Abstract

This article discusses about criticism of the argument for establishing a caliphate for Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) with analysis of hadith in the interpretation of bi ar-riwāyah. The Khilafah aims to enforce Islamic law. There are several groups or mass organizations that are trying to implement the caliphate. One group in Indonesia is Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia. They are of the opinion that any state system cannot be accepted or even called infidel if it is not based on the Koran and Hadith. There is a lot of research on the caliphate, such as discussing the caliphate historically, or referring to classical and contemporary tafsir books. Likewise with the discussion of takhrīj, quite a few studies discuss takhrīj or hadith analysis. In this study, researchers analyzed the hadiths in the tafsir bi ar-riwāyah or more precisely Tafsīr Al-Qur`Ān Al-‘Aẓīm by Ibn Abī Ḥātim. This research is limited to verses that are understood as arguments for upholding the concept of the caliphate, namely QS. Āli ‘Imrān [3]: 110, QS. al-Mā`idah [5]: 44 and QS. al-Mā`idah [5]: 48. This research is “Library Research” using qualitative methods. The approach used is the takhrīj hadith approach. In the analysis of takhrīj hadith, the author starts by bringing in hadith from other sources if there are other sources. Then the writer examines the narrators of the sanad (criticism of sanad) and explains the meaning of the hadith (syarh hadith) along with the law (quality) of the sanad. From this research, we can find out the source and quality of the hadiths as well as explanations of these hadiths, so that there is no mistake in understanding the hadith text. After research, there were several narrations (sanad) that were invalid because there were problematic narrators. Of the 8 historical texts, 5 of them have the quality of sanad daīf and the remaining 3 are ḥasan. Of the various words of the caliphate in the Koran, there is no word that discusses and requires the caliphate. Key words: Khilafah, Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, Tafsir Ibn Abī Ḥātim.

Abstract

This article presents a critical examination of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia's (HTI) argument for establishing a caliphate by analyzing relevant hadiths within the framework of tafsīr bi ar-riwāyah, specifically from Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm by Ibn Abī Ḥātim. HTI advocates for a political system based solely on the Qur’an and Hadith, rejecting other state systems as un-Islamic or even infidel. While previous studies on the caliphate often focus on historical perspectives or classical and contemporary tafsir literature, this study narrows its focus to the takhrīj (hadith authentication) of narrations used to support caliphate claims. The research employs a qualitative library-based method, utilizing a hadith takhrīj approach. It investigates three key verses commonly cited in caliphate discourse: QS. Āli ʿImrān [3]:110, QS. al-Māʾidah [5]:44, and QS. al-Māʾidah [5]:48. Hadiths linked to these verses are traced, their chains of transmission (sanad) examined, and their meanings (syarḥ) interpreted. Each narration’s authenticity is evaluated through sanad criticism, highlighting the reliability or weakness of the narrators. The findings reveal that out of eight hadiths analyzed, five are classified as ḍaʿīf (weak) and three as ḥasan (acceptable). Some narrations were deemed invalid due to problematic transmitters. Importantly, while the Qur’an mentions concepts such as khilāfah or khalīfah, none of the cited verses explicitly command the establishment of a caliphate as proposed by HTI. The study thus urges caution in employing weak or misinterpreted hadiths as foundational arguments for political ideologies.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji konsep Al-Wujūh wa An-Naẓā’ir dalam tafsir modern, khususnya dalam kitab Tafsir al-Wasīţ li Al-Qur`ān al-Karīm karya Sayyid Ţanţāwi. Al-Wujūh wa An-Naẓā’ir merujuk pada kata-kata dalam Al-Qur'an yang memiliki berbagai makna tergantung pada konteksnya. Konsep ini sangat penting karena membantu memahami keragaman makna kata-kata dalam Al-Qur'an, memberikan dimensi yang lebih dalam dan kaya terhadap pemahaman teks suci. Sayyid Ţanţāwi memberikan perhatian khusus pada lafaz zikir, doa, dan shalat dalam tafsirnya. Zikir dijelaskan sebagai pengingatan kepada Allah yang tidak hanya bersifat teologis, tetapi juga mencakup aspek moral dan sosial. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis penafsiran Sayyid Ţanţāwi serta relevansi dalam al-wasīţ ditinjau dari segi al-Wujūh wa an-Naẓā`ir pada makna lafaz zikir, doa, shalat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif berbasis riset kepustakaan dengan pendekatan deskriptif-analitis. Kitab Tafsir al-Wasīţ menjadi sumber utama yang kemudian dikomparasikan dengan literatur tafsir lainnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penafsiran Sayyid Ţanţāwi atas zikir, doa, dan shalat memberikan pemahaman yang lebih komprehensif mengenai peran ketiga kata tersebut dalam membentuk kehidupan spiritual dan sosial seorang Muslim. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menegaskan pentingnya memahami Al-Wujūh wa An-Naẓā’ir dalam rangka menafsirkan Al-Qur’an secara mendalam, dan konsep tersebut relevan dengan kebutuhan umat Muslim dalam memahami makna-makna Al-Qur’an di zaman modern.

