Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study discusses the representation of Islamic law in the lives of Iranian women through an analysis of Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical comic Persepolis. The background of this study stems from the socio-political changes following the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, which made Islamic law the basis of state policy through the Wilāyat al-Faqīh system. This policy had a significant impact on the regulation of women's bodies, public spaces, and identities, particularly through dress codes, moral control, and social restrictions. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with literature study and visual text analysis methods. Persepolis is analyzed as a cultural text using gender theory, Stuart Hall's theory of representation, and contemporary fiqh and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah perspectives. The results show that Persepolis represents the application of Islamic law in Iran more as an instrument of patriarchal political power than as a contextual and welfare-oriented practice of sharia. This comic depicts how women's bodies and lives become objects of state surveillance through the enforcement of the hijab, the segregation of social spaces, and the criminalization of behavior deemed deviant from the state's official morality. These findings reveal a gap between the normative principles of Islamic law, which emphasize justice and human dignity, and the state's repressive legal practices against women. Thus, Persepolis serves as a cultural critique of the rigid application of Islamic law and its insensitivity to gender experiences.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the issue of creation ethics in the film Frankenstein (2025) from the perspective of Islamic legal theory (Uṣūl al-Fiqh), particularly through the process of istinbāṭ al-ḥukm in addressing contemporary legal problems (al-nawāzil). The film portrays the creation of artificial life driven by scientific ambition while neglecting ethical considerations and moral responsibility. This research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis to examine key scenes and dialogues related to the act of creation, the creator–creature relationship, and the resulting social consequences. The analysis is conducted through the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, including the principles of ḥifẓ al-nafs (protection of life), ḥifẓ al-‘aql (protection of intellect), ḥifẓ al-‘ird (protection of human dignity), sadd al-dharī‘ah (blocking the means to harm), ma’ālāt al-af‘āl (consideration of consequences), and al-ḍarar yuzāl (harm must be eliminated). The findings indicate that the act of creation depicted in Frankenstein (2025) cannot be normatively justified within Islamic law, as it fails to uphold public welfare, disregards the consequences of actions, and results in harm and social inequality. This study highlights the methodological relevance of Uṣūl al-Fiqh in addressing ethical challenges posed by modern science and technology, emphasizing the necessity of integrating scientific advancement with ethical responsibility and the objectives of Islamic law.

Abstract

This study examines spiritual struggle and moral guidance among Muslim diaspora as represented in Sami Yusuf’s song lyrics using a qualitative descriptive method. As Bryman (2004:269) states, qualitative research prioritizes interpretation of textual meaning rather than quantification; therefore, this study analyzes selected lyric excerpts from Came To Me, Make Me Strong, and You through the framework of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah, specifically ḥifẓ al-dīn (protection of faith), ḥifẓ al-nafs (protection of psychological well-being), and ḥifẓ al-‘aql (protection of intellect). In line with Wahid (2023), Maqāṣid provides a contextual ethical approach to contemporary challenges, while Auda emphasizes its orientation toward human welfare (maṣlaḥah). The findings show that Sami Yusuf’s lyrics portray faith restoration amid disorientation (ḥifẓ al-dīn), emotional resilience and inner healing under pressure (ḥifẓ al-nafs), and moral reasoning guided by divine orientation within ideological plurality (ḥifẓ al-‘aql). Overall, the songs function as contemporary Islamic literary texts that offer spiritual and moral guidance for Muslim diaspora navigating modern uncertainties.

Abstract

The hijab phenomenon in Indonesia has undergone a radical transformation from a static theological signifier to a dynamic visual commodity in the digital era. This research aims to analyze the shift in religious authority and the interpretation of hijab verses (Surah Al-Ahzab: 59 and Surah An-Nur: 31) by comparing the official narrative of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) and the hijab fashion narratives on TikTok. Using Hans Robert Jauss’s Aesthetic of Reception theory, specifically the concepts of "horizon of expectation" and "aesthetic distance," the study employs a comparative analysis on diachronic and synchronic axes. The findings reveal a sharp divergence in reception: Kemenag builds a normative-institutional horizon focusing on legal compliance and moral protection, whereas TikTok constructs an aesthetic-digital horizon driven by algorithmic logic, visibility, and consumerism. This shift demonstrates a radical decentralization of religious authority, where digital influencers act as new interpreters prioritizing "visual orthopraxy" over traditional orthodoxy. Consequently, aesthetics has become a new regime of truth for the younger generation. This study concludes that religious institutions must adopt visual literacy and new interpretive approaches to remain relevant within modern visual culture.
