Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of toxic relationships in the Indonesian web series Cinta Mati by identifying the types of toxic behaviors portrayed through scenes in each episode. The background of this research is based on the increasing phenomenon of toxic relationships among adolescents, which are frequently represented in audiovisual media, including web series widely consumed by young audiences through digital platforms. Such representations have the potential to shape adolescents’ understanding, perceptions, and attitudes toward unhealthy interpersonal relationship dynamics. This research employs a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis method, which emphasizes denotative, connotative, and myth meanings in each scene. The object of the study is the web series Cinta Mati, focusing on six episodes analyzed through observation and documentation techniques of scenes containing elements of toxic relationships. The findings reveal that there are 15 scenes across six episodes that explicitly and implicitly represent toxic relationship behaviors. The identified forms of toxic relationships include Deplecator Balittler (belittling), Bad Temper (temperamental behavior), The Guilt Inducer (creating feelings of guilt), The Overreactor (reactive behavior in maintaining the relationship), and The Possessive Toxic Controller (possessive and controlling behavior). These representations are conveyed through dialogue, facial expressions, gestures, and conflict-driven storylines that construct narratives of unhealthy relationships. This study concludes that the web series Cinta Mati portrays toxic relationships as complex relational dynamics, depicting not only verbal and emotional abuse but also the normalization of such behaviors within adolescent romantic relationships. The findings highlight the importance of media literacy among adolescents to critically understand and interpret representations of unhealthy relationships in digital content.

Abstract

The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence in higher education has generated a fundamental dilemma: does it function as a learning aid or as an academic shortcut? This study employs a qualitative systematic literature review guided by PRISMA procedures to map the ethical spectrum of generative AI use between cognitive augmentation and academic substitution. Thirty-eight core journal articles published between 2021 and 2026 were thematically synthesized. The findings indicate that generative AI can enhance learning when it supports metacognitive reflection, scaffolding, and self-regulated learning while preserving human evaluative control. Conversely, risks emerge when AI contribution replaces core cognitive labor, leading to authorship ambiguity, integrity violations, and superficial engagement. To reconcile these tensions, this study proposes a multidimensional ethical boundary framework structured along two dimensions: human cognitive engagement and level of AI contribution. This framework offers a conceptual basis for policy development, assessment redesign, and responsible pedagogical integration, positioning ethical AI use as a continuum grounded in sustained human intellectual accountability.
