Abstract

Black rice production in organic farming system does not meet the demand of local customers because of its low productivity. This research aimed to set an interaction model using multivariate analysis via smartPLS to identify environmental factors which simultaneously affects the growth of black rice. The growth of black rice in two irrigated organic paddy field in Malang, Indonesia was observed during planting period from November 2011 to March 2012. In each rice field, the growth was periodically recorded during planting periods: 19-29 days after planting (dap), 41-45 dap, 62-66 dap, 77-81 dap, 90-94 dap and 104-106 dap. Environmental factors such as water quantities, soil conditions, weed communities and cultivation system around the black rice population were also measured. Black rice growth was influenced simultaneously by water quantities, soil, weed communities and cultivating systems with predictive-relevance value reaching 92.83%. Based on the model, water quantities in paddy field is a key factor which directly and indirectly determined the growth and productivity of black rice. Keywords:  black rice growth, environmental factors, interaction model, organic paddy field

Abstract

This research is aimed to study the growth adaptation of two Indonesian black rice NTT in origin which is cultivating in organic paddy field in Malang - East Java and its problems during a planting period. A descriptive exploratory research was conducted in two organic rice fields in Kepanjen District, Malang Regency. Those fields were grown with two different varieties of black rice NTT in origin namely, Laka and Woja Laka. Each rice field was recorded periodically. The growth was including the plant height, biomass, density of tiller, panicle and spikes, dry seed weight and the problem correlated to pest and climates limitation. The results showed that Woja Laka and Laka black rice varieties slightly gave a different growth pattern. Laka variety was taller than Woja Laka, i.e. the Laka could reach 200 cm of height, while the Woja Laka was maximum 150 cm of height. However, the density of Woja Laka tiller and its panicle were almost double than the Laka ones. The dry seed weight and spikes number of Woja Laka were much higher than in Laka ones. In terms of organic farming system, Laka rice seemed to be more sensitive towards the strong wind conditions and bird or rat attacks rather than Woja Laka. Both pests attacked on both black rice along growing period, but rat preferred to attack vegetative part, otherwise bird strongly disturbed during generative period. Key words: black rice, growth, Laka, Woja Laka, organic paddy field

Abstract

Variations in altitude create significant differences in environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and nutrient availability, which profoundly affect the structure of vegetation and insect communities. These variations influence biodiversity levels and the patterns of interactions between vegetation and insects within ecosystems. Therefore, this descriptive exploratory study was conducted to analyze the diversity of ground-dwelling insect communities and the structure of ground cover vegetation in Gedagai Putih rice fields across different altitudinal gradients. Insect sampling was carried out using the pitfall trap method, while vegetation observations were conducted using 60 cm x 80 cm plots. The results of the study indicate that altitudinal variations significantly influence the composition and dominance of insect and ground cover vegetation species. The highest dominance level of insect Genus was observed for Entomobrya (IVI = 67.48) in Zone III (300 m a.s.l), while the lowest dominance was recorded for Alydus and Leptocorisa (IVI = 1.55) in Zone I (108 m a.s.l). For plant species, the highest dominance was observed in Paspalum conjugatum (IVI = 133), while the lowest dominance was recorded for Alocasia sp (IVI = 7) in Zone I.

Abstract

The Tagur Tinggi Waterfall region is characterized by its verdant and expansive landscape, featuring diverse flora such as trees and grass. This region is optimal for arboreal insects as a habitat. Arboreal insects, which are abundant and readily seen, inhabit the upper branches of trees and travel between trees to facilitate pollination. The abundance of arboreal insects serves as a reliable measure of the overall well-being of an ecosystem. The present study aims to identify the various species of insects that inhabit the trees in the Tagur Tinggi region and calculate the diversity, evenness, and dominance measures for these arboreal insects. This study used the transect approach, wherein samples are gathered bi-daily in the morning and evening. There were a total of 44 bug species belonging to 19 different families and 8 distinct orders. The arboreal insect diversity index (H') was measured to be 3.24 in the morning and 3.14 in the afternoon. Arboreal insects have an evenness index (E) of 0.91 during the morning and 0.87 during the afternoon. Additionally, they have a dominance index (D) of 0.044 in the morning and 0.056 in the afternoon. According to the health index values obtained, it can be inferred that the Tagur Tinggi Waterfall area in Lempake Samarida Village is highly conducive to the survival of arboreal insects. This is due to the well-preserved habitat and abundant vegetation structure that supports the life of arboreal insects.

Abstract

Understanding arboreal insect communities, especially their role as herbivores, predators, and pollinators, is needed to manage rainfed paddy fields sustainably. Therefore, this descriptive exploratory research was conducted on rainfed paddy fields in Kutai Kartanegara to determine the community structure and diversity of arboreal insects collected by sweeping net method for diurnal insects and light traps for nocturnal insects. Based on the value of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H), Simpson dominance index (D), and uniformity index (1-D), the rainfed paddy field ecosystem in Kutai Kartanegara is relatively stable with the co-dominance of several arboreal insect species belonging to the genera Apis, Leptocorisa, Orthetrum, Eurema, and Melanoplus. Orthetum can potentially be a natural enemy in these rainfed paddy agroecosystems.
