Abstract

Styrofoam is the number 6 plastic in the plastic classification, namely polystyren and styrofoam is categorized as the 5th largest producer of hazardous waste in the world. One method of processing styrofoam waste is biodegradation using mealworm (Tenebrio molitor larvae) because it is able to degrade styrofoam and does not have a negative impact on survival. The research aims to analyze the relationship of pellet from the biodegradation of styrofoam by mealworm to LD50 values with variations in the composition of pellet making. This research was carried out by the experimental method. The results of the biodegradation of styrofoam produce waste are fecula (mealworm feces) and biomass (dead mealworms). Variations in the composition ratio of ingredients in the pellets of each basin are different. Treatment of A = pellets P1 (25% biomass and 75% fecula), B = P2 pellets (50% biomass and 50% fecula), C = P2 pellets (75% biomass and 25% fecula), and D = pellets commercial buoyancy as a control. The results of the LD50 toxicity test on parrot fish, pellet from the biodegradation of styrofoam by mealworm is not toxic. Keywords: styrofoam waste, biodegradation, mealworm, pellet, LD50 toxicity test.

Abstract

Spent bleaching earth (SBE) is solid waste that is produced from the bleaching industry of palm oil (CPO). In principle, SBE can be regenerated and reused as an adsorbent, but its adsorption capability is limited. This weakness can be overcome through an activation process using one type of mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid (HCl). HCl as a chemical activator can reduce the moisture content in the resulting adsorbent and can dissolve impurities so that more adsorbent pores are formed. This study aims to determine the effect of the effect on HCl concentration and contact time of iodine activation number and SBE surface area. Keywords: Adsorbent, Activation, HCl, Spent Bleaching Earth.

Abstract

The empty fruit bunch (EFB) is a solid waste produced in large quantities byindustrial processing of palm oil through 23% of fresh fruit bunches (FFB). EFB is a waste of lignocellulose containing lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose. The high lignin content in the EFB affects the length of decomposition period. It can be accelerated by adding of white mushrooms, one of paddy straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea). This research aims to examine the effects of paddy straw mushroom in degrading lignin, C/N, and the effect of adding POME with residual EFB of the mushroom media to the C/N ratio, content of N, P, and K. The method used within two variations of planting mushrooms is precisely by mixingand spreading. The best planting is by implementing the mixed variation with the degradation results of lignin toward EFB of 10.582% and the value of C/N ratio of 38.8. The composting process used in-vessel system and the effect of variation in adding 1 kg of POME, 1.5 kg of POME, and 2 kg of POME to EFB. The greatest value of C/N ratio in adding 2 kg of POME equal to 15.13%. Nitrogen content (N) of 2.64 %, Phosphorus (P) equal to 1.10 %, and Potassium (K) equal to 1.10 % is in accordance with the standard of compost quality of Indonesian Standard National 19-7030-2004.Keywords : Empty fruit bunches, paddy straw mushroom, lignin degradation, POME, invessel system , composting
