Abstract

Women's participation in the media industry is still limited with policy standards varying from media to media, often creating stereotypes to the detriment of women. Indonesia's media industry tends to maintain a traditional view that places women's role in mass media at a lower level and less prioritized. Despite being faced with challenges, obstacles, and double burdens, women journalists remain persistent in maintaining the existence of their profession. This study aims to explore the identity of women journalists in Surabaya City and their perspectives on the meaning of the journalist profession, especially in the media industry of Surabaya City. With qualitative methods and data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, this study applies phenomenological approaches and George Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interaction Theory. The results of the study highlight various motives that cause women in interpreting the journalist profession, including being inspired by idols, passion and basic abilities, love of adventure, professional flexibility, personal existence, and as a form of self-proof.

Abstract

The anecdote that netizens are always right is often used to describe internet users who can comment anything on posts from other people’s accounts. This is sad because it means there are no restrictions on what netizens can and cannot comment on. This phenomenon raises pros and cons, resulting in resistance in netizens who disagree with the concept. This study aims to reveal how audiences respond to #Netizenselalubenar and the resistance that arises on social X. This research uses Computer- Mediated Communication theory and Social network theory. This research provides an overview of the important role of hashtags in exchanging information and forming public opinion. It shows how resistance arises as a response to opinion domination on social media. This research is expected to be a reference for further network analysis research. Moreover, it illustrates the power of netizens’ digital activities in influencing public opinion. The research method used is communication network analysis, which is included in quantitative research with a descriptive approach. Data was taken from tweets on social media X that had activity on #Netizenselalubenar. The main findings include a centralized communication network with several dominant accounts, especially the @0 account. Hashtags disseminate information and shape public opinion regarding the ‘netizens are always right’ phenomenon. Resistance from the audience emerged in response to the dominance of opinion on the hashtag and formed an online community to counter the dominance of the hashtag.

Abstract

This study examines the organizational communication network within the Surabaya Education Foundation of August 17, 1945 (YPTA Surabaya), particularly focusing on its protocol unit, which manages ceremonial activities and institutional relations. Given the complexity of the structure and the intensity of official activities, a structured and efficient communication network is essential. Using a sociometrics-based communication audit approach, the research maps the communication network of the protocol and assesses its effectiveness. The research method involves a descriptive qualitative case study, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Sociometric analysis is employed to visualize relationships through sociograms, identifying key communication nodes, dominant actors, and those less involved in the flow of information. The findings reveal a centralized communication network, heavily reliant on a few key individuals as the main conduits for information. Informal communication patterns dominate coordination, leading to potential message distortion and coordination issues. The study concludes that the protocol’s effectiveness is significantly impacted by the uneven communication structure and recommends strengthening the network with formal communication mechanisms, clearer SOPs, and enhanced coordination within the protocol unit. This research contributes to the development of communication audit studies in educational organizations and offers insights into sociometrics-based network mapping.

Abstract

This article critically examines the implementation of Government Regulation (PP) No. 13 of 2005 concerning Public Broadcasting Institutions (LPP) of the Republic of Indonesia Television (TVRI) in the last two decades. This study assesses the effectiveness, challenges, and institutional transformation of LPP TVRI in facing an increasingly complex digital media landscape. Through a policy evaluation and analysis of institutional documents, this study reveals a gap between normative mandates and implementation practices in the field. The findings show that the reform of LPP TVRI has not been fully adaptive to the demands of digitalization and public participation. In addition, the emergence of Government Regulation No. 4 of 2024 strengthens the urgency of updating the paradigm of public media governance in Indonesia. TVRI's reform as a public communication medium in the digital era requires more open, innovative, and accountable governance.

Abstract

Reporting about athletes disables anything new in the world of journalism. In several regional, national, and international sports pages, journalists always write news about the other side of life and his struggles in overcoming disability in the match. It is interesting to see how athletes with disabilities are used as commodities and exploited their interests. So, with this view, the researcher analyzed a text entitled Exploitation of Sadness for Athletes with Disabilities (Theo Van Leeuwen's Critical Discourse Analysis on Detik.Com Edition January 16, 2022). The research uses Frankfurt’s critical theory, with qualitative methods, with a critical analysis approach from Theo Van Leeuwen. The results showed that the writer used several inclusion and exclusion strategies in the news text. The inclusion strategy focuses on Halil exploitation as the main star in the text above. Halil is described as a young man who has limitations and physical imperfections but wins in sports competitions. Meanwhile, in the exclusion strategy, the scriptwriter does not present a coach who has contributed to Halil's victory or a friend from a hawker association who is also an athlete who paved the way for Halil to become an athlete. With this inclusion and exclusion strategy, it can be seen how the perspective of news writers for persons with disabilities places them in an unequal position with humans in general

Abstract

In the advertising industry, the media plays an important role in shaping public perceptions of beauty standards, including in Indonesia. Representations of women in advertisements are often depicted with ideal images centered on fair skin. Although advertisements now often feature representations of diversity, these standards are still made subtly in the media. This study discusses the contradictory messages contained in the Citra advertisement version “Pancarkan Ragam Cantik Kulit Indonesia” using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic method. This research is a qualitative study using a constructivism paradigm approach with text analysis. The purpose of this study is to uncover the hidden meanings in advertisements using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic method with Jacques Derrida's deconstruction theory. The results of the study show contradictory messages in the representation of diversity raised in this advertisement. Although Citra highlights the diversity of Indonesian skin color beauty, the presence of visuals such as placing light-skinned women as the main focus, the use of skin lightening ingredients such as bengkuang and niacinamide in Citra products as the main selling point, animations of skin color changes towards lighter, the appearance of characters who have dark skin characters with the label "Glowing Skin" still refers to the standard of beauty of light skin. This advertisement has not completely deconstructed the standard of beauty, but rather reproduces it in a new and more subtle form in selling its products.
