Abstract

ABSTRACT Issues related to watershed have received primary attention in the past few decades. The hydrological conditions of the watershed area are considered crucial as a source of life. In efforts to achieve sustainable watershed management, understanding the complex hydrological dynamics is very important. The objective of this research is to simulate river discharge using the Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT) model. This study was conducted in the Mamasa Sub-watershed area. The results show that the river discharge in the Mamasa Sub-watershed has increased as it approaches the outlet (downstream) through the accumulation of discharge in larger order rivers. The Mamasa Sub-watershed also experiences a trend of increasing average annual discharge at a rate of 0.74 m3/s per year. Improvement in the discharge simulation results was achieved through a calibration process using 11 parameters. The calibration results indicate that the calibrated discharge has a higher R2 value compared to the initial simulation discharge, showing that the model calibration successfully improved the quality of the expected discharge results to reach 79.50 percent. However, the calibration results still have a low R2 value, influenced by the selection of appropriate parameters and accurate observational data. Keywords: Modeling, River discharge, SWAT, Watershed

Abstract

Abstract

The sustainability of rice fields is fundamental to maintaining regional food security, particularly in agricultural production centers such as Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Rapid population growth and spatial development have intensified pressure on productive agricultural land, increasing the risk of long-term decline in rice field availability. This study develops a spatial statistical modeling framework to predict the distribution of rice field conversion for the period 2026–2030 using an integration of Frequency Ratio (FR) and Spatial Multi-Criteria Analysis (SMCA) within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. Land cover data from 2010 and 2020 were used to identify historical conversion patterns and to construct predictive variables. Ten driving factors—including topography, slope, geomorphology, soil type, rainfall, accessibility, settlement characteristics, and spatial policy direction—were evaluated alongside protected agricultural zones as limiting constraints. Model validation using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve produced an AUC of 0.83 (success rate) and 0.75 (predictive rate), indicating good and reliable model performance. The projection results demonstrate continued pressure on rice field areas, particularly in zones influenced by infrastructure and settlement expansion. By providing spatially explicit predictions, this study offers a decision-support tool for proactive land-use regulation, agricultural protection policies, and strategic planning interventions aimed at safeguarding food self-sufficiency in the medium term.

Abstract

This study examines unequal value capture within the pine resin value chain as a locally important non-timber forest product (NTFP) in rural Indonesia (Sasaka Village, West Sulawesi Province). Using a quantitative descriptive approach, data were collected through field observations, interviews, and a census of 33 active resin tappers, complemented by information from intermediaries and processing industries. The analysis identifies three main marketing channels involving farmers, intermediaries, and a processing industry that transforms raw resin into higher-value products, namely rosin (gondorukem) and turpentine. Results show that both marketing and profit margins are highly uneven across the value chain. While farmers receive a stable price of IDR 10,000/kg, the processing industry captures the largest share of value, with margins reaching IDR 13,000/kg for rosin and IDR 63,000/kg for turpentine. Profit margins are similarly concentrated at the industrial level, particularly for turpentine (IDR 60,288/kg), reflecting economies of scale, processing capacity, and access to export markets. These findings demonstrate clear unequal value capture within the pine resin value chain, where upstream actors receive a relatively small share of the total economic benefits despite their critical role in production. This pattern indicates structural inefficiencies and imbalances in the marketing system. Strengthening farmer bargaining power, improving access to processing technologies, and promoting more equitable market linkages are essential to enhance inclusiveness and ensure the long-term sustainability of NTFP-based livelihoods.

Abstract

Based on the results of observations and interviews with our partners, namely the community around the Social Forestry area, Bura Sendana State of Community Forestry (Hutan Kemasyarakatan/HKm) located in Tallambalao Village, Majene Regency, West Sulawesi, it was found that currently, females do not play an optimal role in management of forest products because there are no particular institutions for women. Therefore, women cannot access various formal sources of assistance, information, or capital provided by government agencies, private and other supporting institutions such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or universities. Therefore, it is essential to form formal institutions specifically for women. So, the community service partnership activity that we carry out is encouraging the establishment of a Women's Farmers Group (KWT) to manage the Bura Sendana social forestry area. This initiative is expected to support empowered female farmers from a cultural and institutional perspective. Become a pioneer in managing agricultural products from forest areas, which can improve the welfare of people in villages around forest areas in the long term. The main objective of this Community Partnership Program activity is to form a KWT to manage HKM Bura Sendana. Furthermore, we designed a participatory training to strengthen the KWT institutions that have been formed.
