Abstract

Abstract: This study systematically reviews the role of swimming in improving physical fitness based on recent empirical evidence. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using PRISMA and PICO frameworks was conducted through the Scopus database. From 426 studies identified, 20 met inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Results show that 94.4% had moderate to high quality, confirming swimming’s significant effects on aerobic capacity, body composition, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and functional fitness. Aquatic environments provide resistance and buoyancy, promoting physiological adaptations with minimal injury risk. Practically, swimming is recommended as an effective, safe, and inclusive exercise for all age groups. Future studies should determine optimal training doses and explore physiological mechanisms underlying aquatic fitness adaptations. Keywords: swimming, physical fitness, aquatic exercise, systematic literature review   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan meninjau secara sistematis peran aktivitas renang terhadap peningkatan kebugaran jasmani berdasarkan bukti empiris terbaru.

Abstract

Background: Pedagogical models such as Sport Education (SE), Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR), Cooperative Learning (CL), Models-Based Practice (MBP) and Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) have come to the fore in physical education (PE) as vehicles for psychological and character development. Yet no integrative review has combined bibliometric mapping with systematic synthesis on the link between models and outcomes. Purpose: This Bibliometric–Systematic Literature Review (B-SLR) explored the volume, intellectual core, thematic evolution, and empirical evidence relating pedagogical models in PE to psychological and character outcomes from 2000 to 2026. Methods: Following the ten-step B-SLR framework of Marzi et al.,(2025) and PRISMA 2020, 1,323 Scopus-indexed records were retrieved; 154 formed the analytical subset, and 15 high-impact studies (PE001–PE015) underwent thematic synthesis following Thomas & Harden,(2008). Analyses used R v4.6.0 (bibliometrix, VOSviewer); quality was evaluated with MMAT 2018. Results: Annual production grew exponentially, with an inflection point in 2020 (n = 101) and a historical peak in 2025 (n = 227). Three productive hubs were identified: TPSR-USA (Wright), TPSR-Spain (Valero-Valenzuela, Manzano-Sánchez), and Sport Education-Portugal (Mesquita, Hastie). The model × outcome matrix indicated TPSR × Responsibility as the most researched pairing (n = 86) followed by SE × Engagement/Enjoyment (n = 30). The most prevalent explicit lens was Self-Determination Theory (48%), but 70% of studies operated without an explicit framework. Hybrid SE+TPSR models become a rising paradigm. 15 anchor studies (mean MMAT 11.8/14) were analyzed and four analytical themes emerged: motivational mechanisms; life-skills and responsibility learning through classroom structure; mastery climate and teacher-student relationships; and transfer-effect challenges. Conclusion Pedagogical models function as evidence-based vehicles for psychological and character development only when implemented with explicit transfer scaffolding within a need-satisfying motivational climate.

Abstract

Character refers to a set of moral values, attitudes, and behaviors that form an individual's personality and influence their actions across various situations. This study aims to analyze the contribution of physical education to character development in school students through a systematic literature review approach. The research followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses) protocol, utilizing the Covidence platform to facilitate the screening and data extraction process. Articles were retrieved from Google Scholar and Crossref databases using Harzing’s Publish or Perish application. Out of 750 initial articles, 15 met the established inclusion and exclusion criteria and were selected for systematic analysis. Thematic synthesis was applied to identify key findings across the studies. The results reveal that physical education plays a significant role in shaping students’ holistic character. Structured physical activities within the physical education curriculum can foster core values such as responsibility, cooperation, independence, discipline, tolerance, honesty, and self-confidence. The findings conclude that physical education not only supports physical development but also serves as a strategic medium for character reinforcement. This study offers important implications for curriculum development and learning practices that integrate character education through physical activities.

Abstract

The evaluation of physical fitness is a core element of sport science, clinical exercise physiology and population health surveillance but a comprehensive bibliometric synthesis of the recent global trend is missing. The present study aims to describe the productivity, intellectual structure, and thematic evolution of the research on fitness tests published between 2015 and 2026. A total of 5,766 peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Scopus database (Elsevier) were retrieved with the search string TITLE-ABS-KEY ("fitness test" OR "physical fitness test" OR "exercise test"). The articles were analysed through performance analysis and science mapping with Bibliometrix R-package (Biblioshiny), VOSviewer 1.6.20, and Microsoft Excel, following the protocol of (Aria & Cuccurullo, 2017; Donthu et al., 2021). The dataset included 92,894 citations (mean = 16.11; median = 7.00) from 1,134 source journals. The annual scientific production increased from 380 documents in 2015 to a maximum of 691 documents in 2024, with a 3-year moving average that indicates a sustained acceleration after 2020. The top contributing countries were: United States (n = 1,168), United Kingdom (n = 782), and Brazil (n = 580). Lotka’s law was confirmed (n ≈ 3.24), with a very skewed distribution of productivity; Bradford’s law identified 15 core journals, accounting for 34.1% of all output. Co-occurrence analysis of author keywords resulted in five thematic clusters: General Exercise & Fitness, Cardiorespiratory & Performance, Athletic Performance & Training, Health Aging & Body, and Methodological. Thematic evolution over three sub-periods (2015–2018, 2019–2022, 2023–2026) demonstrated a clear migration of the field from cardiorespiratory and laboratory-based assessment to wearable sensors, machine-learning-enabled monitoring and CRF risk stratification. These findings offer an empirical guide for researchers, clinicians, educators, and policymakers interested in advancing valid, scalable, and technology-integrated fitness assessment.
