Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates lecturers’ understanding of the concept and approaches to integrating general and religious sciences within the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education program. The integration of science and religion is a critical aspect of the curriculum, as the program aims to prepare future educators capable of teaching scientific concepts imbued with religious values in a holistic manner, thereby eliminating the dichotomy between science and religion. This research employs a descriptive case study design with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews, and analyzed using content analysis and descriptive analysis techniques. The findings reveal that lecturers' understanding of the integration of general and religious sciences can be categorized into two perspectives: (1) pragmatic understanding and (2) normative understanding. Furthermore, three distinct pedagogical approaches are employed to integrate these domains: (1) the equality approach, (2) the parallelization approach, and (3) the complementary approach. These findings provide valuable insights and serve as a foundation for policy development in Islamic higher education institutions, emphasizing their unique identity and contribution to education.

Abstract

Abstract

Environmental crises characterized by climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste have highlighted the urgent need for educational transformation to foster sustainable generations. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is considered a relevant approach for integration into primary science education because it connects scientific knowledge with environmental awareness and action. This study aimed to analyze the forms of implementation, impacts, and challenges of ESD integration in primary science learning. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Data were obtained from the Scopus database between 2016 and 2026 using keywords related to ESD, science education, and elementary school. Through the screening process, 11 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. The findings revealed that ESD was implemented through the integration of sustainability concepts into science lessons, outdoor learning, project-based learning, interdisciplinary approaches, sustainability-themed science stories, and the development of learning modules and digital platforms. The implementation of ESD positively influenced cognitive, affective, behavioral, and skills domains, including sustainability understanding, environmental awareness, pro-environmental behavior, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and reflective thinking. However, several challenges remain, including limited integration of sustainability content in curricula and teaching materials, gaps between students’ environmental attitudes and factual knowledge, and the need to strengthen teachers’ competencies. This study contributes a thematic synthesis demonstrating that ESD-based science learning in primary schools is most effective when implemented through contextual, participatory, and experiential learning approaches that promote students’ sustainability competencies. Keywords: Education for Sustainable Development, science learning, primary school, sustainability, environmental literacy

Abstract

IPAS instruction in the Merdeka Curriculum emphasizes the scientific process through hands on learning experiences, one of which is through laboratory activities. Observations at MIS Gapuro indicate that students in Class 5-A have studied the theory of light but have never conducted a laboratory experiment. This study aims to describe the implementation of the light laboratory experiment in IPAS instruction, students’ understanding of the concept of light after the experiment, as well as the factors supporting and hindering its implementation. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a sample of 28 fifth-grade students from Class V-A at MIS Gapuro. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and Student Worksheets (LKPD), then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The results showed that the laboratory experiment was conducted through material presentation, group division, conducting experiments using simple tools and materials, and completing the Student Worksheets. Laboratory experiments help students understand the properties of light—namely, that light travels in a straight line, is reflected, and is refracted—based on direct observations. Supporting factors include student enthusiasm, the use of simple tools and materials, and worksheets, while inhibiting factors include time constraints, technical issues with learning media, and group dynamics. This study shows that simple laboratory experiments can support more meaningful science learning through direct scientific experiences. Keywords - Conceptual Understanding, Elementary School, IPAS Learning, Light Lab, Merdeka Curriculum
