Abstract

Striae gravidarum (SG), commonly known as stretch marks, is a common concern during pregnancy. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is traditionally used for skin health and may have potential in SG prevention. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to assess the efficacy of topical VCO in preventing and reducing the severity of SG among pregnant women in Kerinci Regency, Indonesia. Pregnant women (n=200) in their second trimester were randomized to receive either topical VCO or a placebo (standard emollient) twice daily. SG severity was assessed using a modified striae gravidarum assessment scale (SGAS) at baseline, 32 weeks gestation, and six weeks postpartum. VCO application was associated with a significantly lower incidence of new SG compared to the placebo (25% vs. 45%, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the VCO group showed a significant reduction in SG severity at 32 weeks and postpartum (mean SGAS scores: VCO 1.8 vs. placebo 2.6 at 32 weeks, p < 0.05; VCO 1.4 vs. placebo 2.2 at postpartum, p < 0.01). No adverse effects were reported. In conclusion, topical VCO appears to be safe and effective in preventing new SG and reducing the severity of existing SG during pregnancy. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and long-term effects.

Abstract

Introduction: Vaginal discharge (leukorrhea) is a common gynecological complaint among women of childbearing age. While physiological discharge is normal, pathological discharge can be indicative of underlying infections or conditions. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of soursop leaf infusion (Annona muricata L.) as a complementary treatment for vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Lolo Community Health Center, Kerinci Regency, Jambi, Indonesia. Women aged 15-49 years presenting with vaginal discharge were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (soursop leaf infusion) or the control group (standard care). The intervention group received soursop leaf infusion twice daily for seven days, while the control group received standard care as per the health center's protocol. The primary outcome was the reduction in vaginal discharge symptoms (amount, color, odor, and associated discomfort) after seven days. Secondary outcomes included changes in vaginal pH and microbiological assessment. Results: A total of 130 women participated in the study (65 in each group). After seven days, the intervention group showed a significantly greater reduction in vaginal discharge symptoms compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The amount, color, and odor of discharge improved significantly in the intervention group, along with a reduction in associated discomfort such as itching and irritation. Vaginal pH was also normalized in the intervention group, and microbiological assessment revealed a decrease in pathogenic microorganisms. Conclusion: Soursop leaf infusion (Annona muricata L) appears to be a safe and effective complementary treatment for vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age. Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties may contribute to its beneficial effects. Further research is warranted to explore its long-term efficacy and potential use in combination with conventional therapies.

Abstract

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia is a prevalent health concern among pregnant women globally, including Indonesia. Red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor), rich in iron and other nutrients, holds promise as a natural intervention. This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the efficacy of red spinach juice in improving hemoglobin levels in pregnant women in West Sumatra. Methods: This study enrolled 180 pregnant women (18-35 years) with mild anemia (hemoglobin 10.0-10.9 g/dL) in their second trimester. Participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (daily red spinach juice, 200 mL) or the control group (standard iron supplementation) for eight weeks. Hemoglobin levels were measured at baseline, week four, and week eight. Results: A significant increase in hemoglobin levels was observed in both groups (p < 0.001). However, the intervention group exhibited a greater mean increase in hemoglobin (1.8 g/dL) compared to the control group (1.2 g/dL) at week eight. There were no significant differences in adverse events between the groups. Conclusion: Red spinach juice demonstrates potential as an effective adjunct or alternative to standard iron supplementation in improving hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with mild anemia. Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and investigate long-term effects.

