Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that may pose serious complications if poorly managed. The application of mobile technology (m-health) ranging from simple to more complex programs in diabetes management has the potential to foster patients’ active involvement in their care. However, the evidence of m-health effectiveness on the self-management of type-2 diabetes patients in low- and middle-income countries is still mixed.Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a ten-week short message system (SMS)-based intervention (Tweek SMSDM) on self-management of type-2 diabetes patients. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was performed in two groups. The intervention group (n=30) received additional daily automated messages to enhance their diabetic self-care practice, while the control group (n=30) continued to follow the standard program only. Pre- and post-intervention data were measured in both groups using the Indonesian version of the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) questionnaire. T-test, Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks, McNemar and Fisher exact tests were carried out to analyze the data. Results: After ten weeks, the intervention group showed significant mean changes in the domains of general diet (0.42±1.08; p=0.034), specific diet (1.75±1.42; p=0.0001), exercise (1.02±1.85; p=0.005), blood-glucose testing (0.53±1.67; p=0.009), and foot care (4.75±2.51; p=0.001) before and after the intervention, while the control group did not. This study also found significant differences in the mean scores for each domain of the SDSCA between the intervention and the control groups (p<0.05).Conclusion: The Tweek SMSDM program can improve the self-management of type-2 diabetes patients and positively affect each domain in the SDSCA. The findings of this study recommend that nurses integrate the program into patient treatment regimes in primary healthcare centers; therefore, patients and their significant others can play more proactive roles in their diabetic care.

Patients with kidney failure must receive replacement therapy for kidney function; one of them ishemodialysis. Long-term hemodialysis therapy causes changes in aspects of life; one of them ispsychological changes that give rise to response to spiritual expressions in the form of negative orpositive responses. Negative response will have an impact on the quality of life patients. This study aimedto determine whether there was a relationship between spirituality and the life quality of kidney failurepatients that underwent hemodialysis in RSUD Buleleng. This research is a descriptive correlational studywith a cross-sectional design and purposive sampling technique. The amount of sample in this study was92 patients who underwent hemodialysis in RSUD Buleleng. The Spearman Rank test results onspirituality and quality of life variables obtained p-value 0.001 (p <0.05), which means there was amoderate positive relationship between spirituality and quality of life kidney failure patients thatunderwent hemodialysis in RSUD Buleleng. So it can be concluded that if spirituality is high, the qualityof life will be okay. Suggested for hemodialysis nurses can implement holistic treatments expecially toimprove aspects of spirituality so that they can maintain the life quality of patients that undergoeshemodialysis.

Quality of life is an important indicator which shows patient satisfaction in living with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and becomes ultimate goal of patient care. Illness perception is the main concept of common sense model that serves as the patient behavior determinant. Illness perception appears as an important element related to patient’s response to the diseases and its management, therefore a good illness perception will lead to an improvement of patient’s quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between illness perception and T2DM patients’ quality of life. This was a descriptive-analytic study with cross-sectional design done at Diabetes Community of West Denpasar II Public Health Center from October to November 2015. Patients with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) aged ? 45 years were selected through purposive sampling. In order to determine the relation between illness perception and quality of life T2DM patients, simple linear regression analysis were performed. The results of this study showed that from 60 subjects most of them aged between 45-54 years old and suffered from T2DM < 5 years. The mean score for disease perception (IPQ-R Brief) was 32.92; while for quality of life (WHOQOL Brief) the mean score was 65.25. Simple linear regression analysis demonstrated that illness perception has significantly relationship with quality of life T2DM patient (r = 0,822; p = 0,000). Illness perception significantly affected quality of life of 67.6% (p=0.000), while the rest were influenced by other variables. The regression equation was Quality of life = 97,782 + 0,988illness perception. In conclusion, there was a relationship between illness perception and T2DM patient’s quality of life. These results can be further developed on the establishment of good illness perception to support quality of life T2DM patient. Keywords: Quality of life, Disease perception, IPQR Brief, WHOQOL Brief
