Data were collected systematically through in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and documentation. Data were analyzed by applying six steps of Auerbach& Silverstein's analysis. The result revealed that a sense of liking was the most underlying issue in the informants’ achievement in English speaking skills, especially the past sense of liking. The result also revealed that the informants had a unique way in learning the English speaking skills, it was in an unpredictable way; they learned whenever and wherever they like, according to their own desire or willingness or pleasure, situational and curious – based, and free from formal regulations.

Data were collected through Focus Group Discussion, Interview, and Observation and analyzed by several stages i.e. data reduction, displaying data, categorizing, and verifying and concluding. The results showed that oral interactions can decrease both in the language community and learning environment as the dominant use of WA that is not wise. Nevertheless, the use of WA applications also had some positive contributions in building a real relationship. Finally, the assumption that the negative impact of using the WA application should be able to change the mindset and positive attitude of the scholars in initiating and defending an oral interaction in the learning environment.

Abstract

Debating on Second Language Acquisition is not merely in terms of concept but also the real phenomena which postulate each research result. It needs more investigation on SLA due to the various realities on how children and adults acquire and learn any language. This research aims to describe how children and adults acquire and learn their first and second language. Participants consisted of children and adults whose ages determined by the researcher based on the purposive sampling technique. They were all six persons and chosen based on certain characteristics. Content analysis technique was applied in order to analyze all data gained. The result showed that since human alive inside mother’s womb especially at up to the age of three months, a fetus has tried to acquire sounds subconsciously. Language proficiency is really determined by three factors of Phased Process Approach namely Subconscious Acquisition, Conscious Acquisition, and Learning. The ideal time for learning something is begun from the age of 2 or 3 years old, by the fact that children have had the ability to bear a meaning on any input that they catch. The learning process has been begun within the process of acquisition. Based on the findings, it is clear that the children acquire the language step by step based on the development of the brain. Children acquire language is just the same as adult in acquiring the language although there will be some constraints faced by adult concern with the first language because adult has had the strong basis of the first language just than children.

Abstract

We propose a Mutual Language Policy to mediate shared interests between Chinese and indigenous workers in minimalizing frictions related to language attitudes, socio-cultural attitudes, ideologies and identities. So far, language policy has only sided with indigenous interests initiated by the government and has not involved foreign interests. By using multiple case study, we analyzed language attitudes, socio-cultural attitudes, as well as ideologies and identities of Chinese and indigenous workers to understand the frictions that occurred. We found that the language attitude of the Chinese workers was considered positive while the dominant use of Mandarin was only caused by the lack of mastery of both Indonesian and English. Next, the socio-cultural attitude of Chinese workers that seemed exclusive was basically caused by two main things, firstly, their concern about counterculture and contra behavior towards indigenous people.Secondly, the social class in employment context. Finally, the defense of the ideology and identity of the indigenous community seemed so strong was because of the collective defense system. Shared interests among them in a mutual language policy concept are also discussed.

Abstract

This study explores lie detection within cross-cultural communication by examining linguistic and cultural cues that indicate deception. Employing a qualitative approach with an explanatory comparative method, the research involved six participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data were collected through observation and interviews using audio-visual scenarios designed to elicit both honest and deceptive responses. The findings reveal that linguistic cues to deception include uncertainty in speech, changes in intonation, unsynchronized eye contact and body language, and the use of ambiguous or vague expressions. Cultural cues also play a critical role, with norms, values, and traditions shaping how individuals express and interpret lying behaviors. For example, avoiding eye contact may signal dishonesty in one culture but signify respect in another. The research highlights that lie detection strategies grounded in single-cultural paradigms are insufficient for multicultural contexts. As a solution, the study proposes a new model that integrates linguistic and cultural parameters, offering a holistic framework for more accurate lie detection in intercultural settings. This integrated model contributes to both theoretical and practical domains, including law enforcement, diplomacy, and international business, where cultural sensitivity is essential. By advancing understanding of how language and culture interact in deceptive communication, the study addresses a critical gap in the literature and promotes more equitable and effective approaches to detecting deception in global interactions.
