Abstract

Reading is essential in every subject. Reading also has a relationship with the students' achievement. This study is aimed to investigate whether or not there is (1) a significant correlation between reading attitude and reading comprehension achievement, (2) a significant correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension achievement, (3) a significant correlation between reading attitude and reading motivation, and (4) any correlation between predictor variables and the criterion variable. The study was a correlational study with Pearson-product moment correlation. The sample of this study were 95 eleventh graders of upper secondary school. Cluster random sampling technique is used in this study. Questionnaires of reading attitude, reading motivation, and reading comprehension tests are given. The questionnaire result reveals that the reading attitude was negative, and reading motivation is medium. Furthermore, the results show that reading attitude and reading comprehension has a significant correlation. Reading motivation and reading comprehension also has a significant correlation. The roles of students, parents and teachers must work suitably in order to construct the positive reading atmosphere, thus they could achieve the better achievement in reading even for all subjects. HIGHLIGHTS: The supports from family in motivating the children to be a good reader could build the positive attitude toward reading. Reading motivation can lead to the improvement in language learning performance. The learners who tend to read simple English texts can be said as the learners who were lacking English reading experiences.

Abstract

The constant enhancement of Indonesia's educational curriculum is aimed at improving the overall quality of education. This research specifically investigates the application of the 2013 English Curriculum at a state yunior high school in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia, utilizing a qualitative evaluative approach. The study, conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Palembang, involved two English teachers and eighth-grade students. The findings revealed that the English teachers adhered to standard content and government syllabi when developing lesson plans. Teaching methods and assessments also aligned with government policies. Additionally, factors such as teacher quality, resource accessibility, and community involvement were identified as potential influencers on curriculum effectiveness. Although the curriculum has evolved, evaluating the 2013 curriculum can provide valuable insights for future improvements in Indonesia's educational curriculum.

Abstract

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) provides digital media innovations to gain Literacy and understanding. In South Sumatra, the potential of local wisdom, such as folklore and traditional songs, highlights the importance of these elements in Ethnopedagogy and cultural preservation. The research provides contributions to both educators and learners. By incooperating ethnopedagogy into the learning materials, it can make teaching practice become more inclusive and enhance literacy in a culturally contextualized manner optimally. Therefore this study aims to enhance students’ English literacy by integrating Ethnopedagogy context throuh learning material, which emphasizes cultural relevance and teaching practices that also reflect students' cultural backgrounds. This study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology to explore the enhancement of English literacy through Ethnopedagogy. Data were collected through a literature review. The qualitative approach facilitated an in-depth analysis of how cultural relevance and effective teaching practices can improve English literacy education. This study investigates the integration of cultural contexts into Literacy Instruction. The study then addresses the role of cultural identity in literacy achievement. The research further explores challenges and solutions in culturally relevant literacy instruction. The findings underscore the significance of incorporating local wisdom and cultural elements in developing effective English literacy programs that resonate with students' cultural backgrounds and enhance their learning experiences.

Abstract

The Utilization of Video Makers in Essay Writing at English Education Study Program of Sriwijaya University. Objective: The aim of this study was to discover the fifth-semester students’ views on the use of video makers in essay writing at English Education Study Program of Sriwijaya University. Method: This study applied descriptive qualitative method. There were 39 participants who participated in answering the questionnaires of this study. The data was presented and described based on the percentage obtained from the result of the questionnaires. Finding: The results of this research showed that using video makers in essay writing has a beneficial impact on students’ multimodality writing in the twenty-first century. Conclusion: Along with the advancement of technological tools, students of the 21st-century can create multimodal composition of video essays by utilizing video maker application in project-based multimodal essay writing.Keywords: 21st-century era, project-based learning, essay writing, video makers, multimodal composition.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202356

Abstract

The Correlations among English Teachers’ TPACK, TISE, ITOE, and Teaching Implementation. Objectives: This research is correlational research that aimed to find out the correlations among Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), Technology Integration Self-Efficacy (TISE), Instructional Technology Outcome Expectation (ITOE), and Teaching Implementation. Methods: TPACK-EFL Survey and Motivation of Technology Integration in Education Scale Questionnaires were distributed to 60 students of the English language teacher professional education program at Sriwijaya University in the academic year 2018/2019. Findings: The findings of this research showed that the students have a high understanding level of TPACK, high level of TISE, high level of ITOE, and good in teaching implementation, and there are positive significant correlations among TPACK, TISE, ITOE, and teaching implementation. Conclusion: Not only the technical equipment but also the qualified teachers who understand how to advance the ICT are very needed. Abstract

In differentiated learning, teachers need to develop student worksheets tailored to the profile of the students. One of the challenges in the English language learning process in the target area is the limited availability of worksheets that align with the students' readiness levels. This mentoring activity aims to enhance the skills of 25 English teachers in OKU Selatan District, South Sumatra, in developing differentiated worksheets tailored to students' readiness levels. Conducted online and offline over 40 hours, the activity includes presentations and worksheet design development, with feedback from experts. Results show teachers are enthusiastic and able to produce differentiated worksheet designs. The activity seeks to address the limited availability of worksheets aligned with students' readiness levels, ultimately improving English language learning quality in the target area. Future continuations of this activity are expected to further enhance teaching skills and student outcomes.
