Abstract

This article discusses religious mobility in the lives of urban Muslim society in Australia by investigating organizational projects and religious practices. This paper uses ethnographic fieldwork consisting of in-depth interviews and hang-out in the organization meeting and gatherings among urban Muslim society in Australia. This paper argues that although urban Muslim society in Australia is associated with a Muslim minority, they contribute significantly to the development of Islamic education, Islamic altruism, and spirituality performance. Urban Muslim society in Australia demonstrates social sensitivity by establishing social institutions to show their embodied Muslim identity, such as Islamic Society of Melbourne Eastern Region (ISOMER) in Melbourne, Islamic Science and Research (ISRA) in Sydney, and Australian Sufi Association (ASA). They show their religious mobility as well as their religious practices as part of an agent of social change by promoting community engagement as an embodiment of social solidarity.

Abstract

This article discusses the legal thought of A. Qodri Azizy combines three materials of national law in Indonesia. This article focuses on the Islamic legal thought of Qodri which is based on the narrative of the flexibility between Islamic law and general law based on compatibility within Indonesian context. Qodri used a concept called Eklektisisme Hukum to unify the all materials of national law. Qodri offers Islamic law as a product of knowledge (ijtihad) that can be reconstructed as a system that is considered to be more holistic and comprehensive. In the development of national law, Qodri refused to formalize Islamic law in Indonesia in its application. He relies more on scientific dialectics that can be accepted democratically. Qodri argues that the realization of Indonesian law requires a collective effort to eliminate divisions in certain areas. According to this article, Qodri refused the formalization of Islamic law in line with his approach to refused of Western law with an absolute paradigm. On another hand, he refused customary law. According to Qodri’s legal thought, each legal building has a link to be integrated with the Indonesian context by integrating various disciplines to build a spirit of national legal with Indonesian characterictic. At this point, Qodri’s eclecticism approach finds its relevance in integrating of general law and Islamic law which is based on the middle path of national compromise.

Abstract

The interrelation between the Islamic faith and consumerism has evoked abundant of religious expressions among Indonesian Muslims as well as identity contests and public piety. Despite the fact that consumerism is irrelevant to many developed countries and has shifted into post-consumerism culture, Indonesian Muslims are keen on practicing consumerism in every aspect of life, including religious practices. This article discusses religious commodification aspects within the practice of polygamy among Indonesian urban Muslims, especially the trend of polygamous marriage promoted on online media. It is through virtual ethnography methods on two distinctive polygamous groups, namely Forum Poligami Indonesia (Indonesian Polygamy Forum) and Rabbanian Family, that the data were gathered. We propose that polygamy has become commodified like any other economic objects due to freedom of expression brought about by democratic atmosphere and development of online media. Moreover, the rise of popular Islam that has conservative tendency, as expressed by middle-class Muslims in Indonesia, has become a strong indication of such a practice.

Abstract

This article examines the model for mainstreaming religious moderation for the millennial generation that is vulnerable to the movement for religious exclusivity. The religious spirit of the millennial generation has been coloured by extreme legal-formal thoughts and views that have implications for the existential destruction of religious moderation values and the growth of intolerance. This article focuses on studying Gerakan Siswa Moderat (GSM)/ the Moderate Student Movement initiated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Lumajang Regency to create religious moderation activators among madrasah students. Retrieval of field data used a qualitative model. Data collection was carried out using observation techniques and presented in descriptive writing to describe the phenomena, situations and conditions that took place during the launch of the GSM program. The research results show that although madrasah students are vulnerable to exposure to radicalism and tolerance due to natural factors that are part of the digital age, those who are members of GSM become agents as well as ambassadors for driving religious moderation in three actions at once, i.e. linking past and present religious awareness, being an adhesive for collective religious identity, and being a communicator of narratives and religious messages that are intact, tolerant and peaceful. The strengthening was conducted through a moderation school program and interfaith dialogue.

Abstract

The Murabitun World Movement promotes the gold dinar and silver dirham as authentic Islamic currency tools. However, their vision of establishing an independent Islamic currency is rejected by the socio-political dynamics of the communities’ home countries. Using Talal Asad’s theory of Islam as a discursive tradition, the study investigates the local practices of the Murabitun among Indonesian Muslims, with particular attention to their cultural identity. This study relies much on online data and cyber resources. The Indonesian Murabitun actively promoted the circulation of the gold dinar and silver dirham as an Islamic currency at the Pasar Muamala (exchange market) in Madiun and Yogyakarta. The Indonesian Murabitun movement was initially established in Depok, West Java by Zaim Saidi with his creation of the Pasar Muamala. After Zaim Saidi was formally charged with violating the currency law, his movement lose much its influence. However, utilizing the dynamics of the socio-political landscape this movement has continued to be actively involved in promoting the gold dinar and silver dirham currency—as an alternative transaction tool alongside the regular currency—on digital media platforms.

Abstract

This article discusses the ideological contestation of the two mass organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), that are the spearhead of the two paradigms in determining the beginning of the month of qamariah. Hisab is initiated by Muhammadiyah and rukyat is pioneered by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). These two paradigms are the cause of the emergence of tension conflict due to the non-uniformity of the method of determining the beginning of the qamariah month in Indonesia. By using a power relations approach and reading of religious commodification, this article concludes that fragmentation of religious authority has given rise to a real phenomenon in the midst of society in the form of ideological political contestation played by two large mass organizations in Indonesia in determining the beginning of the qamariah month, NU and Muhammadiyah. The conception of power relations with the government is a problem that is often used as a basis for maintaining ideology and belief in a paradigm that has long been built. Moreover, religious issues drawn in ideological interests have led to a layer of group fanaticism which often makes religion a commodification of pragmatic interests.

Abstract

This research examines how urban Muslim communities in Purwokerto understand and practice religion in the area of muamalah (social relationships between people). Religious practice in urban Muslim communities is different from other religious communities. The intersection between the reality of modernity, Islamicity, and identity provides a model for distinguishing contemporary Muslim religious practices. This study is based on field research employing a phenomenological approach. Participatory observation was used to collect data from two mosques in Purwokerto City: the General Soedirman Grand Mosque and the Gelora Indah Mosque. Both mosques serve as the hub of religious discourse for Purwokerto's urban Muslim community, and they host a variety of religious studies on a regular basis. In-depth interviews were performed with worshippers from the two mosques by the researchers. Secondary data is derived from studies, journals, books, and other sources. This article concludes that urban Muslim identity is manifested in the shift away from usury practices and the choice of halal products. Studies in urban mosques and social media cannot isolate the rhetoric from the social formation of urban Muslims. In this environment, hijrah (shifting paradigm) has emerged as one of the trends that give rise to new nuances and views of any Islamic legal concept that is an annotated version of older works. Because of these shifts in preferences, the discipline of Islamic law, particularly fiqh muamalah, has become one of the most important areas for the expression of religious experience in the lives of urban Muslims
