Abstract

Abstract. The discourse on women’s beauty and femininity are inseparable from the patriarchal cultural construction. Women are to constantly strive to achieve a standard, that is known as ‘beautiful’ to men. The purpose of this research was to study the myth of beauty and consumer culture in a ‘chick-lit’ novel entitled Beauty Case by Icha Rahmanti. Data for this study was gathered from fundamental research that used a qualitative research design. This study utilized the notion of beauty in the various context presented by Wolf and the interpretation of beauty in marketing and colonial discourse raised by Priyatna, as it’s a theoretical framework. Wilson and Wolby’s idea of consumer culture was also employed to examine female consumer culture in this novel. The finding of this study is that the myth of beauty in Beauty Case revolves around profession, culture, and sexuality. This study also concludes that the consumer culture of the main and other female characters in this novel is very much influenced by the myth of beauty constructed by men. The female characters constantly try to look young and seek recognition from men in matters regarding their appearance. Besides that, Rahmanti’s female characters also always try to gain the approval of their deeds from their society.   Keywords: Myths of Beauty, Consumer Culture, Chick Lit, Beauty Case

Abstract

Tales generally comes from oral traditions, which were later written to be passed for generations. One of the prominent European tale authors in the 17th century was Charles Perrault whose works have been adapted by literary authors throughout the world. Tahar Ben Jelloun, a francophone author from Morocco, performed reécriture on Perrault’s stories in his book Mes Contes de Perrault (2014). This study identifies the new elements Ben Jelloun gives to the tale Le Petit Chaperon Rouge with the result in the form of a short story called La Petite à la Burqa Rouge. The two texts which spanned four centuries were examined using descriptive analysis method. Results of the study showed that despite the maintenance of the main sequence of Charles Perrault’s tale, Ben Jelloun carries out the orientalization process on the tale Little Red Riding Hood in the forms of text delocalization, time and place transpositions, physical and mental reconstructions of the characters and the infiltration of feminist ideology and social criticism. Ben Jelloun’s active reception should be given appreciation as to the addition of colors and new ideas without any alteration on the old works

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. This study discusses the 'toxic relationship' and mental illness experienced by female adolescent characters in the novel Represi (2018) by Fakhrisina Amalia. The method applied in the study is descriptive qualitative. Because it discusses psychological problems and girl adolescents, the research approach used is literary psychology and feminist literary criticism. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences are quoted from the object of research after closed reading, to then be classified, interpreted, and studied with relevant theories. The results of the study show that: (1) all the constructive elements of the text show the effects of unhealthy relationship in the form of mental illnes in female adolescent character. (2) The effort to the suicide of the character is a form of repression as a form of self-defense mechanism. (3) The 'toxic relationship' between the female protagonist and her lover reflects the gender inequality between men as the dominant party and women as the dominated. (4) The violence shown in the novel is not only physical but also verbal and emotional. From this analysis, it can be argued that unequal relationships in love have the potential to place women as victims who are physically and mentally harmed.

Abstract

This study aims to dismantle the myths of beauty and consumer culture in the second chick lit of Icha Rahmanti, entitled Beauty Case (2005). The novel was examined using a feminist literary criticism approach and analyzed using descriptive-qualitative methods. The theoretical references used mainly are the ideas of Wolf (2017) to interpret beauty in various contexts, as well as the meaning of beauty in colonial and market discourse according to Priyatna (2018b). The issue of consumer culture is further discussed with the rationale of Wilson (1985) and Bowlby (1993). The results showed that: (1) in accordance with Wolf's ideas, the forms of beauty myths revealed in the novel included moving in the areas of work, culture, and sexuality. (2) The consumer culture that is experienced by the main characters and other female characters in the novel is the impact of the beauty myth, namely because of the desire to be seen, the demands of the environment, and the desire to look young.

This study aims to explore the complexity of the narrative structure of the novel La Dentellière (The Lacemaker) by Pascal Lainé, the French who wins Prix Goncourt in 1974. The book talks about different understandings of the love of two characters, Pomme and Aimery, which are narrated with complex storytelling techniques. The discussion in this paper focuses on the storytelling strategy with the analysis of perspective and diegesis perspective angling techniques. The research method used is descriptive analysis with objective approach. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences were collected from la Dentellière's novel with literature study techniques. The results of this study indicate that the theme of love which is considered simple can be multi-interpretative when told with a variety of points of view. The problem of social and educational disparity between the two figures has an impact on differences in understanding of the concept of love that is not bridged by tolerance, understanding, and good communication.

Abstract

The Nazi ruling since 1933 made no secret of his dislike of Jews. Adolf Hitler even declared that "rational antisemitism must lead to a system of legal opposition, the ultimate goal of wiping out all Jews" (Mein Kampf, 1925: 27). He also developed the idea that Jews are the evil race that dominates the world. Nazi anti-Semitism is instilled in religious situations and in a political context. Then, the Nazis added a further dimension, racial anti-semitism. With the logic that Jews are not religious but racial communities, the Nazis launched various aggressions in the form of discriminatory, racist, and Holocaust. This dark phenomenon in human history is revealed in Charlotte's novel by David Foenkinos, a French writer who often receives literary awards. The discussion will be conducted by descriptive analysis method through structural approach which includes assessment of character, background, and point of view. Key words : Discrimination, Racism, Holocaust, Charlotte
