Abstract

This research discusses about the social economic history of Yogyakarta during 1950s. The main problem is to analyze how the newly independent country of Indonesia dealt with unemployment after the revolutionary period. This research employs the historical method using primary and secondary sources, such as archives, newspapers, magazines, interviews, and reviews of relevant references. There are four conclusions in this research. First, although the period was called as the period of creating jobs, the unemployment number in early 1950s was increasing. Second, this unemployment problem was not primarily caused by the economic condition but also by demographic problems and the legacies from the Revolution Era. Third, people who were categorized as unemployed were not only labors, but also veterans. Fourth, for the government, solving this unemployment problem was the effort to create economic improvement for its society.

Abstract

The history of historical writing in Indonesia is interesting to observe. This is because the history of writing Indonesian history continues to experience development. One of the developments in Indonesian historiography is how Indonesia-centric historiography is not only dominated by narratives of political history. The dominance of political history narratives in Indonesian historiography also influences the study of Indonesian national history. In fact, the past life of the Indonesian people was not only dominated by political life. At present, Indonesian historiography tries to provide space for historical studies that are not only dominated by political history, one of which is by presenting the history of everyday life. This is a first step for historians to present a more complete and thorough narrative of the past. However, writing the history of everyday life raises other challenges, one of which is that the use of conventional historical sources usually does not present narratives of everyday life. For that, it is necessary to use unconventional historical sources.

Abstract

This study investigates the historical development and inheritance processes of Padepokan Asmoro Bangun, a cultural institution dedicated to preserving Topeng Malangan art, through an oral history approach. Data was gathered through interviews with the fifth-generation successor and the last surviving wife of the founder. The findings reveal that the padepokan has sustained its legacy across several generations since its establishment in the early 1900s. Particularly notable is the third generation, whose leadership elevated the art of Topeng Malangan dance to national prominence, cementing its cultural significance. The inheritance process within the padepokan not only entails the transmission of artistic knowledge and cultural values but is also deeply rooted in the Javanese philosophy of trahing kusumo rembesing madu—a concept emphasizing the continuation of noble lineage through the harmonious dissemination of virtue and excellence. This philosophy underscores the interplay between familial heritage and the preservation of cultural traditions, reflecting broader Javanese values in the stewardship of intangible cultural heritage.

Abstract

The transformation of higher education in the digital era encourages the implementation of innovative technology-based learning models across countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia. This study aims to identify innovative learning models applied at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University, Malang, Indonesia, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and to analyse their contributions to improving student spirituality. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach through case studies, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data are analysed thematically through the processes of data reduction, presentation, and verification. The results of the study show that both institutions develop technology-based learning that not only supports academic achievement but also strengthens students’ affective aspects, especially spirituality. Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University Malang implements explicit integration of Islamic values into every digital learning component. At the same time, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia develops a contextual approach through value reflection and spiritually based projects. Lecturers at both institutions play a key role in guiding the use of technology for contemplation and character-building. These findings confirm that with the right pedagogical approach, technology can be an effective medium in strengthening students’ spiritual values in higher education.