Abstract

Back pain in pregnancy is common, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy. In the world of health, alternative methods are being created to reduce pain in mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. Endorphin massage is the best nonpharmacological therapy to deal with these problems. This study aimed to determine the effect of acupressure and endorphin massage techniques on the intensity of back pain in third-trimester pregnant women. This type of research is a pre-experiment with one group pre-test post-test design. Samples were taken from a population that met the inclusion criteria of 20 pregnant women. The sampling technique used an accidental sampling technique. The research instrument used the SOP of acupressure and endorphin massage techniques and the Numeric Rating Scale pain observation sheet. The results showed that before acupressure and endorphin massage, almost half (45%) of all pregnant women experienced severe pain. After acupressure and endorphine massage, none of the respondents (0%) experienced severe pain. The results of the Dependent T-test with α = 0.05 obtained Asymp.Sig.=0.001, so the p-value <0.05 indicates the effect of acupressure and endorphin massage techniques on the intensity of back pain in pregnant women. The conclusion is that there is an effect of acupressure techniques and endorphin massage on the intensity of back pain in third-trimester pregnant women. It is recommended that health workers improve their competence in the service of acupressure techniques and endorphine massage.

Abstract

Antenatal care aims to see how the fetus grows and develops and aims to improve the welfare of the mother and fetus. WHO's efforts to reduce the number of high-risk pregnancies include routine examinations for all pregnant women, as well as follow-up examinations for mothers with moderate comorbidities and complications, obstetric and neonatal examinations for women with severe comorbidities and complications. Yeoh et al, (2016) stated that as many as 26% of women with high-risk pregnancies never had an Antenatal Care examination or visit. while 80% of pregnant women experience no complications, and carry out regular Antenatal Care visits according to the recommended re-visit schedule. Pregnant women who do not regularly carry out prenatal checks will have a risk of experiencing pregnancy complications such as chorioamnionitis, placental abruption and a 10x greater risk of giving birth to a baby with a low birth weight, a 12x greater risk of fetal death and a 10x greater risk of maternal death

Abstract

Maternal anxiety during the childbirth process is a common psychological condition that can potentially increase the risk of complications, prolong labor, and reduce the likelihood of a positive birthing experience. High anxiety levels in mothers may interfere with the effectiveness of labor, impact maternal and fetal well-being, and lead to increased medical interventions. One of the most important support systems during labor is the presence and active involvement of the husband. The husband’s role is not only limited to being present but also includes providing emotional, physical, and motivational support to the mother. Recognizing the importance of this role, this community service program was designed to enhance husbands’ understanding and skills in supporting their wives during childbirth, thereby helping to reduce maternal anxiety. The program consisted of several stages, including the delivery of structured health education sessions on maternal needs during labor, demonstrations of effective communication techniques, simulations of support during different stages of childbirth, and interactive discussions to address questions and share experiences. Through these activities, participants were encouraged to build empathy, strengthen their knowledge about labor, and develop the confidence to assist their wives effectively. The results of the program indicated a noticeable improvement in the husbands’ awareness of the importance of their role, as well as increased confidence in providing both emotional reassurance and physical assistance. Participants reported feeling better prepared to accompany their wives, manage unexpected situations, and foster a more supportive environment during childbirth. This initiative highlights the significant impact that targeted education and training for husbands can have on maternal psychological well-being, ultimately contributing to safer and more positive birth experiences.

Abstract

Abstract: Childbirth is an event that can trigger anxiety.. Several efforts can be made to reduce anxiety during childbirth, namely by caring for the mother and baby with the principle of including the husband and family during the birth process. The aim of this research is to see the influence of the husband's assistance on the mother's level of anxiety facing childbirth. This research method uses Pre Experimental with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design design. The population in this study was mothers in the 1st stage of labor totaling 30 mothers divided into 2, namely 1 control group and 1 intervention group. The sampling technique is total sampling. Data was collected using a questionnaire. The intervention was carried out with the husband's assistance. Data analysis was carried out univariate and bivariate using the Pired sample T-test.The results of the research showed that the frequency distribution of anxiety among mothers who were accompanied by their husbands was mostly in the not anxious category, 11 (73.3%) and the anxiety of mothers in the unaccompanied group was mostly in the mild anxiety category, namely 7 people (47.7%). Based on the results of statistical tests, there is an influence of husband's assistance on maternal anxiety, namely p value = 0.000 (< 0.05).The conclusion of this research shows that there is an influence of husband's assistance on maternal anxiety. It is recommended that health workers carry out an alert care program for mothers and husbands. Keywords: Husband's Accompaniment, Mother's Anxiety Level in Birth.
