Abstract

Dental caries is an infectious disease resulting from the demineralization of enamel and dentin, closely linked to the consumption of cariogenic foods. Typically, children entering school age face a heightened risk of caries due to their inclination toward snacking on sweet foods and drinks. The implementation of Dental Health Education (DHE) plays a crucial role in enhancing students' comprehension of dental and oral health. Specifically, educating children on proper teeth-brushing techniques should include practical examples and applicable methods. This study aims to assess the impact of dental health education on the behavior and fecal index of students at SDN Mesjid Lheu in Aceh Besar District. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research follows a control group equivalent to pre-test and post-test. The total population of 60 children was divided into two groups: the intervention group and the control group. Quantitative data analysis involved the paired sample t-test and the independent t-test. Significant differences were observed in the mean values of knowledge, attitudes, and actions, as well as the OHI-S scores immediately after and one month following the intervention between the treatment group and the control group (p<0.05). To reinforce children's dental health habits at home, it is advisable to involve parents in dental health education programs, as their information and resources are integral to providing support and monitoring.

Abstract

Dental and oral health has an important role and impact on general health conditions and child development. One of the efforts to prevent dental disease early in children can be done through promotion and education about children 's dental health to parents and teachers as the closest people to the child. The purpose of this study is to determine the determinants of the implementation of dental health promotion by teachers and parents in elementary school children in Aceh Besar District. The research design method is observational analytic with a cross-sectional study approach. The subjects in this study were 110 teachers and 110 parents of elementary school children that carried out by purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out directly from respondents using a validated questionnaire. The statistical tests used were the chi square test and the logistic regression test. The results of this study indicate that the factors of knowledge, attitude, action, availability of facilities and infrastructure, motivation and participation of teachers and parents have a significant influence on the implementation of dental health promotion in elementary school children. In the subject of teachers, the most dominant variables influencing the implementation of dental health promotion in children are the availability of facilities and infrastructure (p = 0.004, Exp (B) = 5.704) and motivation (p = 0.030, Exp (B) = 2.914). In the subject of parents, the most dominant variables are participation (p = 0.000, Exp (B) = 12.803) and motivation (p = 0.001, Exp (B) = 8.899). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the availability of facilities, participation, motivation and knowledge from parents and teachers are key factors in the success of implementing dental health promotion in elementary school children. Holistic interventions and approaches are needed, so as to provide a positive impact on the implementation of dental health promotion in elementary school children.

Lack of fluor can also cause tooth decay. In this community service, the community's knowledge about fluoride was increased to prevent dental caries by using the Lecture, Question and Answer, Demonstration, Discussion, and Simulation methods. Based on the results of community service that has been carried out, it can be concluded that there is an increase in public knowledge about fluor in preventing dental caries in the Lamraya Aceh Besar village community. DMF-T average: 3.1 (medium category). The purpose of this activity is to increase mother's knowledge about dental caries in an effort to maintain children's dental and oral health in Gampong Lam Ue, Aceh Besar District. In this community service, education was carried out to increase mother's knowledge about children's dental and oral health by counseling using the Lecture, Questions and Answers, Demonstration, Discussion and Simulation methods. The results of community service that have been carried out show that there is an increase in mother's knowledge in maintaining oral and dental hygiene in children with an increase before the intervention (pre-test) in the poor category (70.0%) and after the intervention (post test) in the category good (93.3%). Mothers are expected to increase information and knowledge about dental caries and maintenance of children's dental health through counseling and other information media both on the internet and mass media, dental and oral health books or can consult directly with dentists/dental nurses about their children's dental and oral health.
