Abstract

This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of the implementation of Problem-based Learning with brainwriting method based on food diversification problem toward students’ critical thinking and communication skills. This was a quasi-experimental research using a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design, which involved two classes of 10th-grade student that selected by cluster random sampling, in a public high school at Bantul regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. One class was managed as the experimental group, and another one was as the control group. The data of critical thinking skill were collected using an essay test instrument which analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, while communication skill data were collected through an observation protocol and analyzed descriptively. The findings of this research revealed that the Problem-based Learning instruction with brainwriting method was significantly more effective in developing students’ critical thinking and communication skills, as Mann-Whitney U test supported this result (p=0.00) as well as the descriptive analysis of the average scores of the skills. With this significance, Problem-based learning with the brainwriting method can be used as an example of a model and enrich the learning model implemented by teachers. These results are further discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Study on e-learning implementation has been growing as a great interest particularly in biology education research and practice. Whilst a number of research has shown various modes of e-learning, however, there is still a lack of understanding on how e-learning can be applied for health literacy orientation in biology instruction. This research aimed to develop a conceptual framework of SSI-based e-learning in biology to promote student health literacy. This research was conducted in narrative inquiry design. Nine people including five biology teachers, two experts in health education and two science teachers who are practitioners in e-learning implementation were voluntarily participated in this research. Data of this research are experiences, knowledge, or perspectives that were expressed by participants and were collected through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis approach was employed to analyse the data in three stages with trustworthiness and authenticity were applied for quality standard. Research findings show that there are three main aspects that need to be considered in developing an intended framework. These are: 1) e-learning platform could be used, 2) SSI-based learning pathways arranged in e-learning mode, and 3) additional e-learning elements need to be provided. Hence, these three aspects play essential roles in underpinning the framework of SSI-based e-learning in biology to promote student health literacy.

Abstract

Media belajar merupakan instrumen untuk meningkatkan kualitas proses pembelajaran. Media belajar yang banyak digunakan guru biologi antara lain gambar dan foto. Disisi lain saat ini kemajuan teknologi memungkinkan individu memiliki alat fotografi yang dapat digunakan untuk memproduksi foto yang baik. Program pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk  meningkatkan kemampuan dan kompetensi guru dalam memproduksi media pembelajaran berupa foto. Kegiatan berupa pelatihan/workshop fotografi biologi. Kegiatan dibagi menjadi 3 acara yaitu: 1) penyampaian materi konsep dasar fotografi biologi dan teknik-teknik pengambilan foto biologi, 2) penugasan pengambilan/hunting foto objek biologi dilingkungan sekitar, dan 3) pengemasan foto objek biologi dalam media pembelajaran. Kegiatan workshop diikuti oleh 13 guru biologi dari MGMP DIY yang berasal dari Kabupaten/Kota di DIY. Tampak peserta workshop telah memahami konsep dasar fotografi biologi. Peserta telah memiliki sensitivitas terhadap objek dan fenomena biologi dilingkungan sekitar yang dapat digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran.Kata kunci: fotografi biologi, objek biologi, media pembelajaran.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui: 1) pengalaman belajar biologi materi virus yang dialami siswa, 2) argumentasi siswa tentang vaksinasi Covid-19 setelah mendapatkan pengalaman belajar biologi materi virus, dan 3) hubungan pengalaman belajar biologi materi virus dengan kemampuan argumentasi siswa tentang vaksinasi covid-19. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian korelasional ex post facto dengan pendekatan analisis data kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah 60 siswa kelas X MIPA SMA Negeri yang berlokasi di Bantul. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan angket, tes kemampuan argumentasi, dan lembar wawancara proses pembelajaran. Reliabilitas instrumen diuji dengan koefisien reliabilitas Alpha Cronbach yang memperoleh hasil 0,971 untuk pengalaman belajar dan 0,892 untuk instrumen kemampuan argumentasi. Analisis data dilakukan dengan analisis deskriptif dan korelasi spearman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: 1) pengalaman belajar biologi materi virus siswa sebagian besar termasuk dalam kategori sedang sebanyak 33,3% dari total sampel, 2) kemampuan argumentasi siswa tentang vaksinasi covid-19 sebagian besar termasuk dalam kategori rendah sebanyak 36,6% dari total sampel, 3) terdapat hubungan positif yang signifikan antara pengalaman belajar biologi materi virus dengan kemampuan argumentasi siswa tentang vaksinasi covid-19 (r: 0,344, p: 0,007). Hubungan antara tingkat pengalaman belajar dan tingkat kemampuan argumentasi rendah karena pengalaman belajar hanya menyumbangkan 8,8% pada kemampuan argumentasi dan 91,2% sumbangan dari faktor lainnya.

Abstract

This study is research and development using modified design and development research (D&DR) model through three main phases: 1) design; 2) development; and 3) evaluation with the aim of establishing an instructional product for teaching and learning. Augmented reality technology was used to develop a Mobile Augmented Reality of Respiratory System (MARRS) which was proposed for conducting socio-scientific issue-based biology learning on the topic of respiratory system. The MARRS was designed to visualize the context of smoking. More specifically, students were able to observe the structure and function of the respiratory system, simulation of smoking effects on lungs, and lung’s disorder affected by smoking. Research findings show that there are three main aspects to be considered as the framework of the MARRS development: (1) the system design; (2) features; and (3) how to incorporate the MARRS into SSI-based biology learning. Once the MARRS was developed, it went through several round of validations by experts, practitioner, and users to evaluate its properness for teaching and learning. According to the validation criteria, the MARRS was categorized as very good in general. It can be concluded that the MARRS is proper to be implemented in teaching and learning of the respiratory system topic.

