Abstract

Palm oil fly ash (POFA) is one of the solid wastes produced from burning palm kernel shells and coir as a steam generator for palm oil mills. POFA has a high silica content and might potentially to be used as an adsorbent. The removal of impurity metals and the separation of SiO2 by extraction process is a way to improve the performance of silica. The extraction process is influenced by several factors including the solid/liquid ratio and the stirring time. This study used a solid/liquid ratio of 1: 8, 1:10, 1:12 and a stirring time of 120; 150; 180; and 210 minutes. The results showed the highest mass of silica deposits was at a ratio of 1:12 and stirring time of 210 minutes with a mass of 18.35 grams or 73.4% of 25 grams of POFA with a silica content of 47.97% and a silica surface area 8.18 m2/g. Silica from each variation was tested on peat water. The highest removal efficiency of color, organic matter, and Fe were 80%, 46%, and 37% respectively by the extracted silica with a solid/liquid ratio 1:12 and stirring time 210 minutes.

Abstract

This study explores the role of social media in shaping university students' perceptions of academic and social success. Social media platforms have become integral to students' daily lives, influencing how they define and pursue success. The research investigates both positive and negative impacts of social media usage on students' academic achievements and social interactions. Findings indicate that when social media is used as a tool for academic support and peer collaboration, it positively correlates with higher academic performance and enhanced social engagement. Conversely, excessive or entertainment-focused use may distract students, leading to lower academic outcomes and social comparison stress. The study highlights the dual nature of social media as both a facilitator and a potential barrier to student success. Recommendations emphasize the importance of mindful and purposeful use of social media to maximize its benefits in academic and social domains. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how digital environments influence student perceptions and outcomes in higher education.

Abstract

The Siak River is a source of raw water for drinking water in Riau. The water quality of the Siak River is influenced by the season. In the rainy season, turbidity usually increases so that it can affect the drinking water treatment process at the Drinking Water Treatment Plant (IPAM). The main treatment process at IPAM to reduce turbidity that is widely used is coagulation and flocculation. The level of water turbidity will affect the coagulant dose in the coagulation flocculation process. This study aims to determine the effect of rainfall on the dose and efficiency of PAC (Poly Aluminum Chloride) coagulant in the coagulation flocculation process, in addition to providing recommendations for a comparison of PAC coagulant doses before and after rain to IPAMs that take the Siak River as a source of raw water. River water samples were taken for a week in a row before and after rain. The method used to determine the best dose in this study was the trial and error method with a fast stirring speed of 120 rpm for 1 minute and a slow stirring speed of 40 rpm for 20 minutes and sedimentation for 15 minutes with water pH conditioning of 7. The results showed that the increase in river water turbidity after rain caused the need for PAC doses to increase. Before the rain, the turbidity of the Siak River water was 36.29 - 63.4 NTU and a dose of 50 mg/L was obtained as the best dose to reduce turbidity with an efficiency of 99.17%. While after the rain, the turbidity of the river water reached 129.8 - 165.7 NTU. The best dose obtained was 60 mg/L with a turbidity removal efficiency of 99.38%.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the use of graphic organizers integrated with Islamic values can improve students’ ability to comprehend descriptive texts.  Since the true education requires a balance of cognitive development and character development or moral fortitude as the world becomes far from religious path, therefore, this study carried Islamic values as part of classroom English. The subject of this research was grade eight of SMPIT Al-Fauzi Medan of 2023/2024 academic year which consists of 25 students.  Classroom action research was implemented following Kurt Lewin's model with action research procedures, namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This research was conducted in two cycles in each cycle consists of two meetings. Data collection techniques in this study used the following instruments: interviews, field notes, questionnaires, and tests. The results of this study integration of media GO with Islamic values showed significant improvement on students' comprehension on descriptive texts. Students achieve expected grades which is higher than the minimum criteria 70 gradually at the end of the cycle. The average score of the students on the initial test was 51.25.  The average value of students in the first cycle is 58.75.  The average value of students in the second cycle is 72.80. Hence, there are positive responses from students and English teachers regarding to the use of media graphic organizers integrated with Islamic values to improve students’ comprehension on descriptive text.
