Abstract

Introductory Physics plays a fundamental role in Geological Engineering education, as it supports the modeling of dynamic and multidimensional Earth system phenomena. Nevertheless, the course is often perceived as challenging due to the complex integration of conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, and multiple representations. This study aims to analyze patterns of academic achievement in Introductory Physics among Geological Engineering students and to explore potential gender-based differences. A descriptive quantitative design with an exploratory comparative approach was employed involving 24 students enrolled in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were derived from Midterm Examination scores covering quantities and measurement, kinematics, dynamics, and work–energy. Descriptive analysis revealed a moderate level of overall achievement (63.1%) with substantial variability across students. Dynamics and Work–Energy emerged as the most challenging topics compared to quantities and measurement. These findings are associated with high intrinsic cognitive load and substantial spatial reasoning demands required in these domains. Comparative analysis indicated a statistically significant gender difference (p 0.05) with a large effect size, although the finding remains context-specific. The results underscore the need for strengthened representational scaffolding, improved conceptual integration of energy principles, and explicit spatial reasoning support in Introductory Physics curricula for geoscience education.

Abstract

Huluduotamo Village is developing Lake Perintis as a culture-based educational tourist attraction, but the local toponymic narrative is still predominantly oral, undocumented, and not yet integrated into the visitor experience. The Thematic Community Service Programme (April–June 2025) aims to explore and document the toponymy of Lake Perintis, strengthen the storytelling skills of residents, and provide digital interpretation media to support the preservation of cultural identity. The activities use a participatory-educational approach involving 32 participants (village government, traditional leaders, youth, community, and academics) through initial observation, perception/knowledge surveys, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) for narrative validation, interpretation content production, and dissemination. The programme produced (1) agreed cultural narratives from the FGD, (2) a destination interpretation content package combining historical/toponymic narratives, maps of important points, and visitor ethics, and (3) three QR codes installed at strategic points around the lake. Pre- and post-evaluations of participants showed an increase in understanding of toponymy and the importance of cultural preservation, accompanied by strengthened community participation in maintaining the cleanliness and environment of the destination. The integration of toponymy, storytelling, and QR codes enriches the learning experience of tourists while strengthening local cultural identity, making it a relevant strategy for sustainable educational tourism development in Huluduotamo Village.