Abstract

Diversity is an inevitability that cannot be avoided. It is a sunnatullah that should be done without consent. When diversity is combined with various assumptions of truth, an intolerant attitude arises. This problem is caused by a misunderstanding of the message of religious tolerance, which causes its adherents to appear with different faces. Therefore, the Qur'an explains what tolerance really is in Islamic teachings. Based on this problem, the researcher is interested in conducting a comparative analysis of how the interpretations of Hamka and Ali As-Ṣabūnī are related to religious tolerance, as well as the strengthening of the socio-historical background of both of them towards this interpretation. This study uses a qualitative approach with a comparative study method. Data collection consists of literature studies and observations. Descriptive analysis is used in the comparative analysis method. Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism theory is one of the theories used to strengthen research as a surgical tool. This theory explains that a work or text is the work of its own author, along with the historical reality that conditions the emergence of the work or text. To improve the analysis of this research, discussions of scholars and interpreters of the verses of the Qur'an related to religious tolerance are also used. Research shows that Hamka and Ali As-Ṣabūnī generally agree that coercion in embracing religion is not allowed. However, Hamka directs the meaning of religious tolerance with the applicable conditions and limitations. This study also refers to the theory of genetic structure which states that the tendency of general and specific interpretations of poems on religious tolerance cannot be separated from the socio-historical context of each community in which the two figures lived. This assumption is that the works of the two figures are not only personal works, but also the works of their respective communities and the social and historical realities of their respective times.

Abstract

This study investigates the process of vernacularization in the Gorontalo language translation of the Qur’an published by the Gorontalo Regional Government. Situated within the broader academic debate on postcolonial and decolonial Islamic hermeneutics, the research addresses how local languages and cultural frameworks participate in shaping religious meaning and resisting Arab-centric epistemic authority. Employing a qualitative methodology with a library research approach, the study utilizes descriptive analysis to examine textual elements in the translation. The findings reveal three major categories of local cultural integration: (1) lexical absorption—Arabic-derived terms adapted into Gorontalo, such as na'ale, aba/baaba, helidu, and sap; (2) linguistic politeness—refined expressions like waatia, yo'i, ti, and te that reflect local norms of respect; and (3) cultural expressions—idioms and metaphors such as Tabia, Ta ilahula, and Dulahu momooli, which encode Gorontalo cosmology and spiritual values. Theoretically, this research contributes to the discourse on vernacular Qur’anic interpretation by demonstrating that translation is a culturally embedded and ideologically charged act. It affirms the significance of local hermeneutics in constructing religious knowledge and challenges epistemic centralization by legitimizing vernacular voices within Islamic interpretive traditions.

