Abstract

The documentary film "Museum Perkebunan Indonesia" by Fabio Fahrezi Canavaro uses the expository technique to present the history of plantations in Indonesia in a factual and educational manner. This technique emphasizes the clear delivery of information through authoritative narration, visual archives, and expert interviews, providing the audience with a deeper understanding. The documentary is structured in a chronological narrative, starting with the early history of plantations during the colonial era, the post-independence developments, and the relevance of plantations in the modern era. Observations of the film reveal the use of visual archives, such as old plantation photos, historical documents, and colonial maps, as well as interviews with historians and plantation practitioners, enriching the narrative. The combination of clear verbal narration and visual evidence strengthens the presented information, making it easier to comprehend. The expository technique successfully changes the perception of plantation history, which was previously considered monotonous, into something more engaging and relevant. This documentary not only serves as a medium for historical education but also provides a fresh perspective on the role of plantations as a key pillar of Indonesia’s economy. Through this approach, the film serves as an effective example of expository technique in historical documentary filmmaking in Indonesia, encouraging the audience to explore often-overlooked history.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of the panning technique in creating visual tension in the film “Tarung Sarung” (2020), an Indonesian action-adventure film that blends action with the local culture of Makassar. The panning technique, which involves the horizontal movement of the camera to follow the subject or expand the space, is used strategically in key scenes such as fight sequences, chases, and character interactions to enhance the dynamics and intensity of the story. A qualitative approach with descriptive analysis methods was used to explore how this technique influences the audience's perception and supports the film's narrative. The analysis reveals that panning not only clarifies movement in action scenes but also adds emotional depth and showcases the beauty of Indonesian culture and landscapes. This technique is effective in creating tension and directing the audience's attention to important elements of the story. This study is expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of the use of cinematographic techniques in enriching the movie-watching experience, particularly in action and locally rooted genres.

Abstract

The adaptation of a novel into a film, known as ekranisasi, is a challenging process due to the differences between the two mediums, namely literature and visual storytelling. This study examines the ekranisasi process of the novel Mariposa by Luluk Hadiya Fauzia, directed by Fajar Bustomi. The purpose of this research is to analyze the extent to which the Mariposa film retains the core narrative of the novel and how cinematographic elements are used to replace the internal narration found in the literary work. Through a qualitative approach and literature study, the research reveals that, despite significant changes in character development and plot structure, the main themes of teenage love, perseverance, and self-growth are preserved. The film employs cinematographic techniques, such as lighting, color, and shot composition, to more directly depict the emotions and internal conflicts of the main characters. Additionally, symbolism, such as the butterfly representing transformation, strengthens the themes and moral messages conveyed. The findings of this study show that the Mariposa film successfully offers a new experience for the audience and demonstrates that novel-to-film adaptations can succeed, even with changes in storytelling methods, as long as the essence of the literary work is maintained.
