Abstract

Rapid advancements in science and technology over the past decade have greatly influenced the development of teaching materials. This accelerated progress has provided significant support to educators in enhancing the quality of both online and offline learning experiences. This study aims to develop a local wisdom-based book creator media while assessing its validity, effectiveness, and innovativeness. The research methodology employed a research and development (R&D) approach, specifically following the procedure outlined by Borg and Gall, which consists of 10 stages. However, this study focused on 8 key stages within the development process. The findings of this research indicate that the local wisdom-based book creator media demonstrate a high level of feasibility. A questionnaire was employed as the primary data collection technique to evaluate the feasibility of the media book creator. Expert assessments were obtained from media experts, material experts, and IT experts, while feedback from lecturers and students also contributed to the evaluation process. The results show that media experts evaluated it at 90%, material experts at 93%, IT experts at 95%, and student responses indicated an 85% feasibility rating, collectively suggesting the learning media to be "highly feasible" for implementation. Educators can leverage this medium to provide students with a more interactive and culturally relevant learning experience, fostering a deeper connection between academic content and their local contexts.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using flashcards to improve English vocabulary mastery among fifth-grade students at SDS Bina Setia Meradak. The research was motivated by the significant challenge of limited vocabulary acquisition in this rural elementary school, which is characterized by scarce educational resources and non-specialist teachers. The study adopted a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach, involving 20 fifth-grade students as participants. Data were collected through a vocabulary test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. The results revealed a significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery. This was evidenced by the substantial increase in the mean post-test score of 81.25 compared to the mean pre-test score of 57.50. A paired-sample t-test showed a statistically significant difference with a p-value of p<0.001, confirming the effectiveness of the intervention. The calculated effect size using Cohen’s d was 3.19333, indicating a very large effect of the flashcard method. This improvement can be attributed to the characteristics of flashcards, which facilitate visualization, repetition, and active student engagement. The study concludes that flashcards are an effective, affordable, and easily prepared instructional medium, particularly suitable for enhancing vocabulary acquisition in resource-limited rural schools. The findings also highlight the need for training non-specialist teachers to adopt innovative teaching methods to improve English language instruction.

Abstract

This study analyzes linguistic and cultural transformations in the Dayak Kanayatn community by a quantitative assessment of lexical density. This research posits that an analysis of lexical density can indicate quantifiable changes between traditional and current songs, mirroring broader cultural evolution. The research contrasts two significant musical artifacts: the traditional religious song "Amboyo," integral to the Naik Dango harvest ceremony, and the contemporary popular song "Dayakng Janjola," which embodies modern expression. This study utilizes the methodology proposed by Ure (1971) to calculate lexical density, thereby evaluating the proportion of meaningful (lexical) words relative to the total word count in the lyrics of the two songs. The results demonstrate that "Amboyo" comprises a substantially greater number of words than "Dayakng Janjola." The results indicate a linguistic transformation in Dayak Kanayatn music, shifting from a medium for conveying profound narratives, mythological, and cosmological information to a vehicle for immediate emotional expression, entertainment, and social connectivity. The study indicates that variations in lexical density represent not only a linguistic phenomena but also a quantitative reflection of language evolution, cultural transmission, and identity formation within the contemporary Dayak Kanayatn group.1
