Abstract

The current scenario in the public sphere sees women's presence, yet certain professions, including journalism, remain primarily dominated by men. This gender disparity not only affects media policies but also perpetuates stereotypes hindering women's advancement in the industry, thus becoming a subject of interest for the researchers focusing on Surabaya's media landscape. This study aims to analyse the portrait of women in the media by focusing on female journalists in Surabaya, Indonesia. This research used critical ethnography and standpoint theory as a foundation for analysing the phenomenon. Based on the results of the researcher's search, the number of female journalists in Surabaya is at most 30% compared to male journalists. This research uses critical ethnography and standpoint theory, which are used as a foundation to analyse the phenomenon. Based on the results of the researcher's search, the number of female journalists in Surabaya is at most 30% compared to male journalists. The results of this study show clearly that society's norms and stereotypes about gender that do not prioritise female journalists are the cause of discrimination. In fact, this discrimination often occurs unintentionally due to factors in the organisational structure and environment that do not support the inclusion of women. This leads to poor representation of women in the media until there is an endless cycle of the system.

Abstract

Toxic masculinity is a form of gender injustice reflected through labeling and stereotypes toward men, especially when they attempt to express emotional vulnerability. This study explores how toxic masculinity is manifested in the sadfishing phenomenon on TikTok, particularly through the hashtag #LakiLakiTidakBercerita and user comments on the account @bimbluess. The phenomenon highlights a paradox in which men’s emotional openness is often met with responses that reinforce hegemonic masculinity norms. Using a qualitative approach through netnographic methods, this research analyzes digital user interactions as part of participatory media culture. The study is framed by standpoint theory and the concept of hegemonic masculinity to understand how gendered power structures operate in digital spaces. The findings reveal five key themes: (1) toxic masculinity as a generational emotional wound, (2) internalized masculine values as social consciousness, (3) fear of vulnerability and masculine performativity, (4) emotional self-sabotage, and (5) the burden of productivity seen as male destiny. These dynamics show how digital platforms can both challenge and reproduce gender norms.

Abstract

Impulsive buying behavior is increasingly becoming a trend after the existence of marketplaces that make it easier for consumers to buy an item. Currently, active e-commerce users in Indonesia continue to grow with increasingly massive digital activities. Fashion is an item that is more purchased by women in online shopping. The persuasion of advertisements featuring products that claim to perfect women's appearance is a hot-selling commodity. The depiction of the entanglement of consumerism is shown in the Pay Later series. This series tells the story of Tika, the main character, who becomes the object of consumerism. By using the critical discourse analysis method of Sara Mills, which focuses on feminism and in line with this research, which is based on the theory of postmodern feminism, the results show the subject-object position that this series provides an overview of women as objects of consumerism where looking beautiful with beautiful goods is a requirement for women to look more attractive. The use of pay later, which provides flexibility in terms of payment, is attractive to the main character without being accompanied by adequate financial literacy skills. This is what makes the main character get entangled in paying later debt. The high interest rate and relatively short deadline are the problems that are then faced. For the sake of appearing charming, the main character is haunted by debt collectors in his daily life.

Abstract

Intense competition among private higher education institutions (PHEIs) requires them to implement effective promotional campaigns to attract prospective students. This study examines the reception of second-semester students at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (UNTAG) Surabaya regarding the aspirational promise in the "Achieve Your Dreams with Us" promotional campaign. Employing a qualitative approach with reception analysis and Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding framework, data were collected through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The findings indicate that the most dominant reception position is the negotiated position. Students critically separated the slogan, which they perceived as "marketing language," and focused more on tangible evidence such as accreditation and tuition fees. They also reconstructed the meaning of "dreams" to align with their pragmatic goals (career, hobbies, self-development), while asserting that ultimate success depends on individual agency, with the university serving as a facilitator. A dominant position was found to emerge post-hoc following validation through positive real-world experiences on campus, whereas an oppositional position was absent. This study concludes that the reception of marketing messages by a young audience is not a passive process, but rather a complex act of pragmatic validation. In this process, the credibility of each message element (verbal, visual, symbolic) is actively negotiated based on the audience's frames of reference and experiences, in which concrete proof is valued over aspirational promises.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology demands that media companies transform quickly; it is insufficient for media to produce content; they must adopt an integrated multi-platform strategy. This study examines media transformation management strategies in the multi-platform era, utilizing the Tribun Network as a case study. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. This study utilizes Henry Jenkins' theory of media convergence and a cross-media approach to analyze channel integration and content distribution patterns. The results indicate that Tribun's transformation encompasses digital editorial integration, leadership restructuring towards a flexible model, platform-based content optimization, and diversification of monetization channels. This strategy has not only expanded audience reach but has also established an editorial workflow that is responsive to algorithms and technological dynamics. This research contributes to the literature on digital media management and is a practical reference for other media organizations in designing multi-platform strategies.

Abstract

Media undeniably has a great influence in the political sphere today. The interdependence between media and politics is an interesting discussion because it should be an institution that disseminates information neutrally, no tendency to certain groups. However, today’s media in Indonesia exacerbates the phenomenon of political mediatization. This study aims to provide new insights into how Tribunnews.com uses framing to shape political narratives in the context of news coverage of Kaesang Pangarep’s rise to the leadership of PSI party. This study combines qualitative methodology with the framing analysis method based on the theories of Gerald Kosicki and Zhongdang Pan. It examined the Tribunnews.com report, edition September 30th 2023 titled “Observer Suspects Megawati’s Anger over Kaesang Joining PSI”. Tribunnews.com was chosen because the news was only reviewed from the observer’s side. Hence, this research attempted to reveal how Kaesanng’s rise to the leadership of the PSI party was framed by Tribunnews.com.  The results of the research based on the Zhongdang Pan and Kosicki model demonstrated that Tribunnews.com constructed Megawati’s alleged anger, yet the news was not followed with reliable sources for balanced reporting. Tribunnews.com also mediatized the use of bombastic titles and content to increase news appeal. This requires a public concern because the media, which should act as the fourth pillar of democracy, instead tend to mediatize the news only for attaining public attention.

Abstract

BPJS Health has successfully covered millions of participants across Indonesia, bringing the hope of affordable and quality health care for the people. However, this success is not apart from the serious debate on issues of justice in the BPJS allowance system, which is the main highlight and the main challenge facing BPJS health. Justice in the BPJS has become an increasingly relevant issue amidst the high economic and social diversity in Indonesia. The country covers a wide range of communities, ranging from high-income urban residents to rural residents who may only generate minimal incomes. There are significant differences in economic capacity between the inhabitants of big cities and small cities, as well as between different provinces.
