapangan yang diperoleh dari komentar atau tanggapan, hasil kuesioner dan hasil tes. Instrumen pengumpulan data dikumpulkan dengan melakukan wawancara dan menyebarkan kuesioner kepada 35 responden untuk mendapatkan kebutuhan siswa. Nilai tengah dari kuesioner yang berhubungan dengan kesesuaian materi adalah 3,22. Nilai tengahnya termasuk dalam kategori "Baik" karena berada dalam interval 2,50 < x < 3,24. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa materi bacaan sesuai untuk siswa Kelas X SMK. Peneliti menggunakan tes untuk mengetahui strategi pemahaman bacaan siswa berdasarkan strategi resiprokal questioning (request) sebagai strategi dan tes dilakukan dua kali; pre-test dan post-test. Kemudian, uji-t digunakan untuk menganalisis data. Hasil data di atas adalah nilai uji-t lebih tinggi tabel t (1 2,75 > 1. 688) pada tingkat signifikansi 0,05 untuk derajat kebebasan (df) = 35-2 = 33. Artinya, Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) berpengaruh signifikan terhadap capaian pemahaman bacaan siswa.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know the effect of scientific approach in increasing students’ ability in listening skills in SMA Negeri 6 Medan. The method of this research is quantitative experimental. Population in this research is the first grade of SMA Negeri 6 Medan which are 120 students, and the sample are 60 students as group that applied the scientific approach. The result of this research found that the grade x students of SMA Negeri 6 Medan taught by stdents’ worksheet based on scientific approach in listening skills is good and after calculating and analyzing the data of the research, is found that the grade x students of SMA Negeri 6 Medan taught by students’ worksheet based on scientific approach in listening skills is fair and also the use of students’ worksheet based on scientific approach increase the students’ listening skills to the grade X students of SMA Negeri 6 Medan, it proved on the t-table with df 58 (n = n – 2 =30+30-2= 58) at t-critical 0.05 it obtained 1,67. If compared the value of t-tale (2,17>1,67). It stated that the hypothesis is accepted. It means that the grade X students of SMA Negeri 6 Medan which taught by students’ worksheet based on scientific approach in listening skills is higher than those without students’ worksheet based on scientific approach and there were some effectiveness of using students’ worksheet in teaching listening.
