Abstract

Introduction: Fractures are common injuries that often result in postoperative pain and nausea. Managing these symptoms effectively is important for patient recovery, and aromatherapy has emerged as a non-pharmacological option. Case Description: This study involved two adult patients who experienced pain and nausea following orthopedic fracture surgery. Each morning, the patients inhaled either lemon or lavender aromatherapy. The effects were assessed 15 minutes after administration over a period of four days using assessment and observation sheets. Discussion: The results showed that both patients experienced a reduction in pain and nausea levels. The first patient’s pain decreased from 6 to 2, and nausea from 5 to 0, while the second patient’s pain decreased from 5 to 1, and nausea from 3 to 0. These findings suggest that lemon and lavender aromatherapy may be effective in alleviating postoperative pain and nausea. Conclusion: The use of lemon and lavender aromatherapy appeared to reduce pain and nausea in these cases, indicating potential benefits as supportive nursing interventions. Further research with larger samples is needed to confirm these preliminary observations.

Abstract

Aims: To investigate the effectiveness of herbal extracts in reducing Fasting Blood Glucose (FBS) and HbA1c levels in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and identify gaps in evidence-based practice for the use of herbal therapies in T2DM management. Methods: A literature search was conducted across three major databases: ProQuest, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using specific keywords combined with Boolean logic (“AND” and “OR”) to enhance search precision. The quality of the studies was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal tool and ROB 2.0, which evaluate the risk of bias across five domains. Eight studies that met the inclusion criteria were systematically analyzed. Results: The analysis revealed three main themes: (1) a decrease in FBS, (2) a decrease in both FBS and HbA1c, and (3) no significant decrease in either parameter. Certain herbal extracts, such as Bauhinia forficata, barberries, a combination of berries and fenugreek, and Jinlida have been shown to significantly reduce FBS and HbA1c levels. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the potential use of herbal extracts as complementary therapies for T2DM. These results may contribute to the development of evidence-based nursing practices for the use of herbal treatments in T2DM care.

Abstract

Background: Monitoring of infusion fluid therapy is carried out continuously as an effort to prevent embolism and nosocomial phlebitis. Nurses who are less than optimal and have inadequate numbers in controlling and monitoring the infusion system mean that the infusion system for each patient cannot be controlled continuously because the workload is high and many patients have to be monitored.Purpose: This literature review discusses various Internet of Things (IoT)-based infusion monitoring device systems related to accuracy and effectiveness in optimizing nurse work performance. Methods: Several journals search databases were used, such as ProQuest, IEEE Xplore, SAGE Journals, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied using the Boolean Logic and PICOT methods. Inclusion criteria were original articles discussing IoT-based infusion monitoring, English language, and full-text articles. The exclusion criteria applied were articles in the form of reviews. Results: This literature review used 10 international journals published in 2014-2024. To assess the quality of the literature, we use the Checklist from JBI Critical Appraisal Tools. The IoT-based infusion monitoring device system is accurate and reliable for monitoring infusions. Accuracy is presented quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitatively, it shows a range of 88%-100%. Meanwhile, qualitatively stated accuracy means that the device can count infusion drops reliably and accurately. Thus, this IoT-based infusion monitoring system can optimize nurse performance. Conclusion: Accurate and reliable IoT monitoring system devices are able to support the optimization of nurse performance by monitoring and sending signals and information to nurses as users.

Abstract

Aims: The writing of this case report aims to analyze the management of hypothermia in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy in the operating room. Methods: This research method is a case report study with a retrospective approach by monitoring, interviewing, and using medical data of patients undergoing emergency exploratory laparotomy surgery in the Emergency Operating Room of Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Hospital. The data collected were the patient's disease course, diagnosis, actions, and nursing interventions. Results: In both cases, the temperature was maintained between 35.5°C to 36°C using a combination of warm blankets, mattresses, and warmed NaCl. Conclusion: This case report concludes that providing warm blankets, warm mattresses, and warm NaCl to wash the abdomen is beneficial in preventing perioperative hypothermia in patients undergoing emergency exploratory laparotomy. The operating room nurse is expected always to monitor the patient's temperature so as not to experience hypothermia.

Abstract

The lack of access to health services in several regions in Indonesia can have an impact on reducing knowledge and public health levels in the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The community service programme through KOLOK (cholesterol, ear, throat, blood glucose) health services aims to provide health services to the people of Bengkala Village, which has a deaf community. The procedures carried out include checking weight and height to determine body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol levels, as well as ear and throat examinations. The subjects in this health service were Bengkala Village residents who were registered at the service location. Based on the evaluation results, the BMI showed obese (12.2%) and very obese (16.3%), hypertension (31.5%), high cholesterol (55.6%), and high blood glucose levels (54.5%). The number of people with ear and throat disorders was 35.9%, with the most common type of disorder being cerumen obturation. Overall, more than 50% of the community had normal BMI, blood pressure, and ear and throat conditions, but more than 50% of the community had high cholesterol and blood glucose levels. The community needs education to understand healthy lifestyle behaviours that impact nutritional, metabolic, and ear and throat health problems. Access to communication and the village’s distance from health facilities such as hospitals, health centres, and specialist services remain challenges. In addition, the development of a community health cadre programme and the integration of technology to improve effective communication to support the education process and the improvement of public health services are also needed by the village.
