Abstract

This study discusses Depression in the lyrics of the Green Day song. The focus is on the depressive symptoms implied in the lyrics of the songs "Basket Case", and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". The purpose of this research is to find out the types of depression, the causes of depression, and the effects of depression in the lyrics of Green Day's songs entitled "Basket Case", and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and to describe the symptoms of depression described in the lyrics of the two songs. . This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach and data analysis collection techniques include collecting data, finding words and sentences and including words and sentences that reflect the type of depression. The results of this study found that the symptoms of depression that appear in the lyrics of the songs "Basket Case" and "boulevard of broken rage" include low self-evaluation, loss of emotional attachment, and negative feelings about self.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fase-fase culture shock dan penyebabnya yang dialami Christopher McCandless. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Pendekatan psikologis diadopsi untuk menganalisis fase dan penyebab culture shock. Data diambil dari film Into the Wild yang dialami oleh tokoh utama, Christopher McCandless. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat empat fase culture shock yang dialami Christopher McCandless dalam film Into the Wild, yaitu fase bulan madu, fase krisis, fase pemulihan, dan fase penyesuaian. Penulis juga menemukan dua penyebab culture shock yang dialami oleh tokoh Christopher McCandless, yaitu reaksi stres, kelelahan kognitif, culture shock peran, dan culture shock pribadi.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis jenis-jenis profaniti yang ditemukan dalam film Tony Kaye "American History X" berdasarkan teori Patridge. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari Film 'American History X' dalam bentuk kata, frasa, dan kalimat. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara menonton film secara intensif, mengidentifikasi ujaran yang mengandung profaniti yang digunakan oleh karakter dan menulis kata-kata yang ditemukan dalam film. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam film "American History X" oleh Tony Kaye terdapat ada lima tipe yang ditemukan, yaitu seven dirty words, strong other words, excretory words, sexual words, dan mild other words.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan ungkapan paralel yang digunakan dalam upacara tegù watá yang merupakan upacara tradisional masyarakat Boru sebagai suatu ungkapan syukur atas hasil panen yang diperoleh. Penelitian ini merupakan kajian linguistik kebudayaan yang berlandaskan pada pendekatan antropologi linguistik dan linguistik kebudayaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskripsi kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari data lisan dan tulisan berupa tuturan adat dalam upacara syukur atas hasil panen (Tegù Watá). Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode membaca dan wawancara dengan teknik mencatat dan rekaman. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ekspresi paralel yang digunakan dalam upacara Tegù Watá memiliki dua bentuk, yaitu grammatikal paralelisme dan leksikal parallelisme. Adapun lima makna yang terkandung dalam expresi paralel yang digunakan, yakni makna persatuan, harapan untuk kesehatan, harapan untuk kesuksesan, religius, dan kebersamaan. Selain itu, masyarakat Boru juga memiliki pandangan tersendiri kepada Tuhan, leluhur dan kampung halamannya yang terkandung dalam expresi paralel pada upacara tersebut.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini, yang pertama adalah untuk mengidentifikasi kategori tindak ilokusi dan kedua adalah untuk menjelaskan makna tentang tindak ilokusi dari ujarannya Abdur dalam Stand Up Comedy Indonesia season 4. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis ujaran-ujaran Abdur sesuai dengan kategori-kategori dari tindak ilokusi dan menginterpretasikan ujaran-ujaran tersebut. Data diambil dari ujaran-ujaran Abdur dalam video Stand Up Comedy Indonesia season 4. Teori yang digunakan untuk menganalisis kategori-kategori dari tindak ilokusi yaitu menggunakan teori dari Searle (1979) dan untuk menemukan makna menggunakan teori dari Grice (2013). Hasil menunjukan bahwa ada tiga kategori dalam tindak ilokusi dari ujaran-ujaran Abdur yakni assertive, directive, and expressive category. Banyak ujaran Abdur termasuk dalam assertive category, yakni berbicara tentang seorang pembicara yang berusaha untuk memperoleh atau mendapatkan suatu keyakinan dalam melakukan suatu keyakinan tertentu, yang mana berbicara tentang fakta dari situasi yang ada di Propinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur yang di ekspresikan didalam komedi. Ujaran-ujaran Abdur mempunyai keunikan tersendiri karena ujaran-ujaran tersebut mempunyai makna mendalam yang tersirat didalam komedi.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out the aspects of American Individualism as reflected in Gardner as the main character in film The Pursuit of Happiness. This film directed by Gabriele Muccino which the story is taken from the real life by an author named Chris Gardner. This film raises issues in social life, especially in the main character Chris Gardner regarding aspects of American individualism. This research used descriptive-qualitative method. In this research conducted stages of research in collecting the data, they are: first, watching the film carefully, writing the data on utterance and actions in accordance with the problem formulation and then identifying utterance and actions. This study used the theory of Emerson (1941) about self-confidence and self-reliance. The results showed that there were three forms of self-confidence (personal ability, self-concept and social interaction) and self-reliance (responsibility). The aspect of individualism experienced by Chris Gardner is to show the community and every individual about the struggle and hard work that requires self-reliance and self-confidence. Abstract

