Abstract

The process of industrialization is often accepted as a perfect solution to alleviating the socio-economic problems of a region. Bali through the development of industry and tourism has succeeded in boosting the regional and national economy since its early development in 1980. But on the other hand, industrial dynamics also reflect the existence of production and reproduction of risk for the community such as the privatization of public space, desacralization, marginalization and exploitation of natural and human resources Starting from this problem, this research seeks to dissect how the Balinese people respond to the tourism industry climate through a movement platform. The ForBALI social movement as an effort to thwart the Benoa Bay reclamation program is a tangible manifestation that the Bali tourism industry is felt to have negative impact on the community. ForBALI resistance is a manifestation of the community’s counter hegemony to the oligarchs who try to continue to make efforts to perpetuate power under the pretext of economic growth and absorb labor. Interestingly, a counter discourse emerged from the pro-reclamation community of Benoa Bay departing from the view that development and being able to solve various social problems. The existence of these two groups for and against reclamation indicates that there is a dialectical process related to contestation in an effort to hegemony carried out by both parties.

Abstract

The development agenda to improve people's welfare is still the dominant discourse. In the case of the Province of Bali, since the early 1980s the development of the tourism industry with the cultural tourism axis has been the main spirit of development. One of the logical consequences of this development agenda is the commodification of sacred spaces. The commodification of sacred spaces can be seen from the social reality at Dalem Ped Temple. Where now Dalem Ped Temple is not limited to being a sacred space for a place of worship for the Hindu community, but has developed into a tourism space to a capital accumulation space for local managers and traders. Various social spaces created as a result of the commodification of sacred values in Dalem Ped Temple are referred to as heterotopia spaces. In other words, an alternative space is created in a multifunctional space that is in one place.

Abstract

Tourism expansion has increasingly become a dominant development strategy in many coastal and island regions of Indonesia. While tourism-led development is often associated with economic growth and infrastructure improvement, recent studies highlight its socio-ecological consequences, particularly the emergence of resource conflicts and uneven distribution of benefits. However, existing studies largely focus on vertical conflicts between local communities, investors, and the state, while limited attention has been given to the ways tourism development can generate horizontal conflicts among local communities themselves. This article addresses this gap by examining the ownership dispute over Nyuh Kukuh Port in Nusa Penida, Bali. This research employs a qualitative case study approach to investigate how tourism-driven economic transformation reshapes local resource relations and triggers inter-community conflict. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving community members, local leaders, and relevant stakeholders. The findings show that the rapid growth of tourism since the early 2010s has transformed coastal livelihoods from seaweed farming and fisheries toward tourism-related services. The increasing economic value of port infrastructure generated new forms of competition over access and control of coastal resources. Unequal distribution of financial contributions from tourism transportation operators intensified tensions between Ped Village and Kampung Toya Pakeh Village, leading to competing claims over port ownership. The dispute further evolved through identity mobilization and local elite contestation. This study contributes to political ecology scholarship by demonstrating how tourism development can reconfigure local power relations and transform environmental resource disputes into horizontal conflicts mediated by identity politics.

Abstract

The strong patriarchal norms in Hindu-Balinese society are reflected in the belief that marriage is a stage of life and a moral responsibility to maintain the continuity of the family line, especially sons. For Hindu-Balinese women, this is a reproductive obligation in addition to domestic, public and customary burdens. Ironically, they often lack control over decision-making or ownership of resources, so the post-marriage crisis pushes Gen-Z women to redefine the meaning of marriage and family. This study aims to reveal the views of Gen-Z Hindu-Balinese women in interpreting marriage as a life choice. Through qualitative methods with a life history approach and Stuart Hall's identity perspective, this study shows that Gen-Z negotiates their identity as “Balinese women.” This negotiation process emerges from critical reflections on their experiences of growing up as Hindu-Balinese women, as well as from their observations of post-marital realities. For them, marriage is not simply a moral obligation or a stage in life, but rather a logical choice that aligns with their mental, economic, and personal autonomy. In other words, the uniqueness of this research lies in the efforts of Gen-Z Hindu-Balinese women to negotiate a space of independence without completely abandoning their cultural roots.