Abstract

This study examines the relevance of the concept of mindfulness in the Qur’an to the phenomenon of quarter-life crisis experienced by young Muslims aged 18-29 years. Quarter-life crisis is characterized by anxiety, confusion, and restlessness related to life goals, identity, and personal achievement. Using the thematic interpretation analysis method, this study examines five pairs of Qur’anic mindfulness concepts related to the symptoms of quarter-life crisis: al-murāqabah with al-khauf, at-taqwā with aḍ-ḍaiq, aż-żikr with al-ḥuzn, al-khusyū’ with al-halū’, and at-tawakkal with aḍ-ḍaiq. The findings show that the five pairs of concepts are integrated in a holistic approach based on al-iḥsān that harmonizes the dimensions of insāniyyah (humanity), rūḥāniyyah (spirituality), and rabbāniyyah (divinity). The novelty of this research lies in the development of a Qur’anic mindfulness framework that not only offers practical strategies for managing psychological symptoms of quarter-life crisis, but also provides a transformative spiritual dimension. Based on the research results, the Qur’anic mindfulness approach centered on al-iḥsān has the potential to shift the crisis phase of the young generation into a valuable spiritual development momentum, and contributes to integrating Islamic spiritual values ​​with the latest developmental psychology studies.

Abstract

The interpretation of the Qur'an is a crucial element in understanding the meaning and message of its verses. However, in practice, differences in interpretation, or al-ikhtilaf fi at-tafsir, often occur among both early (salaf) and later (khalaf) scholars, and have existed even since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Al-ikhtilaf fi at-tafsir is divided into two main types: Disagreement that is reducible to a single meaning and Disagreement that is based on multiple meanings, each with its own forms and characteristics. This study uses a library research method and is qualitative in nature. The author found that As-Sa'di's method in interpreting verses containing al-ikhtilaf involves three approaches: not explaining the existence of a difference and choosing the opinion he deems correct; mentioning the difference without choosing one of the opinions; and explaining the difference, then selecting the opinion he deems correct. Meanwhile, Quraish Shihab uses two approaches: explaining the existence of a difference without choosing one of the opinions, and selecting the opinion he deems correct.

Abstract

In general, this article describes the textual approach which has been considered as a counter-productive entity in understanding the Qur’an. This is because the ‘textuality of interpretation’ that has been carried by certain religious groups offers one concept: ‘one side truth claim’, unilateral truth. In this textual lens the interpretation of certain verse in the Qur’an looks very rigid, even touching the realm of extremism, both hard exxtrimsm (phsyical violence) and sof extremism (verbal or disourse violence). The vocabulary of Shirk, hypocrite, infidel is very familiar to hear from approaches that rely only on this textia; dimension. Resonance of these kinds of stimas is not only to respond to practices that are not agreed upon; but also to respond to national and state issues. The context of this kind of approach is of course very incompatible i fit has to be brought and applied to Indonesia’s climate which has a plural face. Therefore, as the anti-thesis of this group, there is also a group that offers a contextual approach to understanding Qur’an. the contextual approach is deemed appropriate and suitable considering the spirit contained in the Qur’an is ‘shalih likulli zaman wa makan’, relevant to every time and place. Therefore approaching the Qur’an with the spirit of its time cannot bi avoided, it is even felt to be very crusial, especially for religious communities. A person’s face or way of religion really depends on how he understand the basic sources of his teaching; Qur’an. Therefore, this research will further elaborate on these two approaches, especially, the textual approach in order to find out how relevant and what influences it has. To achive this, this research utilize the method of library research with a desriprive-analytical-crytical approach as an instrument to find objective data in viewing this reality.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of amṡāl muṣarraḥah in Surat Al-Baqarah [2]:17-18 and its resulting implications on the meaning of lexical, dictional and stylistic selection of lafadz. The research method used is analytic descriptive qualitative with the approach used linguistic approaches and history. The conclusion of this study is, first: Lafadz in the amṡāl muṣarraḥah of the Qur'an has a very important role in knowing the interpretation in general. Second: there is a strong relationship between the choice of words in diction and the resulting meaning so as to produce a beautiful and fluent style that is impossible to represent by other words lexically. Third: stilistics in amṡāl are divided into two in lafadz or expression (style), both of which have implications on the aspect of meaning that will be produced so as to facilitate a reader in understanding it, obeying it and practicing it as desired by Allāh subhānahū wata'āla.
