Abstract

Abstract

Early childhood represents a critical developmental stage in which family care and parenting play a fundamental role in shaping children’s health and growth outcomes. In coastal communities, socioeconomic challenges, limited parental supervision, and constrained educational access may influence parenting practices and, consequently, children’s physical growth. To identify the dominant parenting style among coastal families in Semarang City and analyse its association with toddlers’ physical growth. This quantitative cross-sectional study involved 371 families with toddlers aged 1–5 years living in North Semarang District, a coastal area of Semarang City. Samples were selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a validated parenting style questionnaire based on Baumrind’s theory and anthropometric measurements following WHO Child Growth Standards. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test (p < 0.05). The permissive parenting style was the most dominant (49.9%), followed by authoritarian (27.5%) and authoritative/democratic (22.6%). Most toddlers (68.2%) showed normal growth, while 31.8% experienced problems such as underweight, stunting, or wasting. A significant association was found between parenting style and toddlers’ physical growth (χ² = 13.21; p = 0.001). Children raised with an authoritative (democratic) style had the highest proportion of normal growth (82.1%). Permissive parenting predominates among coastal families, reflecting socioeconomic constraints and limited parental involvement. Parenting style significantly affects child growth; thus, family-based interventions promoting structured and responsive parenting are essential to prevent growth problems in vulnerable coastal communities.

Abstract

Psychological distress, particularly anxiety, is common among elderly individuals with hypertension and may negatively affect their quality of life and disease management. This study aimed to examine changes in anxiety levels following Mindfulness Butterfly Hug Therapy among hypertensive elderly individuals. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted involving 97 elderly participants with hypertension from a community health center in Semarang, Indonesia. Participants received Mindfulness Butterfly Hug Therapy for 15 minutes over three consecutive days. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests. The results demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in anxiety scores, with mean HARS scores decreasing from 31.94 before the intervention to 16.53 after the intervention (mean difference = 15.41, p = 0.001). Most participants shifted from higher levels of anxiety to mild or no anxiety following the intervention. These findings suggest that Mindfulness Butterfly Hug Therapy may be associated with reduced anxiety levels among hypertensive elderly individuals and may serve as a practical non-pharmacological approach in community healthcare settings. However, due to the use of a one-group pretest-posttest design without a comparison group, causal conclusions cannot be drawn. Further controlled studies are warranted to confirm these findings and assess long-term outcomes.

Abstract

Early childhood development remains a major public health concern in Indonesian coastal communities, where socioeconomic vulnerability and suboptimal parenting practices may adversely affect developmental outcomes. This study examined the association between parenting styles and early childhood development among toddlers in coastal communities of Semarang, Indonesia, using a convergent mixed-methods design. A total of 371 mothers with children aged 12–59 months were selected through stratified random sampling from nine coastal villages within the Bandarharjo Primary Health Center catchment area. Quantitative data were collected using the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire and the Indonesian Pre-Screening Developmental Questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews with mothers, health cadres, midwives, and community leaders. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and logistic regression, whereas qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Democratic parenting was the predominant parenting style (57.7%), and 72.0% of toddlers demonstrated age-appropriate development. Parenting style was significantly associated with child development (p < 0.001; Cramer's V = 0.27). Logistic regression showed that democratic parenting was associated with better developmental outcomes (OR = 2.94; 95% CI: 1.61–5.37; p < 0.001). Qualitative findings revealed that fragmented caregiving, parental workload, limited developmental literacy, and reliance on digital devices as caregiving substitutes influenced parenting practices and child development. These findings highlight the importance of promoting democratic parenting while addressing socioeconomic and contextual barriers to improve developmental outcomes among children in vulnerable coastal communities.
