Abstract

This article aims to explain the choice of music among adolescents with a focus on popular music and classical music. The research was conducted on 12 Junior High School (SMP) students at 12-14 years. The study was conducted qualitatively through virtual interviews using Zoom Cloud Meeting. The Sampling technique used purposive sampling based on the specified criteria: (1) active as music listeners; (2) listening to music for 120 minutes per week; (3) willing to take part in the interview stage in 180 minutes. Observations were made on the adolescents' responses to visual, audio, and audiovisual shows presented by researchers through Microsoft Powerpoint during the interview session. This study shows that teenagers tend to choose popular music and classical music due to several factors, namely the experience of listening to music and the environment in which they live. Adolescents who choose classical music are supported by their environment and family background who are familiar with classical music. Classical music is less popular among teenagers because of limited references and difficulties in enjoying or interpreting music without lyrics. Teenagers choose popular music for its uplifting beats and understandable lyrics.  This research presents the heterogeneity of subjects from different cities which can open up opportunities for further studies.

Abstract

Abstract

AbstractThis article aims to examine musical performances from an ecomusicological perspective as a reflection of the shifts in performances that occurred during the Covid 19 pandemic. The new order in the pandemic era has changed the nature of performances from the real world to the virtual world. Ecomusicology is an intersection between music studies and ecological studies that elaborates the fields of music, culture, and environment studies in a multi-perspective. The case study in this study is Konser Serenade Bunga Bangsa at the Driyarkara Auditorium, Yogyakarta. This study uses a musical performance ecomusicological analysis framework formulated by Bolye & Waterman, namely the factors that underlie sonic gestures. The results showed that there was an interdependent relationship between each performance component. Changes in the performance landscape that occur are a consequence of the nature of the network system, namely non-linear dynamics, spontaneous emergence and feedback cycles. Ecological awareness encourages humankind as part of the universe to explore and adapt to various changes. This can be achieved through cooperative, creative, and innovative collaboration among communities in music performance networks to nurture a sustainable musical culture. Keywords: ecomusicology; musical performance; environment; interdependent

Abstract

With an emphasis on improving violin sound quality, this study explores the acoustic dynamics of the FPSD Orchestra Room at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Direct and reflected sound are the two factors that impact the phenomena of interior sound. This research emphasizes the crucial balance between sound absorption and reflection to optimize the acoustic environment and ensure clarity and richness in violin performances. Improving acoustic conditions is vital to increase audience experience and performance quality. The study used a qualitative descriptive research style combining literature review and observations. The research site was the FPSD Orchestra Room, renowned for its historical significance and contribution to music education. The observations revealed significant acoustic obstacles that adversely affected the violin sound's clarity, including excessive reverberation and unequal sound dispersion. The literature review revealed the theoretical underpinnings of sound propagation, reverberation, absorption, reflection, and diffraction. The acoustic environment can be greatly enhanced by introducing sound-absorbing materials to optimize reverberation duration, controlling reflections with diffusers, and utilizing adaptive acoustic systems. Furthermore, combining virtual acoustics technology with digital sound processing systems allows for dynamic control over acoustic parameters, increasing the performance space's adaptability. These improvements provide a customized acoustic environment that supports a variety of musical performances and guarantees the audience a clear, engaging auditory experience. This study emphasizes the significance of fusing cutting-edge technology innovations with conventional acoustic design concepts to attain optimal sound quality in performance halls. Innovation and research must never stop to improve these acoustic settings even further.
