Abstract

The use of hydrogel as a wound dressing material is currently being massively developed. In addition to functioning to protect wounds, the use of hydrogel can also provide moisture in a measured manner and can be used as a drug delivery medium. In this study, hydrogel based on CNF and glutaraldehyde crosslinking agent and addition of gelatin were developed with various compositions 0.25; 0.5; 0.75 g to increase the ability of CNF and hydrogel to absorb water so that it is good to be applied as a wound dressing. The composting of the three materials aims to obtain a hydrogel with good thermal and physical properties. Based on physical character for a good ratio of swelling (666,62%) and degree of cross-linking (94%) on the hydrogel with a composition variation of 0.5 g of CNF addition. For the thermal stability of hydrogel var 2, TMax 591oC provides better thermal stability than var 1 and var 3. The morphology of hydrogel shows very small and evenly distributed pores on the surface which can absorb more water.

Abstract

Liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) is utilized as an alternative to enhance soil quality and crop yields. Organic waste from watermelon rinds (Citrullus lanatus) serves as one of the raw materials for LOF production. This study aims to assess the impact of LOF on the growth of curly lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The research employed an experimental method with five different LOF concentrations, ranging from no LOF (control) to 10% LOF. The results indicate that LOF application does not significantly affect the height of the plants, leaf count, leaf width, or the wet weight of curly lettuce. However, the use of undiluted 100 ml LOF leads to wilting and plant death, while increasing LOF concentration does not support the optimal growth of curly lettuce.

Abstract

The difference in polarity between materials often prevents direct interaction; therefore, a compatibilizer is required to facilitate reactions between polar and non-polar substances. This study aims to investigate the effect of maleic anhydride (MA) concentration on the grafting process of MA onto polypropylene (PP) chains, using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator. The blending method employing an internal mixer was used to combine the materials, and the degree of grafting was determined via titration, with three replicates performed for accuracy. The results indicated that the highest grafting degree, 10.28%, was achieved at a composition of 86% PP, 11% MA, and 3% BPO. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis of polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) revealed new absorption peaks at wavenumbers 1707 cm and 1162 cm. Furthermore, increasing the concentration of maleic anhydride did not significantly affect the grafting degree. This study provides valuable insight for the development of PPg-MA compatibilizers.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the impact of pretreatment on empty fruit bunches (EFB) of palm oil fibers before the pulping process on the quality of the molded pulp produced. The study includes EFB fiber pretreatment processes, pulp production, pulp molding, physical characteristic analysis, and molded pulp performance evaluation. The pulp production process involves acid-base hydrolysis reactions. The produced molded pulp is done manually. Characterization of the molded pulp includes measurements of paper grammage, thickness, density, and moisture content. The characteristics of pulp produced from pretreated EFB fibers are as follows: an average grammage value of 415.48 g/m, paper thickness of 1.53 mm, water absorption capacity of 13.33-33.33%, density of paper of 0,026 x 106 - 0,027 x 106 g/m3, and a smooth surface morphology. Meanwhile, the characteristics of pulp produced from without pretreatment EFB fibers include an average grammage value of 372.18 g/m, paper thickness of 0.77 mm, water absorption capacity of 20.34-43.21%, density of paper of 0,004 x 106 - 0,008 x 106 g/m3, and a rough surface morphology due to pores on the fiber surface.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to provide training and strengthen communication to farmer groups about certified oil palm nurseries. The activity partner is a farmer group (Poktan) Putra Mandiri of Gunung Ambat village, Sei Bingai District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. The productivity of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) in this village is still low because the oil palm seeds used are "mariles ” seeds or random seeds that are not certified. The form of activities carried out are: (a) Training to partners on certified oil palm seedlings and seedling techniques, and (b) Practical practice of planting certified oil palm sprouts on partner land with DXP Simalungun variety. The results of the training and practical practice showed an increase in the knowledge and skills of farmer groups about certified palm oil seeds and nursery techniques, as well as the formation of a more effective communication model in the form of a combination of theory and practical practice. Strengthening this communication is key in conveying clear and applicable information, so that it can encourage the sustainability of more productive oil palm farming businesses.

Abstract

This study aims to isolate and characterize pulp derived from oil palm empty fruit bunch fibers. Oil palm empty fruit bunch fiber has great potential as an alternative raw material in the paper industry due to its abundant availability and environmentally friendly nature. The pulp isolation process was carried out using acid and base hydrolysis methods. Characterization carried out includes measurement of cellulose content and pulp quality analysis. Pulp quality parameters analyzed included initial milled degree, bright degree, number of stains, extractive content (dichloromethane), moisture content (AD), and mechanical strength indices, such as tear index, crack index, and tensile index at a milled degree of 300 ml CSF. The results showed that the pulp produced from oil palm empty fruit bunch fibers through the acid-base hydrolysis process had a cellulose content of 56-58%. The quality analysis of this pulp refers to the quality requirements according to SNI 6107 for leaf-bleached Kraft Pulp (LBKP).
