Abstract

This article explores a community service initiative aimed at enhancing literacy among children in Rejatengah Village, Indonesia, as part of the national effort to develop Indonesia’s Golden Generation by 2045. The project was conducted by a team from Al Maksum College of Teacher Training and Education over a one-month period, targeting children aged 6 to 9 years. The initiative involved comprehensive educational activities, including literacy assessments, interactive workshops, and parental involvement, to foster a supportive learning environment. Significant improvements in literacy skills were observed, attributed to the innovative teaching methods and community engagement strategies employed. The establishment of a permanent educational resource center has ensured the sustainability of educational efforts, serving as a model for similar interventions in other rural areas. This project not only highlights the critical role of community-based educational programs in enhancing literacy but also demonstrates the potential of such initiatives to contribute to broader national development goals.

Abstract

This study aims to identify errors that are often made by 5th semester English language students in completing tree diagram assignments, especially in analyzing sentence structures in the Syntax course. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data analysis techniques in the form of content analysis of 22 students who were divided into 10 groups to work on the task of making tree diagrams from English news texts from various sources. Based on the analysis, several types of main errors were found, namely errors in identifying word categories (168 words), incorrect node labeling (42 node labeling), and incorrect application of phrase structures (11 phrase structures). In addition, students also have difficulty in understanding the hierarchical relationship between syntactic elements, such as the correct placement of determiners and auxiliary verbs. These errors are often caused by a lack of understanding of basic word categories and the underlying syntactic rules. This study reveals that making tree diagrams requires a deep understanding not only of syntactic theory, but also its practical application in everyday sentence analysis. Errors in node labeling and errors in syntactic category identification indicate the need for a more contextual and deeper understanding-based learning approach.

Abstract

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a widely acclaimed novel that explores themes of identity, conformity, and social control. While numerous studies have examined the novel through various literary and critical lenses, there is a notable lack of research analyzing it through the Marxist postulates of power dynamics, and ideological control. This study addresses this gap by applying Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to investigate how the novel portrays power dynamics and ideological control resulting in oppression of characters and the internalization of ideology. This qualitative research examines Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro through the Marxist postulates of power dynamics, and ideological control, utilizing Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as an analytical model.  By applying Van Dijk’s CDA framework, the research reveals how the clones, as a marginalized underclass, internalize their exploitation, reinforcing the hegemonic structures that govern them. The findings of this study contributes to Marxist literary criticism and discourse analysis, offering new insights into the intersection of language, power, and ideology in Ishiguro’s dystopian narrative. Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of storytelling as an instructional strategy for improving students’ reading comprehension. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 32 students divided into a control group (n=14) and an experimental group (n=18). The control group was taught using conventional methods, while the experimental group received a storytelling-based intervention. Pre-test and post-test scores were analyzed to measure the impact of the teaching methods. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s reading comprehension. The mean score for the experimental group increased from 64.89 in the pre-test to 78.22 in the post-test, while the control group’s mean score only increased from 65.21 to 68.57. A paired t-test revealed that the experimental group’s improvement was statistically significant (t=6.72, p<0.01), whereas the control group’s improvement was not (t=1.85, p>0.05). An independent t-test comparing the post-test scores of the two groups confirmed a significant difference (t=4.29, p<0.01), with the experimental group outperforming the control group. The effect size (Cohen’s d=1.12) indicated a large impact of the storytelling intervention. These findings highlighted storytelling’s potential to enhance students’ reading comprehension by fostering engagement and deeper understanding of the material. The study underscores the importance of integrating innovative teaching strategies, such as storytelling, into educational practices to improve learning outcomes. Further research is recommended to explore its application across different subjects and educational levels. Keywords : storytelling, teaching strategy, reading comprehension

Abstract

This research employs critical discourse analysis (CDA) to examine a news article titled "KPU Chief Rebuffs Allegations of Bias during VP Debate" from the Jakarta Post, focusing on the transition from print to online media or E-Paper. In this research, the two main methods used to collect data are documentation via the Jakarta Post e-paper news page and content review. This approach provides the advantage of exploring information in depth and comprehensively related to the phenomenon or event that is the focus of the research. Utilizing Teun A. van Dijk's CDA framework, the analysis encompasses macro, superstructure, and micro structures. The macro-structural analysis reveals the social and political context, identifying social groups and emphasizing narrative importance. The critical discourse superstructure analysis delves into linguistic patterns, representations of power, and strategic language use. Finally, the micro-structural analysis explores word choice, grammar, writing style, and sentence structure to understand how language constructs arguments and responds to accusations. Through these lenses, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of how the news shapes and reflects social and political dynamics, contributing valuable insights into media discourse surrounding political events in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research investigates the vocabulary development experiences of 30 fourth-semester students enrolled in the English Education Study Program at STKIP Al Maksum Langkat through their engagement with classic English literature. Although these students have received foundational English instruction, many still struggle to expand their vocabulary due to the limited contextual depth in their academic materials. To explore this issue, the study employed a qualitative design, gathering data through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals written after reading selected literary works by authors such as Shakespeare, Austen, and Dickens. The data were analyzed using open coding, category grouping, triangulation, and member checking procedures. Three major findings emerged. First, most participants (80%) relied on contextual cues, such as interpreting meanings from sentence structure and recording unfamiliar terms as key strategies for understanding new vocabulary. Second, a considerable number of students (73%) reported improvements in their vocabulary knowledge and linguistic sensitivity, including familiarity with idiomatic expressions and nuanced word meanings. Third, many learners (63%) encountered challenges, especially due to outdated vocabulary, lengthy sentence construction, and culturally unfamiliar content. These findings suggest that classic literature, when paired with reflective engagement and contextual support, can serve as a valuable medium for vocabulary enrichment in English language learning. The study recommends incorporating such texts into EFL curricula to foster deeper lexical acquisition and intercultural awareness.
