Abstract

(Genealogy of Islamic law studies among Islamic universities has become dynamic and transformative. The genealogy has been transformed since the scientific networks existed in state of Islamic university. These networks eventually form two typologies of Islamic law studies which are reconstruction of mazhab and interpretative reconstruction. The genealogical process exists without formal and structural borders while using interdisciplinary approach from social science. It proves that Islamic law has exprienced a dynamic process which is indicated by new perspectives, that rooted from old approaches and develops in the frame of three principles which are diversity, change and continuity)

Abstract

The movement of humanities solidarity that is widely voiced is the women's movement specifically to wear the hijab (hijab) as a form of solidarity with Muslims. women take a role that is based on the awareness of the importance of togetherness wearing headscarves as a symbol of strength to reject any rhetoric of hatred on any basis, be it identity, religion, race, and ethnicity. This paper describes the veiled women's movement as a form of humanitarian solidarity in the aftermath of the New Zealand tragedy. A descriptive qualitative study of library research was conducted using the Durkheiminism approach. This study produces findings that the hijab has a symbol of religious meaning that is closely related to solidarity and social identity. The veil becomes a symbol of social solidarity as well as resistance to abuse. The hijab movement was born as a collective act to revive the spirit of togetherness among religious followers in combating various acts of radicalism and terrorism.

Abstract

The polemic of hadith authority seems to be endlessly debated by Western and Eastern scholars, Muslims as well as non-Muslims. Aisha Y. Musa reconstructed the debate and discourse of the authority of prophetic traditions by looking at the early manuscripts of the hadith experts. Musa also presented the narratives of the opposition of hadith in the digital era. This debate shows that the authority of hadith did not always enjoy such widespread acceptance. Opposition to the hadith has emerged among Muslims from the first century and has not been limited to one era only, but until now in our contemporary digital era. The polemics are, however, not influenced by Western scholarship and orientalists. On the contrary, it is more response from Muslims to the elevation of the hadith along with the Qur’an as the duality of revelation.

Abstract

Abstract This article aims to become a preliminary record about mainstreaming religious moderation in the digital space to spread moderation and tolerant values in religious understanding. The digital world provides a buffet of religious narratives that are free of access and often used by certain groups to foster conflict and revive identity politics marked by fading affiliation with religious institutions, shifting religious authority, strengthening individualism, and changing from pluralism to tribalism. The mainstreaming of religious moderation in the digital space is a must to deal with. Islamic higher education institutions should strengthen religious moderation content through digital space as a counter-narrative. It means giving a religious framing which is substantive and essential that is being moderate and tolerant.

Abstract

This article discusses the ideological contestation of the two mass organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), that are the spearhead of the two paradigms in determining the beginning of the month of qamariah. Hisab is initiated by Muhammadiyah and rukyat is pioneered by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). These two paradigms are the cause of the emergence of tension conflict due to the non-uniformity of the method of determining the beginning of the qamariah month in Indonesia. By using a power relations approach and reading of religious commodification, this article concludes that fragmentation of religious authority has given rise to a real phenomenon in the midst of society in the form of ideological political contestation played by two large mass organizations in Indonesia in determining the beginning of the qamariah month, NU and Muhammadiyah. The conception of power relations with the government is a problem that is often used as a basis for maintaining ideology and belief in a paradigm that has long been built. Moreover, religious issues drawn in ideological interests have led to a layer of group fanaticism which often makes religion a commodification of pragmatic interests.

Abstract

AbstractThis article aims at explaining the ideological political contestation in determining the beginning and end of the qamariah month in Indonesia by using a religious commodification approach. Religious issues that drawn in ideological interest have led to group fanaticism which makes religion as part of commodification in the construct of pragmatic interests. Two paradigms of Hisab and Rukyat become a symbol of differences in determining the beginning and end of the qamariah month in Indonesia. The ideological and political interpretation was born from this debate. In its history, the ideology of socio-religious organization has become a commodity, including in determining the beginning and end of the qamariah month. Nahdlatul and Muhammadiyah carried out commodification by carrying different views of the government’s decision based on their dissatisfaction in determining the beginning and end of the qamariah month. Kata Kunci: Religious commodification, Determination of the Beginning of Qamariyah, NU, Muhammadiyah

Abstract

The Indonesian Anti-Hadith Group (AHG) thought has never been extinguished. No matter how big the public’s rejection of their ideas, that’s how significant their resistance is. This article aims to reveal the Anti Hadith discourse, especially in post-secularism, which is considered momentum for religious openness. Through the virtual ethnography method, this article argues that in the post-secular era, the activities of AHG followers are increasingly dynamic. They build the network, revive and publish the founders’ thoughts, and appeal to followers through digital platforms. Post-secularism, which is marked by the decline of the privatization of religion in the public sphere, opens up opportunities for Islamic discourses, including the Anti-hadith discourse. The implication, on the one hand, is that religion is no longer a matter of privacy that is separated from the public sphere. On the other hand, the current Anti-Hadith thought potentially challenges the sources of Islamic law. This fact becomes a paradox that post-secularism is usually characterized by religious desire. Still, on the contrary, the presence of AHG stimulated controversies in the mid of Indonesian Muslim communities.

Abstract

Violence in the name of religion has never completely disappeared from discourse on religious life. Surprisingly, Islamic law is used as the basis for committing acts of violence damaging interreligious relations. There is a gap between the goals of Islamic law and practice in society. This article aims to unpack the wasatiyah approach provided by Khaled Abou El-Fadl in Islamic law discourses. This research is a qualitative method using library research, which obtains information from books, articles, and journals. This research concludes that El-Fadl provides an essential concept known in contemporary Islamic law as al-wasatiyah by integrating various scientific disciplines to strengthen human dignity. El-Fadl offers a moderate-humanist approach as a system that is considered more holistic and comprehensive in Islamic law, especially in constructing texts, understanding the context, and optimizing legal reasoning based on maqasid al-shariah through independent reasoning. This article shows that El-Fadl allows greetings to non-Muslims, greetings of Christmas to non-Muslims, interacts with non-Muslims, and elects non-muslim leaders. El-Fadl believes in strengthening the theological basis of pluralism, which requires tolerance as a pathway for creating a mutually productive life together.