Abstract

The use of prohibited food additives such as formalin is still often found, especially in the school environment. In fact, based on the 2012 Minister of Health Regulation No. 033, formalin is prohibited as a food additive. This phenomenon requires people to be quite observant in choosing food tools. In addition, many people think that the formalin content test can only be done through the laboratory, the formalin test can also be done by a simple reagent containing anthocyanin on dragon fruit skin. So, the researchers designed a simple STEAM-based media with a natural formaldehyde-detecting ingredient, namely red dragon fruit peel extract. This design is divided into two parts, namely the design of simple steam-based media and the manufacture of natural dragon fruit peel extract to detect the content of formaldehyde additives in food. The design was carried out by Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 6 Jember. The final tool produced is a detector marker.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of digital learning media with augmented reality, developed to increase students' understanding of concepts and interest in learning. This research is Research and development using the Design and Development Research (D&DR) model, which consists of four stages, namely analysis, planning, production, and evaluation. This research was conducted at SMAN 1 Prambanan, Sleman. The test subjects were class XI MIPA students to get student response data, while the research sample was class X students to get data on the effectiveness of media use. Data collection techniques include questionnaires to obtain product feasibility data, while multiple-choice tests and learning interest questionnaires are used to obtain data on the effectiveness of media use. The results of the media suitability questionnaire were analyzed descriptively. In contrast, the data results for the media effectiveness test were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney Test and Independent Sample T-test. The research results showed that the development of augmented reality media on Animalia material was declared feasible with scores of 95.3% (media expert), 96.5% (material expert), 93.2% (Biology teacher), and 81.2% (student response). Learning Animalia material using AR media is less effective than learning without AR media in increasing students' understanding of concepts and interest in learning. However, there is a tendency to increase student understanding of concepts and greater interest in learning when learning with AR media.

Abstract

Berpikir reflektif termasuk salah satu kemampuan yang perlu dikembangkan dalam pembelajaran biologi abad ke-21. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh pembelajaran berbasis socio-scientific issue terhadap kemampuan berpikir reflektif peserta didik pada materi sistem ekskresi dalam konteks isu cukai minuman berpemanis. Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen semu dengan nonequivalent control group design. Sampel penelitian ini adalah peserta didik kelas XI salah satu SMA Negeri di wilayah kota Yogyakarta, Provinsi DIY yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol secara cluster random sampling. Instrumen pengumpulan data berupa angket yang dimodifikasi dari Reflective Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ) yang dikembangkan oleh Kember. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan kemampuan berpikir reflektif antara kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol dengan nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) > 0,05. Namun pada kelompok eksperimen memberi pengaruh yang besar pada semua level berpikir reflektif dengan nilai effect size 0,311; 0,456 dan 0,320 kecuali pada level understanding dengan nilai effect size 0,074. Kelompok kontrol berpengaruh kecil pada semua level berpikir reflektif dengan nilai effect size 0,012; 0,086 dan 0,089 kecuali pada critical reflective yang berpengaruh sedang dengan nilai effect size 0,218.  Melalui penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran berbasis SSI berpengaruh lebih baik dibandingkan pembelajaran discovery learning terhadap perubahan atau peningkatan kemampuan berpikir reflektif pada semua level kecuali level understanding.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to find out students' learning experiences on environmental change topic and teachers' views about the potential utilization of food waste issue for the topic. This was a descriptive research that carried out using case study method. The data were collected using questionnaire as well as interviews and analysed descriptively. The results showed that although students have had good learning experience on the topic, however, the issue of food waste has not been discussed, and  this finding is in align with teachers’ view. Despite of the issue had not been applied as the main context for the environmental change topic, nevertheless, the teachers strongly suggested that the food waste issue potentially useful to be implemented for the topic. Considerations of the implementation are further discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Health literacy plays a pivotal role in shaping an individual's adoption of a healthy lifestyle, particularly among students transitioning into adolescence and adulthood. Hence, integrating health literacy into educational curricula is imperative. For instance, the study of the human kidney excretory system, which necessitates the use of measuring instruments, can serve as a platform to enhance students' health literacy skills within the realm of biology education. This study was conducted to develop and determine the feasibility of human kidney health literacy instruments. The research method used in this study is ADDIE development research which consists of 5 stages, including (1) preliminary needs analysis (2) product design (3) Development (4) Implementation, and (5) evaluation. The trial results stated that the instrument was feasible to use with a linguist assessment of 9.8% very feasible category, and a material expert of 91% very feasible category. The empirical validity test was conducted with a limited trial to 47 students of Al-Azhar 9 Yogyakarta High School and the results showed that 92% of the items were declared valid with a high reliability value of 0.7. This study produced 16 statement items on the attitude aspect, 6 items on the knowledge aspect, and items on the skill aspect. The total question items produced in this study were 24 question items that were valid and feasible to use as a tool to improve the quality of education.
