Abstract

This study examines efforts to preserve Javanese krama inggil (KI) through traditional cultural activities in Komering Putih Village, amidst the challenges of its declining use in daily communication. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, this study highlights the important role of activities such as wayang (W), campur sari (CS), and kitab kuning (KK) in maintaining the continued use of KI. The findings show that these cultural activities contribute significantly to the preservation of KI in formal and ceremonial contexts. Nonetheless, the younger generation (YG) tends to be limited in their everyday use of KI, preferring the informal ngoko (NG) variant. This research emphasizes the need for an integrated preservation strategy to bridge the use of KI in ceremonial contexts and everyday life, so that this language remains a dynamic element in Javanese cultural identity.

Abstract

The move from teacher-centered to learner-centered pedagogy, which empowered students to take charge of their learning, has attracted the researcher to conduct this study. This paper explored the types of vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) used by intermediate learners of English as a foreign language in Lampung universities and the relationship between VLSs and their speaking ability. It also attempted to find out the most-used and least-used strategies for learning the vocabulary of the English language. It adopted a quantitative correlational research design. One hundred seventy-nine participants as intermediate learners from nine different universities in Lampung participated in this study. An adopted 50-item questionnaire of vocabulary learning strategies was used for data collection. This questionnaire was distributed in two separate sessions: online via the Google Form link and offline through a printed questionnaire. The descriptive statistics analysis of the questionnaire's responses showed that the participants were medium strategy users (mean=3,11). Determination and memory strategies were the most frequently used, while social was the least used. Pearson correlation coefficient on SPSS revealed a fragile relationship between VLSs and the participants' speaking ability where the value is r< 0,30 (r= 0,089). Finally, it is recommended that the teachers help their students become initiative and take responsibility for their success by providing them with a sense of vocabulary learning strategies to enhance their vocabulary knowledge. Moreover, teachers should present a wide range of (VLSs) to their students for both a classroom-related setting and self-directed vocabulary learning.

Abstract

This research was conducted in response to the ongoing challenges faced by students in learning English writing skills in non-English-speaking countries, particularly in making writing engaging and effective. The study focuses on the use of Padlet as a digital tool to improve students' personal letter-writing skills. The purpose of this research is to determine whether Padlet significantly improves students' writing scores and affects their overall writing abilities. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group was employed. The participants were grade XI students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekalongan, divided into an experimental class using Padlet and a control class using the conventional method. The research used writing tests as the main instrument, assessed through five aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using t-tests to determine statistical significance. The findings show that students taught using Padlet scored higher in all aspects of writing, indicating a significant improvement and positive effect on their writing skills. It can be concluded that Padlet is an effective medium for enhancing writing quality and student engagement. This research suggests that teachers should consider integrating interactive digital tools, such as Padlet, into writing instruction to overcome challenges and boost students' motivation and performance.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of ChatGPT in enhancing the speaking skills of EFL undergraduate students in the Hospital Administration program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, involving 42 first-semester students divided into two groups: 21 students in ARS 1 as the experimental group and 21 students in ARS 2 as the control group. The experimental group received treatment using specific prompts designed to initiate conversations with ChatGPT. Data were collected through oral tests conducted before and after the intervention (pre-test and post-test). The results indicate a statistically significant improvement in the speaking skills of students in the experimental group. Hypothesis testing showed a significant value of <0.000 for the first hypothesis and 0.004 for the second, both below the threshold of 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypotheses were accepted. In conclusion, the use of ChatGPT had a positive and significant effect on improving the speaking skills of EFL students in the Hospital Administration program. The results highlight the potential of ChatGPT to supplement classroom speaking activities, while contributing to research on AI in EFL learning.
