Abstract

Institutions as social control always succeed in regulating so that the social life of citizens can run in an orderly and smooth manner in accordance with prevailing traditions and norms. As has been functioning well in the past, both in Aceh and West Sumatra. Aceh with its gampong pageu, and West Sumatra with surau. Both reflect a blend of local wisdom (adat) and Islamic values in it. However, if you see the rampant cases of violence and sexual abuse that have occurred in women and children lately, it is not wrong to say that the role of institutions as social control began to weaken. Like the role of surau and gampong pageu which is slowly ignored and forgotten. Re-empowering social institutions means trying to restore the pattern of community behavior based on existing norms. For this reason, systematic efforts are needed in empowering social institutions by empowering social institutions in accordance with the changes and demands of the times.

Abstract

This paper aims to reconstruct the image of a just society towards the application of Islamic law in Aceh in various existing regulations, both qanuns, regulations, instructions and appeals. So far, mage has been built through unbalanced research, especially those carried out by supporters of gender equality and human rights in their various studies which always state that women are restrained, marginalized and not given sufficient space in the domestic and public spheres. The research that has been exposed so far has only seen the views of feminists, gender and human rights observers, while academics, ulama, policy makers (executive-legislative) and women "victims" have not been touched by these studies. This is where the importance of this research is to see how the views and opinions of academics, scholars, policy makers (executive-legislative) and women "victims" of the Regulations for the Implementation of Islamic Shari'a in 3 districts/cities in Aceh, namely Aceh Barat, Bireun and City of Lhokseumawe, are important which has issued regulations, instructions and appeals that seem to have a specific object towards women. This field research research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observation, interviews and document review which are then refined by data analysis. This study found that academics, ulama, policy makers (executive-legislative) and women "victims" have different views on the image of Islamic Shari'a in Aceh which has been built from the perspective of supporting gender equality and human rights. It is as if these regulations are acts of discrimination against women, even though they are concrete efforts to protect women. However, there are still many applications in the field, both regarding enforcement procedures and socialization that need to be considered. For this reason, continuous and comprehensive socialization by involving bureaucrats, academics, scholars, community leaders and women through formal and non-formal education channels, Friday pulpits, study groups in ta'lim assemblies, family education and official government channels, such as raids and other preventive measures.

Kasab or kasab cloth, is a traditional textile embroidered with various types of local motifs in Keude Blang Village, Seunagan Timur District, Nagan Raya Regency, Aceh. However, the cultural richness of this society has never been scientifically researched. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out the types of motifs and the preservation of objects by the community and local government in that area. This is qualitative research, data collection involved observation, interviewing, and documentation. The results showed that kasab is one of the traditions for embroidering motifs on traditional textile surfaces. The use of gold thread in the components of traditional ceremonies not only provides aesthetic value, but also complements the meaning conveyed through symbols as a medium of public communication. The kasab motifs that are always embroidered in the Keude Blang Ara Village community include the bungong uret, bungong meulu, bungong pucuk pakis, and pucuk rembong (bamboo flower) motifs. Kasab preservation in Keude Blang Ara Village continues to be carried out by the local community and supported by the government. Preserving local culture (kasab) involves creating dynamic expressions and adapting to changing developmental situations to preserve cultural, artistic, and traditional qualities. However, with the support of the government, kasab has become something interesting, so that nowadays the demand for producing kasab is increasing.

Abstract

Ulama are people who are pious and have an important and strategic position in the historical trajectory of the people of Aceh. Every generation needs scholars as protectors and guides for the community in various aspects of life, especially in the field of religion, so it is necessary to have successors who will continue this role in each generation. And theoretically, the children of these scholars are seen as having a chance to continue this continuity. In the early decades of the 21st century in Seunagan District, Nagan Raya Regency, there were seven well-known scholars and they had 18 sons who were considered able to continue their father's roles in the past. However, in this study only 5 people (27.70%) were found to be scholars, while 13 people (62.30%) did not become scholars. This is caused by several factors; including family factors, education and environmental factors.

Abstract

Our study portrays burial rituals practiced by Aceh Province, Indonesia, as this ethnic group has distinctive traditions for burying deceased members of society due to the intertwining of cultures and religions in Aceh. The intertwining of the Islamic tenet with the local cultures has constructed the burial rituals in Aceh differently from any Islamic community in Indonesia. To discover the ritual’s distinction as this study’s focus, we explored three aspects of the rituals: processes, meanings, and implications. We integrated a qualitative approach through an ethnographic study by observing three burial rituals and interviewing 45 informants across the province. As a result, the processes covered initial meetings, grave cleansing, ceremonious announcement, feast, and pilgrimage. Regarding the ritual’s meanings, we revealed that the Acehnese people practiced the burial rituals to expect God’s blessing and forgiveness for the deceased, represent gratitude and homage toward the left family, affirm the local customs, and consolidate kinship relations. A for the implication, the series of rituals in burying a dead person in Aceh serves as a way to establish a vertical relationship from people to God, along with a horizontal relationship, from person to person, which contains local wisdom representing the identity of Aceh. The urgency of burial rituals reflects communities’ harmony and adherence to cultural and religious beliefs regardless of any condition.
