Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus, a leading pathogen in various human infections, can colonize different anatomical sites asymptomatically, posing risks to immunocompromised individuals. This study aims to determine the prevalence of asymptomatic nasal carriage of S. aureus among pre-clinical medical students. Nasal swab samples were collected from 57 medical students on two occasions, ten months apart, and S. aureus was identified by culture method. S. aureus nasal carriage was found in 10 (17%) participants. Nearly all participants (98%) had more than one bacterial type on nasal swab, with only 1 (2%) showing S. aureus as the sole bacterium. Among the isolated S. aureus, 1 (10%) was Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Among the 37 individuals who participated in both samplings, S. aureus was detected at least once in the nasal swabs of 18 individuals (49%): 13 participants (35%) were intermittent carriers, and 5 participants (14%) were persistent carriers. Our study reveals that a significant number of pre-clinical medical students are asymptomatic carriers of S. aureus in their nasal passages, either intermittently or persistently. As they transition into healthcare roles, these carriers may act as reservoirs for transmission of this bacteria within healthcare settings.

Abstract

The Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) is a simple parameter, however, its sensitivity as a mortality predictor is low. This study aimed to improve the predictor performance of qSOFA for in-hospital mortality. This study was a retrospective single-centered cohort using medical record data. This study included 150 patients aged 18-80 years old, who experienced sepsis and received ICU care between September 2021 and August 2022. qSOFA and modified ROX index (mROX) were calculated based on the most severe condition recorded in the emergency department (ED). Each variable's area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, sensitivity, and specificity were compared to predict in-hospital mortality. qSOFA scores ≥2 and mROX values ≤3.20 were independent factors that increased the risk of in-hospital mortality (OR 3.69 and 21.50; p 0.004 and 0.005, respectively). The combination of qSOFA scores ≥2 and mROX value ≤3.20 as in-hospital mortality predictors resulted in AUROC 0.791 with a sensitivity of 71.7% and specificity of 75.7%. The AUROC, sensitivity, and specificity of the combination of qSOFA and mROX were higher than qSOFA (0.766, 70.8%, 70.3%) or mROX (0.760, 68.1%, 67.6%) alone. In conclusion, the combination of qSOFA scores ≥2 and mROX values ≤3.20 increase the sensitivity and specificity for predicting in-hospital mortality in sepsis patients.

Abstract

Knowledge of blood types and blood transfusion is crucial in daily life. Knowing one’s own blood type is important because it can provide necessary information for blood transfusions for patients who are in critical need of blood. Biology teachers need to strengthen their understanding of the concepts to ensure they have sufficient scientific knowledge and avoid misconceptions when teaching biology topics to students. There have not been many concept strengthening activities between teachers and the Faculty of Medicine. The goal of this community service is to deepen the understanding of blood types and blood transfusion concepts among biology teachers in the Ciputra group. The participants in this activity are biology teachers from the Ciputra group. The activity was held on October 17, 2024, via Zoom. The equipment used for this activity includes laptops connected to Wi-Fi, Google Drive for storing PowerPoint (PPT) materials and videos, and Google Forms for pre-tests and post-tests. The material that was deepened in this session is blood types and blood transfusion. The results of the pre-test and post-test were analyzed descriptively. The results show that the school fully supported this learning activity. The speaker for this activity was a clinical pathology specialist and lecturer. The results of the activity indicate a slight improvement in the average scores of the pre-test and post-test. Overall, the activity ran according to plan. The material should be repeated, but presented with a different learning method. Further deepening of medical biology material should continue with other topics. Teachers need to adapt to the level of medical material and should engage in self-learning before the activity begins.

Abstract
