Abstract

The results of the PISA 2022 assessment, along with preliminary studies conducted in West Sulawesi, indicate that students' proficiency in mathematics remains significantly below expectations. One of the factors contributing to students' limited proficiency in mathematics is associated with the pedagogical competence of their instructors. This study employs a quantitative research design utilizing a survey instrument to describe the level of pedagogical competence of mathematics teachers in secondary schools in West Sulawesi, based on student perceptions, and to identify the specific competencies that require development. The population of this study was all secondary school students in West Sulawesi, with a sample size of 1.051 senior secondary school students and 988 junior secondary school students. The analysis employed was descriptive statistical analysis using a stratified random sampling method. The findings indicate that a considerable proportion of mathematics teachers at both the junior high school and senior high school levels exhibit inadequate proficiency. The pedagogical competence of teachers is still lacking in several key areas, which require further development: (1) The skill to comprehend student characteristics; (2) The capability to select materials that are aligned with the learning experience and learning objectives; (3) The ability to select media and learning resources that are suitable for student needs; (4) The skill to make transactional decisions in response to situations that arise in the classroom; (5) The ability to integrate and utilize technology in learning; (6) The skill to communicate effectively; and (7) The skill to evaluate learning. The results of this study can be used as a guideline for the government, experts, and policymakers to overcome the problem of teacher competency development. In addition, the results can be used to design and determine the direction of policies and programs for developing mathematics teacher pedagogical competencies in West Sulawesi.

Abstract

The palm oil industry is the largest economic supporter for the Indonesian economy from the agricultural sector. Behind the success story of this activity, there are environmental consequences regarding the decline in land quality as a result of improper land management. To study the effect of oil palm plantation management on soil fertility, a study was conducted in three locations, Dharmasraya Regency (Kanhapludult), South Solok (Dystrudepts) and South Coast (Haplohemists) in West Sumatra. Research data were collected from 2017 to 2022 respectively, and analyzed. The results showed that soils from Dharmasraya (DM) and South Solok (SS) experienced a decrease in pH value during the study period, while opposite results were found at the PS location. Total Carbon (C) and Nitrogen (N) content at the DM and SS locations were found to be similar, while at the PS location these parameters were much higher because the soil came from organic matter. Comparable results were also found for KTK, where the DM and SS research locations were lower compared to the PS location. The content of macro nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) in the soil describes the PS location much better compared to DM and SS. Because the PS location is organic soil, the higher nutrient content can be harmful to the environment because it can easily leak into water bodies which can trigger eutrophication

Abstract

The main triggering factor for landslides is high rainfall intensity, especially during the rainy season. Excessive rainfall can cause an increase in water content in the soil, which in turn will reduce the shear strength of the soil and increase the volume weight of the soil. The method used is a laboratory experiment by taking samples from the field. The sample of this study was sandy clay soil taken from a landslide-prone area located in Talamau District, West Pasaman Regency. Based on the results of soil geotechnical laboratory tests in the landslide-prone zone in Talamau District, West Pasaman Regency, it can be concluded that the soil sample has moderate plasticity characteristics with a Liquid Limit of 59.39%, Plastic Limit of 49.77%, and Plasticity Index of 9.62%. The soil reaches a maximum dry density of 1.37 gr/cm³ at an optimum water content of 500 ml, with a grain size distribution dominated by the sand fraction (83.978% retained on sieve No. 4-20) and a very low fine material content (1.234%). The results of the triaxial test showed soil behavior that varied from brittle to strain-hardening depending on the level of cell stress. Overall, the soil can be classified as well-graded sand with good drainage but low cohesion, thus requiring additional stabilization for construction applications in landslide-prone areas.
