Abstract

Social change and modernization have impacted various traditions in Indonesia, including Ngunjung Buyut, an ancestral homage tradition that holds significant meaning for the Indramayu community, West Java. In the context of changing times, this tradition has undergone a shift in values. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method conducted in Penganjang Village, Indramayu Regency. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews and participatory observation involving informants from both older and younger generations. Data analysis focuses on identifying forms of cultural capital that have emerged within the Ngunjung Buyut tradition in the contemporary era. Findings indicate that objectified cultural capital, such as ngarak processions and artistic performances, has become the primary attraction for younger participants, shifting the focus away from religious activities like communal prayer. While these supporting activities have successfully increased youth engagement, this shift poses a risk to the internalization of religious values. Additionally, this transformation has created a new dynamic in social solidarity, where recreational aspects now overshadow the tradition’s original spiritual significance.

Abstract

Abstract

Women's participation in the public sphere cannot be separated from geographical environmental factors and societal construction. Like women in Cimahi City, they prefer to work as factory workers because basically the Cimahi City environment is dominated by industrial areas. This is reflected in the female factory workers who work at PT Fujitex, Cimahi City. However, it cannot be denied that their contribution to the public sphere will have consequences for social institutions, especially the family. Because, women who have worked will certainly carry out several roles at once, so it is feared that they will not be able to carry out their roles well. Through this research, researchers are interested in analyzing how gender relationship patterns are applied between husbands and men in order to carry out their roles optimally. The approach used by researchers is a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques used by researchers are interviews, observation and literature study. To find out the pattern of gender relations in the families of female factory workers, researchers used Moser's gender analysis technique which was identified through divisions into household management, child care, financial management and decision making. The results of the research show that the families of female factory workers adhere to an equal partner pattern which is manifested through household management and childcare which is carried out fairly between husband and wife. They work together to carry out their roles. Meanwhile, financial management and decision making are left to the wife while prioritizing deliberation so that each family member is open to each other.

Abstract

A film called Night Butterfly produced by MD Pictures presents the realities of women's lives as commercial sex workers. The purpose of this study was to find out how women commercial sex workers were represented in the film Night Butterfly. This research uses Roland Barthles' semiotic analysis model using the approach of social exchange theory. The method used is the analysis of scenes that have symbols, meanings, and messages played by Laura's character in representing women commercial sex workers. The result of this study is to know the social reality of women from the side of sex workers as commodities in the gluttonous capitalist economic machine. In addition, the scenes from the film give a clear picture of the reality and the driving factors for a person to do the work, namely economic factors, so that the assumption is formed that marginalized groups are easier to portray and represent in the form of films, as well as women. Like Laura's character being further marginalized by focusing on sexuality.

Abstract

This study explores the Implications of Father's Parenting on Children's Character with a special focus on the application of Sundanese character values by applying Sundanese cultural values such as cageur (healthy), bageur (good), bener (right), singer (introspective), and pinter (smart) in fostering children's character. This research was conducted using qualitative methods and phenomenological design. The focus of this research is Sundanese fathers who live in Bandung City. The city of Bandung was chosen because its population is dominated by Sundanese Ethnicity. The research was conducted within a period of 6 months, namely February to July 2024 with a preliminary study of Sundanese Fathers' Parenting Patterns in several previous studies that have been conducted since 2016. The focus of informants in this study is Sundanese fathers who come from families with wives who also work. In the condition that both of them are working, this study tries to provide an overview of their cooperation in childcare. The results of this study show that fathers' parenting in Sundanese families, which apply Sundanese cultural values such as cageur (healthy), bageur (good), bener (right), singer (introspective), and pinter (smart), have a significant impact on children's character development. Through the application of these values, fathers play an important role in supporting children's cognitive and socio-emotional development, in accordance with the developmental theories of Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson. Authoritarian parenting can inhibit children's cognitive and social-emotional development, while authoritative parenting supports a balance between discipline and independence, and permissive parenting tends to reduce children's discipline and responsibility. Overall, the integration of Sundanese Cultural Values in fathers' parenting not only shapes children's strong and stable character, but also supports holistic development that includes cognitive, social, and emotional aspects.

Abstract

Neighbourhood safety remains a critical urban challenge, with social disorganisation theory positing that structural factors like poverty and residential instability weaken community cohesion and amplify crime perceptions. While Scotland has seen declining crime rates, persistent violence in deprived areas, and emerging disorder in affluent communities necessitate safety measures across socioeconomic situations. This study examines how social disorganisation influences perceptions of safety across affluent and deprived neighbourhoods in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland. Using a cross-sectional survey of 610 residents, we employed multiple regression and ANOVA models to analyse six key indicators of social disorder (noise, vandalism, verbal abuse, burglary, unsupervised children, and physical assault) against self-reported feelings of safety. Data were transformed using the Item Response Theory and Rasch Model to enable parametric analysis, with cross-validation confirming model robustness (R² 0.92).  Results revealed that verbal abuse (β = -0.565) and physical assault (β = -0.499) were the strongest predictors of reduced safety, with deprived areas exhibiting heightened vulnerability. Counterintuitively, affluent neighbourhoods reported higher perceived disorder for vandalism and unsupervised children, suggesting socioeconomic differences in reporting behaviours or tolerance thresholds. City-specific variations emerged: vandalism significantly impacted safety in Glasgow’s deprived areas but not Edinburgh’s, highlighting the need for locally tailored interventions.  The findings reinforce social disorganisation theory while demonstrating its nuanced application across socioeconomic contexts. Urban safety research by incorporating minor incivilities often overlooked in crime statistics, offering evidence for holistic approaches to neighbourhood security.

Abstract

The amount of violence and harassment that women still experience in the workplace shows that there is no safe and comfortable place for women in the public environment, especially the workplace. The 2023 International Labour Organisation (ILO) Survey results also indicate that Indonesia is among the nations experiencing an emergency scenario of workplace violence. Based on this background, the research aims to shed light on the reality of workplace violence and harassment against women from a gender perspective. The literature review method was employed in this study. This approach uses numerous references from books, articles, and earlier research journals. This study used secondary data for its data collection. International journal databases like Google Scholar, Pubmed, Researchget, and Crossref were used for journal searches. The terms "violence and harassment of women in the workplace" and "violence against women at the workplace" are used in the search for data sources. The findings of the research point to the complexity of the issue of violence and harassment against women in the workplace, which is influenced by a variety of individual factors, structures, and norms. Through the individual aspect, it is understood that women are always portrayed by inherent gender stereotypes that can lead to violence and harassment. Meanwhile, through the aspects of structure and norms, it is understood that there is a role of power relations and hierarchical structures attached to gender identity in shaping an environment that allows violence and harassment to occur. A strategic step that can be taken is to incorporate the institutionalisation of gender issues coupled with an understanding of gender from the human side to place every gender, both women and men, together to feel safe.
