Abstract

The Mega Agenda of the Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE) project in Papua is one of the global efforts to respond the 2008 world food crisis. This project includes the procurement of food and energy barns for world needs. Around one million hectares of land were cleared for extractive industries in the form of corn, palm oil, rice and sugar cane in the hope of absorbing the local workforce. Unfortunately, this industrialization process has implications for the loss of forests as a source of life, drought, the environment polluted by extractive industrial waste, exploitation of workers also horizontal conflicts. Through the Empire and Multitude approach by Negri and Hardt the analysis leads to the occurrence of biased interests of local, national and global elites as empire in the MIFEE project. With the main principle of neoliberalism, namely the accumulation of capital, the empire exploits natural and human resources on the pretext of global interests. Seeing the struggles of the people are often accommodated by political devide et impera, the offer of multitude can be an alternative solution. Communities all over the world can help in their own ways in the simplest lines, such as reducing consumptive actions and saving lives.

Abstract

The process of industrialization is often accepted as a perfect solution to alleviating the socio-economic problems of a region. Bali through the development of industry and tourism has succeeded in boosting the regional and national economy since its early development in 1980. But on the other hand, industrial dynamics also reflect the existence of production and reproduction of risk for the community such as the privatization of public space, desacralization, marginalization and exploitation of natural and human resources Starting from this problem, this research seeks to dissect how the Balinese people respond to the tourism industry climate through a movement platform. The ForBALI social movement as an effort to thwart the Benoa Bay reclamation program is a tangible manifestation that the Bali tourism industry is felt to have negative impact on the community. ForBALI resistance is a manifestation of the community’s counter hegemony to the oligarchs who try to continue to make efforts to perpetuate power under the pretext of economic growth and absorb labor. Interestingly, a counter discourse emerged from the pro-reclamation community of Benoa Bay departing from the view that development and being able to solve various social problems. The existence of these two groups for and against reclamation indicates that there is a dialectical process related to contestation in an effort to hegemony carried out by both parties.

Abstract

The research focuses on “front and back stage” such as exposed in in-depth interviews of two drag queens: Mami Salsa and Mami Sisca, the first one from Denpasar, the second from Singaraja in North Bali. Mami Salsa started working as a drag queen in the late 90s and retired from performing in 2020. Having had a wife and children, he dresses as a man and is now considered a senior drag queen; he is not in good health, so he rarely performs and instead mentors young drag queen performers. As for Mami Sisca, “she” stopped performing as a drag queen in November 2019 and now works as a popular English teacher for kids as well as a cat and dog rescuer. She still dresses as a woman, and having gained wide social recognition during her “front stage” drag queen days, “she” is now a respected figure of Singaraja’s community. Socially integrated, both Mami Salsa and Mami Sisca show the type of positive evolution of urban tourism that shows people, place and poverty as aspects of the lives of drag queens. One of the ways that could help ordinary drag queens to follow the steps of Mami Salsa and Mami Sisca would indeed be for the hotel and restaurant association to give full recognition to their performing arts profession. This research advocates the drag queens coalition of Bali to have the pocket book and the web site to make their profession sound and legal.

Abstract

The development agenda to improve people's welfare is still the dominant discourse. In the case of the Province of Bali, since the early 1980s the development of the tourism industry with the cultural tourism axis has been the main spirit of development. One of the logical consequences of this development agenda is the commodification of sacred spaces. The commodification of sacred spaces can be seen from the social reality at Dalem Ped Temple. Where now Dalem Ped Temple is not limited to being a sacred space for a place of worship for the Hindu community, but has developed into a tourism space to a capital accumulation space for local managers and traders. Various social spaces created as a result of the commodification of sacred values in Dalem Ped Temple are referred to as heterotopia spaces. In other words, an alternative space is created in a multifunctional space that is in one place.

Abstract

The history of the 1998 reformation has become a momentum for the implementation of Indonesian democracy after the authoritarian regime of the New Order Soeharto. Through a study of three major journals, it is seen how in Indonesia's democratic system it can be positively interpreted that mass organizations can grow. Even so, there are several actions of mass organizations that lead to the nuances of violence through their various actions. If using Marx's perspective, the state will regard this resistance as a threat to democracy. Another dimension is present when trying to understand that local mass organizations with violent radicals ideally have the aim of protecting local matters from being eroded by external interests that can threaten the identity and local community. Therefore, violence is understood as a way for them to defend and fight against things that are considered threatening. State recognition of locality- based identities and groups, including how mass organizations represent the existence of locality-based communities, is important. Recognition at this level should involve and pay attention to local wisdom so that policy as a product has authority in its application in the community.

Abstract

Wedding and pre-wedding photography fall under the category of documentary photography. In Bali, these photography services are increasingly in demand, especially by the millennial generation in Denpasar City. Along with the increase in demand, the profession of wedding and pre-wedding photography has also increased. This research aims to examine the habitus that drives wedding and pre-wedding documentation photographers in Denpasar City to pursue the sector, and also how the habitus of these photographers later turns out to affect the personal style of the photos produced. This research uses Pierre Bourdieu's habitus concept as the basis for analyzing the problems that occur. The method used in analyzing the phenomenon of habitus of wedding and pre-wedding photographers in Denpasar City is descriptive-explanatory with a qualitative approach. From the research conducted, it was found that: 1) The habitus of wedding and pre-wedding photographers in Denpasar City is composed of the capitals they have and the realm where they practice. Capitals such as symbolic, cultural, economic, or social are found in different forms in each informant, and 2) Photographers' personal style is formed through their mindset, behavior, and preferences that are influenced by their social environment, culture, and past experiences. These habitual dispositions shape the way photographers act or respond in certain situations. Habitus can also influence the photographic techniques used in framing, composition and photo editing. Keywords: Wedding and pre-wedding photography, Photographer, Habitus, personal style.
