Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the difficulties experienced by students in translating English texts at Tadulako University and identifies the factors influencing these difficulties. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method involving fifth-semester students of the English Education Study Program who had completed a translation course. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and analysis of students’ translation assignments. The findings show that students encounter several major problems in translation, including limited vocabulary mastery, grammatical errors, and difficulty interpreting homonyms. Vocabulary limitation was identified as the most dominant challenge because students often struggled to understand word meanings and determine appropriate equivalents in the target language. In addition, differences in grammatical structures, especially the use of the simple past tense, frequently caused inaccurate sentence construction. Students also faced difficulties in identifying the correct meaning of homonyms based on context. Furthermore, the study reveals that affective factors, such as boredom and low motivation, significantly contribute to students’ translation problems. These findings suggest that translation difficulties are influenced not only by linguistic competence but also by students’ attitudes toward learning. Therefore, translation teaching should emphasize vocabulary development, contextual understanding, and more engaging instructional strategies to improve students’ translation abilities effectively.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the Word Association Strategy in improving the vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Palu. Vocabulary learning in the classroom was dominated by conventional techniques that provided limited opportunities for students to develop meaningful word understanding and usage. To address this issue, the study employed a quantitative method using a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students in the 2025/2026 academic year, from which two classes (VIII Cempedak and VIII Manggis) were selected through cluster random sampling. Class VIII Cempedak as the experimental group (n = 32) was taught using the Word Association Strategy, while Class VIII Manggis as the control group (n = 30) was taught using conventional methods. The study focused on students’ vocabulary mastery of word meaning and usage, particularly common nouns, action verbs, and descriptive adjectives. Data were collected through vocabulary tests and analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test at the 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 53.46 in the pre-test to 81.85 in the post-test, while the control group improved from 55.04 to 69.29. The t-test result revealed that the t-count (5.50) was higher than the t-table value (1.671), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that the Word Association Strategy effectively enhances students’ vocabulary mastery by facilitating meaningful word connections. Practically, English teachers can incorporate structured word association activities into regular vocabulary instruction to promote deeper word retention and more active student engagement in junior high school classrooms.

Abstract

This research examines the perceptions of English Language Education students at Tadulako University regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an academic support tool. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews involving active students in the 2024/2025 academic year. The findings indicate that most students have positive perceptions of AI in academic learning. Students perceive AI as useful for generating ideas, improving writing accuracy, supporting personalized learning, and providing real-time feedback. These features help students complete academic tasks more efficiently and increase their learning motivation. This finding suggests that AI can support students in overcoming common academic difficulties, particularly in writing and independent learning. The results are consistent with the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which emphasizes perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as key factors influencing technology acceptance. In this study, students accepted AI mainly because it is easy to use and provides immediate benefits in their academic activities. When students find a technology helpful and simple, they are more likely to integrate it into their learning process. However, the study also reveals several concerns. Some students expressed worries about over-dependence on AI, inaccurate information, and ethical issues such as plagiarism and loss of originality. These concerns indicate that while AI offers many advantages, its use also presents potential risks if not properly guided. Despite these challenges, most students demonstrated a good level of ethical awareness. They emphasized that AI should be used as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for their own thinking and academic effort. This shows that students understand the importance of maintaining academic integrity while using AI.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential skill for English language learners, yet junior high school students experience difficulties in understanding narrative texts because of limited vocabulary, low reading motivation, and insufficient exposure to culturally relevant reading materials. Integrating local folktales into English instruction may enhance students’ comprehension. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of Napu folktales in improving the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Lore Peore. A quantitative pre-experimental one-group pre-test-post-test design was used. The participants consisted of 40 eighth-grade students selected through total sampling. Because the population at SMP Negeri 2 Lore Peore was fewer than 100 students, 20 students from SMP Negeri 1 Lore Peore were included to complete the sample. Data were collected using a reading comprehension test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 essay questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test with SPSS version 25. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension, with the mean score increasing from 30.0250 in the pre-test to 72.5750 in the post-test (p 0.05), indicating that the use of Napu folktales effectively improved students’ reading comprehension and promoted appreciation of their local cultural heritage.
