Abstract

Fundamental movement skills (FMS) and learning motivation are essential for children’s physical development and participation in physical activity. However, many elementary school students demonstrate low motor competence and limited engagement in physical education due to conventional instructional approaches that are often repetitive and less interactive. Augmented Reality (AR) technology has emerged as a promising tool to enhance learning experiences and increase student motivation. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of AR-based athletics learning on FMS and learning motivation among elementary school students. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed involving 60 students aged 9–11 years. Participants were assigned to either an experimental group receiving AR-based athletics instruction or a control group receiving conventional instruction. The intervention was conducted over eight weeks. FMS were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 (TGMD-3), while learning motivation was measured using a validated questionnaire. Data were analyzed using paired-sample and independent-sample t-tests and Cohen’s d effect size analysis. The results showed significant improvements in both FMS and motivation among students in the experimental group. FMS scores increased from 61.47 ± 6.28 to 78.53 ± 5.91, while motivation scores increased from 63.84 ± 5.74 to 82.15 ± 5.38 (p < 0.001). Large effect sizes were observed for FMS (d = 1.42) and motivation (d = 1.58). These findings indicate that AR-based athletics learning is an effective and innovative strategy for improving motor skills and learning motivation in physical education.

Abstract

The effects of sexual activity and masturbation before exercise or competition on athletic performance remain unclear. This systematic review examined their short and long-term effects on physical performance and physiological responses, proposed underlying mechanisms, and methodological limitations in the existing literature. A systematic search of the Scopus database was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, identifying 281 records. Following title and abstract screening and application of predefined eligibility criteria, 50 articles were included in the review. Of these, 10 directly investigated the relationship between sexual activity or masturbation and athletic performance. The relevant evidence was synthesized thematically using Braun and Clarke’s framework. A meta-analysis was not performed because of substantial heterogeneity in study outcomes and measures. Overall, sexual activity or masturbation performed more than two hours before exercise or competition did not appear to significantly affect strength, endurance, physical performance, or reaction time. Findings for shorter intervals were inconsistent. Psychological readiness and sleep quality may influence performance, while testosterone fluctuations, autonomic arousal, and perceived exertion were the most frequently proposed physiological mechanisms. However, small sample sizes, reliance on self-reported data, and inconsistent definitions of sexual activity limited the interpretation of causal relationships. Current evidence does not support strict abstinence from sexual activity or masturbation before competition. Individualized, evidence-based recommendations may be more appropriate for athletes. Further research using larger and more diverse samples, standardized definitions, objective measurements, and rigorous study designs is needed to clarify the relationship across different sports and levels of competition.

Abstract

This comprehensive literature review, spanning from 2020 to 2026, explores the profound impact of coach communication on athletes' psychological states and performance across the three temporal phases of competition: pre-competition, in-competition, and post-competition. Utilizing the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and drawing from the Scopus database, the review meticulously analyzed 50 high-quality studies to bridge the gap between sport psychology, coaching science, and communication research. The thematic analysis revealed that verbal and non-verbal communication, precise and timely feedback, confirmation messages, and structure-giving strategies are consistently linked to enhanced athlete self-esteem, perceived capability, and drive, while effectively reducing competition-related anxiety. Moreover, overall communication quality directly influences team cohesion and objective performance outcomes. However, the effectiveness of these interactions varies depending on critical contextual factors, such as the specific stage of competition, the athlete's developmental level, the type of sport, and the strength of the coach-athlete partnership. Notably, post-competition feedback emerged as a vital component for athlete learning and burnout prevention. From a theoretical standpoint, these findings extend both general communication theory and the relation-inferred self-efficacy framework into competitive sports contexts. Practically, the review provides an evidence-based foundation for coaches to fine-tune the content and timing of their messaging according to the exact competition phase. Finally, the authors recommend that future research prioritize longitudinal study designs, cross-cultural comparisons, and standardized measurement tools to better establish causal relationships in sports communication.