Imperative sentence is a sentence that request the person we are speaking with to do or not to something. Imperative is also found in local language like Keo language. The purpose of this study was to find out the types and functions of imperative found in Keo language used by Uluwagha community in daily conversation using the theory of Hornby (1976) and to analyze about imperative sentence adopted the method issued by Dorney 2007. The study used descriptive qualitative. There were some steps that the writer used to analyze the data. First step was interviewing the informants who were native speakers of Keo language. The second was to translate imperative sentences into Keo language in English and the last was to make the conclusion. The results of the study show that there are two types and six functions of imperative found in Keo language. They are positive and negative imperatives.

Abstract

This study aimed at exploring the types of common grammatical errors are found in the students’ writing and finding out the dominant type of common grammatical errors found in students’ writing. This study used descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. The data were taken from the 21 compositions of students who took Basic Writing Class in English Letter Study Program, Faculty of Language and Literature of Flores University. Each writing has three kinds of writing. They are about family member, individual favorite object, and natural objects descriptions. The upshots of the study indicates there are 9,1% students who made errors in verb tense, 12,6% students who made errors in subject-verb agreement, 15,3% students made error in article, 4,5% students made error in preposition, 6,3% students made error in number, 4,5% students made error in pronoun, 1,8% students made error in possessive, 1,8% students made in word choice, 11,7% students made error in spelling, 19,8% students made error in word order, 7,2% students made error in capitalization, and 5,4% students made error in punctuation. The errors are caused from many factors; the students are still confused to choose the right word in a sentence because of the lack of knowledge or poor vocabularies and its use. Besides, errors happened because of their first language (Indonesian logical thinking), or we could say the learners’ mother tongue interference (interlingua source), some students tried to translate the words one by one from Indonesian language into English without paying attention to the English structure rules.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing Othello’s deterioration in William Shakespeare’s The Moor of Venice through the intrinsic aspects of the drama. This study adopted structuralism approach and the theory of wholeness to answer the problem issued. This study used descriptive qualitative design that the data were taken from William Shakespeare the Tragedy of Othello the Moor of Venice edited by Alvin Kernan (1963). The results denote that Othello has flaws which lead to his deterioration. Gullible and excessive in loving his wife are the flaws that produce jealousy. Finally, without knowing the fact, Othello kills his wife, and he also kills himself after realizing the truth. The flaws of Othello are identified through plot, character, thought/theme, diction, rhythm, and spectacle.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the types of associative meaning in proverbs in Bajawa language used by people in Doka village. There were five types of associative meaning, stylistic or social meaning, effective meaning, reflective meaning, and collocative meaning as stated by Leech (1981). This study used qualitative method to analyze the data. Collecting data adopted was that the writer is the main instrument by preparing the list of proverbs in Bajawa language used by people in Doka village, then, choosing some native speakers to complete the data. Data analysis was by classifying proverbs into five types of associative meaning. The analysis shows that there are four types associative meaning can be found on proverbs. Proverbs are used in different context. They are in birth context, wedding context, reba context, process of building the traditional house and death context, affective meaning found in proverbs of wedding context. The result shows that there are 103 proverbs used by people in Doka village. The writer found there are 65 proverbs in connotative meaning, 8 proverbs in stylistic or social, 25 proverbs in affective meaning and 5 proverbs in reflective meaning. Those proverbs are used in different context.
