Abstract

This study aims to dismantle the myths of beauty and consumer culture in the second chick lit of Icha Rahmanti, entitled Beauty Case (2005). The novel was examined using a feminist literary criticism approach and analyzed using descriptive-qualitative methods. The theoretical references used mainly are the ideas of Wolf (2017) to interpret beauty in various contexts, as well as the meaning of beauty in colonial and market discourse according to Priyatna (2018b). The issue of consumer culture is further discussed with the rationale of Wilson (1985) and Bowlby (1993). The results showed that: (1) in accordance with Wolf's ideas, the forms of beauty myths revealed in the novel included moving in the areas of work, culture, and sexuality. (2) The consumer culture that is experienced by the main characters and other female characters in the novel is the impact of the beauty myth, namely because of the desire to be seen, the demands of the environment, and the desire to look young.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the complexity of the narrative structure of the novel La Dentellière (The Lacemaker) by Pascal Lainé, the French who wins Prix Goncourt in 1974. The book talks about different understandings of the love of two characters, Pomme and Aimery, which are narrated with complex storytelling techniques. The discussion in this paper focuses on the storytelling strategy with the analysis of perspective and diegesis perspective angling techniques. The research method used is descriptive analysis with objective approach. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences were collected from la Dentellière's novel with literature study techniques. The results of this study indicate that the theme of love which is considered simple can be multi-interpretative when told with a variety of points of view. The problem of social and educational disparity between the two figures has an impact on differences in understanding of the concept of love that is not bridged by tolerance, understanding, and good communication.

Abstract

The Nazi ruling since 1933 made no secret of his dislike of Jews. Adolf Hitler even declared that "rational antisemitism must lead to a system of legal opposition, the ultimate goal of wiping out all Jews" (Mein Kampf, 1925: 27). He also developed the idea that Jews are the evil race that dominates the world. Nazi anti-Semitism is instilled in religious situations and in a political context. Then, the Nazis added a further dimension, racial anti-semitism. With the logic that Jews are not religious but racial communities, the Nazis launched various aggressions in the form of discriminatory, racist, and Holocaust. This dark phenomenon in human history is revealed in Charlotte's novel by David Foenkinos, a French writer who often receives literary awards. The discussion will be conducted by descriptive analysis method through structural approach which includes assessment of character, background, and point of view. Key words : Discrimination, Racism, Holocaust, Charlotte

Abstract

KATA KUNCI: kritik sastra feminis; Netty Virgiantini, objektifikasi; perempuan; resiliensi  OBJECTIVES AND WOMEN'S RESILIENCE IN NETTY VIRGIANTINI's NOVEL PEREMPUAN BAYANGAN ABSTRACT: This study aims to reveal the objectification and resilience of women in the novel Perempuan Bayangan by Netty Virgiantini. The results of this study indicate that women are prone to objectification, as experienced by the main female character, Ningrum. The objectification was carried out by her parents (who forced her to marry), her two prospective parents-in-law (who rejected her because she was unable to give offspring), Satria (who used her to get rid of loneliness and indulge sexual desires), and the spirit of Utari (who expected her to become a substitute wife). The female character responds to objectification with resilience verbally and also in the form of active action. KEYWORDS: feminist literary criticism; Netty Virgiantini, objectification; resilience; women

Abstract

Psychologically, humans have a tendency to love reality and fiction because of life in between. With its unlimited imagination, humans can choose the preferred model of reality or fiction. If he chooses to be a good observer, a good and patient guesser in waiting for answers to important questions, the detective story can be an interesting reading alternative. In general, the detective story developed along with the rapid urbanization as a result of the industrial revolution. Life in big cities becomes insecure because of the increasing population density, unemployment, poverty and crime. To be able to reduce the saturation and tension experienced everyday, the public also entertain themselves with reading. Apparently people love reading about mysterious or even frightening events, because it always ends with a rational explanation of the various puzzles that cling to the reading. The crime-themed book makes readers familiar with the presence of criminals and law enforcers who are hunting him. Comics also called 'image literature', can also be a medium of telling of crimes favored by various circles. In this paper, we will discuss the phenomenon of the existence of detective comics in France and Japan with cultural comparative methods and studied with relevant theories. The results showed that because they came from different cultural backgrounds and published times, several things were found that showed differences between French and Japanese detective comics, including those related to characterization, public, story and cultural backgrounds, and comic formats. While the things that are common among them are the profession of detective figures who work more independently and prominently, and the presence of local police who are supportive of the character's movements, despite the fact that they often arrive late at the scene.

Abstract

This research was conducted to uncover the phenomenon of code mixing in the Ika Natassa’s novel of Antologi Rasa by using descriptive qualitative method and sociolinguistic approach. The frame of research concept  is based on theoretical references that relate sociolinguistics, bilingualism-plurilingualism, with code-mixed-code switching. From the data collected, there are mixed codes in the form of (1) word insertion which is then divided into word classes, namely nouns, adjectives, conjunctions, and interjections, (2) insertion of phrases in nominal phrases, prepositional phrases, and adjunctival phrases, (3) baster insertion, (4) clause insertion, and (5) idiom insertion. The research also shows that the characters and narrators in the novel of Antologi Rasa, namely: Keara, Harris, and Ruly, are shown as bilingual metropolitan young figures who actively and consistently use a combination of Indonesian and English to communicate. The characters, especially Keara and Harris, seem very free to practice code mixing, both when talking to other characters and speaking inwardly. The use of mixed code can be considered to support the categorization and labeling of the Antologi Rasa novel as a popular metropolitan work.
