Abstract

The use of social media among students of madrasah has become increasingly prevalent and plays a significant role in shaping their religious identity. This study aims to explore how madrasah students use social media to build and present their Islamic self-image, as well as how social recognition from peers influences this process. The method used is library research with a qualitative approach, analyzing relevant literature on social media, adolescent identity, and Islam. The main findings indicate that social media serves as a platform for madrasah students to express their religious identity through various forms of content such as religious preaching, calls to worship, and sharing religious knowledge. Social recognition from peers plays a key role in strengthening their Islamic self-image, although there is pressure to present an idealized and performative image. In conclusion, social media has transformed into an important space for the formation of religious identity among madrasah students, but it also brings psychological and social impacts that need to be considered

Abstract

This study explores the role of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as drivers of community economic empowerment in Kademangan District, Probolinggo City, by examining their educational, institutional, and collaborative functions. The scope of the study covers how pesantren foster economic independence through entrepreneurship education and training, the development of Sharia-based cooperatives and business units, and partnerships with local government and business actors. The aim is to analyze the contribution of pesantren to improving community welfare and to identify enabling and constraining factors that influence the optimization of their economic role. This research employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach using library research, based on a critical review of relevant journals, books, and empirical reports. The findings indicate that pesantren possess strong social, spiritual, and community capital that can be transformed into Islamic value-based economic power, provided it is managed professionally, transparently, and collaboratively. The study concludes that pesantren have the potential to become strategic socio-economic transformation agents at the local level, as long as they are supported by inclusive public policies, strengthened managerial capacity, and sustainable synergy with key stakeholders.

Abstract

This article explores the strategic role of religious extracurricular activities in shaping a character-driven young generation amid the challenges of the digital era. Departing from the premise that schools can no longer function merely as spaces for knowledge transfer, this study examines how religious activities such as Islamic spirituality clubs, regular study circles, Qur’an memorization programs, and faith-based social service strengthen not only students’ religious understanding but also their social identity and patterns of interaction, including on social media. This research employs a qualitative library research method through a critical review of relevant journals, books, research reports, and scholarly articles. The findings indicate that religious extracurricular activities contribute to: (1) the expression of personal piety through religious content shared on social media; (2) the representation of students’ involvement in religious programs that builds a collective image and a religious school culture; and (3) the negotiation of Islamic identity and digital ethics when facing contemporary online interaction trends. These three practices demonstrate that students’ religious character is manifested not only in offline spaces but also in their digital footprints. The article underscores the importance of strengthening religious extracurricular programs that are integrated with digital literacy and media ethics, so that social media can be utilized as a space for da’wah, character building, and the formation of a young generation that is religious, critically aware, and socially responsible.

Abstract

This article examines the shifting religious reference among young people from classroom-based religious teachers to social media preachers who offer flexible, accessible, and emotionally engaging content. Using a library research method, the study analyzes literature on the authority of classroom teachers, the influence patterns of digital preachers, and the evolving religious preferences of students. The findings reveal that although religious teachers hold formal legitimacy within educational institutions, their impact is often limited by theoretical teaching approaches, minimal personal interaction, and a lack of connection to students’ everyday realities. In contrast, social media preachers establish authority through emotional closeness, relatable language, brief messages, and content that aligns with adolescents’ lived experiences. This shift provides positive outcomes by broadening access to religious knowledge and offering emotional support, yet it also poses risks such as shallow understanding, misinformation, and the weakening of teachers’ guiding roles. The article proposes strategies for teachers to remain relevant, including digital integration, context-based pedagogy, strengthening students’ digital literacy, and fostering open dialogue. Overall, the study highlights the need for harmonizing classroom learning with digital platforms to ensure both spaces effectively contribute to shaping young people’s religious understanding.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Islamic Education (PAI) curriculum in shaping students’ Islamic identity, self-perception, and perspectives toward “otherness” within Indonesia’s multicultural society. Ideally, the PAI curriculum is designed to internalize universal Islamic values such as justice, compassion, and toleranceyet in practice it still shows a significant gap between its conceptual goals and classroom implementation. PAI learning in many schools tends to be doctrinal, mono-narrative, and lacking in dialogic space, which may contribute to the development of exclusive attitudes among students. Using a library research method with content analysis of journals, books, and official documents, this study finds that the PAI curriculum holds great potential for strengthening students’ religious and moral identity but remains limited in cultivating inclusive attitudes toward diversity. The findings also highlight the need for curriculum reformulation that is more contextual, dialogical, and multicultural through learning strategies that emphasize universal human values, empathy, and social awareness. A socially and globally responsive PAI curriculum is considered essential for shaping a generation of moderate, humanistic Muslims who are capable of living harmoniously in a plural society.

Abstract

Addressing the modern spiritual crisis of 'unhomeliness'—rooted in Heidegger's 'forgetting of Being' (Seinsvergessenheit) and inadequately met by conventional responses—this article constructs an 'existential-Islamic dialogue'. Drawing from Heideggerian thought and Ali Syari'ati's reinterpreted spirituality, this framework synthesizes meditative practices (Denken, Gelassenheit) with the cultivation of an authentic, justice-oriented community (ummah). The central finding is that this synthesis offers a viable path to integrate profound individual transformation with concrete social and political engagement. The article concludes by addressing key challenges, such as essentialism and utopianism, while using the Indonesian context as a key point of reference.
