Abstract

This study examines the ideology in the Free Market Presidential Candidate narrative on the Mata Najwa program on Trans 7. Using Fairclough's (2013) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, this study investigates how the narrative critiques oligarchic practices and their impact on democracy in Indonesia. This study addresses three main questions: (1) How does the narrative critique oligarchy and its implications for democratic practices? (2) What linguistic and rhetorical strategies are used to convey criticism of the presidential nomination threshold? (3) How do textual discourse, discourse practices, and socio-cultural contexts shape public perceptions of political dynamics? This analysis follows Fairclough's three-dimensional CDA model: textual analysis, discourse practices, and socio-cultural practices. The research findings reveal that the narrative uses sharp diction, satire, and metaphorical language to express concerns and criticisms of the Constitutional Court, the House of Representatives (DPR), and political parties. The narrative reflects public dissatisfaction with political elites and raises concerns about the future of democracy under oligarchic influence. This research contributes to understanding how media narratives function as a critique of political reality as well as a tool to shape public perceptions of democratic practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana penerapan hegemoni patriarki dalam novel terjemahan The Stars Shine Down karya Sidney Sheldon.

Abstract

As the demand for 21st-century communication skills grows, English language education must evolve beyond grammar and vocabulary to include digital literacy and collaborative competencies. This study explores the distinctive use of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in a first-semester Basic English course for Communication Science students at a private university in Indonesia. The research examines how PBL enhances student engagement, builds speaking confidence, and fosters real-world language use through digital tools, providing a context-specific approach to foundational English education. A qualitative case study design involving 105 students was employed over a 14-week academic period. Data were gathered through student reflections, structured questionnaires, and multimedia project evaluations, and were analyzed thematically to capture students’ learning experiences and performance outcomes. Findings show that PBL significantly boosted speaking confidence, particularly through tasks such as video production and group projects. These tasks were the most effective in improving language skills and student engagement, distinguishing this study from traditional language instruction. However, challenges such as time management, group accountability, and technical difficulties were noted, particularly among students with limited digital literacy. Positive group dynamics and instructor support were critical in overcoming these obstacles. This study offers insights into the intersection of PBL, digital literacy, and language learning, especially for low-level learners in Communication Science. It emphasizes the importance of inclusive, student-centered learning environments that meet the evolving demands of 21st-century communication.

Abstract

As the effort to have the insight into the existing status of a local language in Indonesia especially in the academic setting viewed as the respected discourse, this current study aims to delineate the attitudes of millennial students towards lecturer’s code mixing to Sundanese during courses. 42 responses reflecting respondents’ perspectives towards the issue were collected via qualitative questionnaire. To reveal the view of participants on the issue under the context of higher education, responses in the forms of 62 clauses were analysed by the transitivity framework of Halliday and Matthiessen. The findings of this SFL study shows that lecturer’s code mixing to Sundanese during courses were viewed by 74% of Sundanese and non-Sundanese participants in positive ways while the rest addressed it with negative attitude. The positive attitudes were respectively represented in material, mental, relational, and existential processes while the negative attitudes were constructed sequentially in relational, material and mental, verbal, and existential clauses. The main reasons in the positive attitudes as revealed by the transitivity analysis are associated with the needs to maintain and preserve local language especially Sundanese via the academic channel. HIGHLIGHTS: The processes of meaning making in positive-attitude responses are realized especially in material clauses to establish the importance of preserving local languages especially Sundanese through the academic channel. The processes of meaning making in negative-attitude responses are realized especially in relational clauses to give priority to the negative impact of using Sundanese on the academic aspect especially for non-Sundanese students. The academic setting viewed as the respected world can be a medium for the co -existence of national, international, and local languages

Abstract

The objective of this research is to examine the use of translation strategies to translate robotics terms in Big Hero 6 – Hiro to the Rescue novel from English to Indonesian. The aim is to find out what strategies the translator mostly uses to translate robotics terms. This research uses qualitative method where the result of research with this method is strongly influenced by the views, thoughts, and knowledge possessed by the researcher. Through the research, from seventeen translation strategies, the translator uses seven translation strategies to translate robotics terms in the novel. Those translation strategies are: (1) transposition 15 times or (46%), (2) naturalization 5 times or (15%), (3) literal 4 times or (12%), (4) modulation 4 times (12%), (5) reduction 1 times (3%), (6) descriptive equivalent 2 times or (6%), and (7) transfer 2 time (6%). Therefore, more that 50% robotics terms are translated by using transposition strategy. It is inferred that there are some changing position of words and phrases from English to Indonesian so that the translator must find the most equivalent translation by finding the nearest style in TT. Keywords: novel, robotics terms, translation strategy

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between language and socio-cultural structure by comparing the inaugural speeches of President Joko Widodo (2014) and Prabowo Subianto (2024) through the lens of Fairclough’s Critical [ll1] Discourse Analysis. The research seeks to answer the following questions: (1) How are linguistic choices used to represent the leaders’ political vision? (2) What ideologies are embedded in their speeches? and (3) How do discourse practices reflect broader socio-cultural contexts? The findings indicate that Joko Widodo’s inaugural address foregrounded the ideology of populist nationalism through emphasis on “hard work,” “mutual cooperation,” and “unity,” reflecting an image of collective struggle and inclusivity. In contrast, Prabowo Subianto’s speech articulated an ideology of authoritative reformism, marked by discourses of corruption eradication, food self-sufficiency, and “polite democracy,” which positioned him as a strong leader seeking order, moral authority, and national sovereignty. While Jokowi’s discourse leaned toward constructing solidarity among the people, Prabowo’s discourse sought legitimacy through the language of discipline and protection of national dignity. These results demonstrate that inaugural speeches not only present policy directions but also construct ideological positions that shape political legitimacy.

Abstract

This study examines the perspectives of non-English major students regarding the role of interviewing native speakers in enhancing their English proficiency at a public online institution in Indonesia. A mixed-method design with a sequential explanatory approach was implemented. Quantitative data were collected from 50 non-English major students using a Google Form questionnaire and subjected to descriptive analysis to discern overarching perceptual trends. After that, we looked at the open-ended responses qualitatively to find out more about the things that were shaping those perceptions. The results show that most students think that interviewing native speakers is challenging and interesting way to improve their speaking confidence, listening comprehension, and vocabulary since they have to use English directly with the native speakers. The qualitative findings indicate that students regard the activity as a genuine learning experience that enhances real-life communication and boosts their enthusiasm to actively engage with English. In conclusion, the study indicates that incorporating interviews with native speakers is an effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing English competence among learners from non-English academic backgrounds.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the symptoms of stage fright in students in English public speaking classes. The study approach uses a qualitative survey consisting of four open-ended questions. The data in this study were taken through direct observation of English public speaking classes, document reports on the progress of students learning public speaking from the teacher and interviews. The data analysis procedure was carried out in three stages, including 1) data reduction, which is the process of collecting data according to the focus of the research, 2) presenting data through the process of categorizing data, classifying and analyzing the process, and 3) drawing conclusions to find out the results. solving research problems. The results of the data analysis concluded that there were two general symptoms associated with student stage fright during public speaking class practice, namely physiological symptoms and cognitive symptoms. Thus, the teacher should be able to direct students to apply strategies to overcome speaking anxiety such as increasing preparation and practice. These findings have implications for teachers' understanding of the concept of the importance of understanding the character of students' anxiety in practicing English public speaking in class, so that teachers can choose learning methods or techniques that are appropriate to students' anxiety levels
