Abstract

This study investigates the motivations driving young Indonesian travelers, particularly Millennials and Generation Z, to choose Vietnam as a travel destination. The research addresses a key gap in the literature by exploring the travel motivation using push and pull motivational factors. Using a quantitative approach, the study employed a self-administered questionnaire, distributed both online and offline to 144 young Indonesian travelers. The gathered data were analyzed using factor analysis to reduce the 39 push and pull motivational factors into a new set of underlying factors. Informal interviews and observation were also performed to support the analysis. The findings indicate that push motivation (internal psychological motivations), comprises of social achievement, learning motivation, stress relief, and social bonding were found to be four underlying push factors that motivate young Indonesian travelers to visit Vietnam. Meanwhile, travel standards, affordability, tourist amenities, cultural experiences, and natural landscapes appeared to be the pull factors. This finding serves as one of initial efforts to examine young Indonesian traveler’s behavior as the main target market for Vietnam Tourism. The study's implications also suggest that this study could provide a basis for Indonesian government to develop a more effective marketing strategies aimed at making local destinations more appealing to this segment compared to overseas options such as Vietnam. Furthermore, it is advisable for future research to study the characteristics of other generational groups as this could reveal significant differences compared to the younger generation.

Abstract

The Indonesian government positions tourism villages as a strategic instrument for advancing sustainability, yet the determinants of their success remain underexplored. This study investigates how destination competitiveness, community participation, and local empowerment shape the development of Bilebante Village, Lombok. Previous studies have addressed isolated issues such as participation or empowerment, but none have identified the core reasons for the village’s overall success. This gap is critical because identifying what truly makes a village succeed is essential for advancing tourism village development. A qualitative case study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with six purposively selected Pokdarwis members and participatory observation across the village’s zones. Data were analyzed with Miles and Huberman’s interactive model through thematic coding on competitiveness, participation, and empowerment. The findings show that Bilebante’s success emerges from the interaction of three interconnected factors. Its green tourism attractions provide a competitive advantage that is reinforced by strong community participation. Through this participation, residents gain skills and confidence, creating empowerment that drives further innovation and, in turn, strengthens competitiveness. Theoretically, this study contributes to rural tourism literature by showing how competitiveness, participation, and empowerment operate in a mutually reinforcing cycle rather than in isolation. Practically, it highlights that government and external support should integrate these three dimensions, and that initiatives such as community learning hubs and inter-village exchange programs can help replicate Bilebante’s model in other contexts.

Abstract

Bilebante Tourism Village is one of the destinations currently preparing to participate in the Best Tourism Village UNWTO 2026. In this process, the need for systematic and credible documentation has become increasingly important. This community service activity was carried out to address this need, with the primary goal of enhancing the scientific literacy of Pokdarwis DWH Bilebante members through technology-based writing training aimed at producing high-quality tourism knowledge archives. The training was attended by six participants who play a key role in preparing documents for the competition and was conducted in person. The activity methods included a self assessment pre-test, interactive material delivery, discussion sessions, article writing practice, and a self assessment post-test. The materials covered an introduction to scientific articles, paragraph structure, article writing techniques, and the use of ChatGPT for drafting and editing texts. The results of the pre-test, post-test, and article writing practice showed an increase in participants' understanding of scientific writing. The post-test score for the question regarding the ability to write AI-assisted articles increased by 66.6 percent compared to the pre-test. In addition, participants were able to produce complete articles on the theme "Sustainable Tourism Strategies in Bilebante Village," covering social, environmental, and economic dimensions. The quality of the writing demonstrated a good understanding of article structure and effective use of technology to support the writing process. Thus, this activity proved effective in building basic competencies in technology-based scientific writing. In addition to improving understanding, the training also encouraged active community involvement in documentation practices that are relevant and oriented toward the development of a sustainable tourism village.

Abstract

This study investigates how the Glodok Walking Tour can be optimized using the 4E Experience Framework—Entertainment, Education, Esthetics, Escapism—to enhance tourist involvement in cultural preservation. Although Jakarta is rich in heritage, tourism strategies often emphasize its modern image, resulting in the underutilization of areas like Glodok. As one of Southeast Asia’s oldest Chinatowns, Glodok offers cultural, and culinary attractions that align with contemporary tourists’ preferences for immersive experiences. While walking tours provide a sustainable platform for cultural engagement, existing designs often lack comprehensive experiential quality. This study seeks to address how the Glodok Walking Tour can be enhanced through the 4E framework to strengthen tourist involvement in heritage preservation. A qualitative case study was conducted, combining interviews with a tour guide and four tourists and participatory observation during the Glodok Walking Tour by Jakarta Good Guide. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model, involving data reduction, thematic coding based on the 4E framework, and conclusion drawing. Triangulation ensured validity. Results Findings revealed gaps across all dimensions: weak interpretive techniques and lack of hands-on activities (Entertainment); information overload and limited contemporary relevance (Education); poor environmental conditions and insufficient engagement with landmarks (Esthetics); and restricted immersion due to noise and lack of local engagement (Escapism).Optimizing the Glodok Walking Tour through improved storytelling, multisensory learning, enhanced environmental quality, and direct engagement with local stakeholders can transform it into a more meaningful experience. These enhancements foster deeper emotional connections and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of collective community participation in Sade Village, one of the recognized tourism villages in Central Lombok. Despite its long-standing status as a tourist destination, Sade’s progress toward achieving Desa Mandiri remains hindered by limited collective involvement. This condition raises questions about the community’s role in advancing sustainable tourism. To explore this issue, the research investigates residents’ perceptions of tourism as a shared good, the motivations that drive participation, and the barriers that restrict effective collective action. A qualitative case study was conducted through in-depth interviews and participatory observations with residents and key stakeholders during a three-day field visit in June 2025. The data were analyzed thematically using the Miles and Huberman framework, with credibility strengthened through triangulation, expert review, and inter-coder reliability checks. The findings reveal that while residents recognize tourism as beneficial for the community, their participation remains limited. Material incentives, particularly financial benefits that support daily needs, serve as the strongest motivators, complemented by solidary incentives expressed in communal bonds and cultural preservation. However, these drivers seldom translate into coordinated action due to a passive participation mindset, limited awareness of innovation, and the absence of formal organizational structures. The study concludes that low participation in Sade Village reflects cultural and structural constraints rather than disinterest, enriching CAT’s propositions on institutional emergence and free-rider dynamics. It recommends demonstration-based approaches, selective financial incentives, and formal tourism institutions, linked to national programs such as ADWI, to foster sustainable, community-led development in other villages.

Abstract

Global climate change has had a significant impact on the tourism sector, particularly in marine destinations that depend on the stability of coastal ecosystems. The Seribu Islands, as one of Indonesia’s prime tourism destinations, face serious threats such as sea-level rise, coastal erosion, ecosystem degradation, and an increased frequency of tidal flooding, all of which have implications for both environmental and economic sustainability of local communities. This study aims to identify and analyze the adaptive behavioral patterns of local communities in responding to climate change challenges to tourism. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design in four inhabited islands (Tidung, Pramuka, Pari, and Kelapa). Informants were selected through purposive sampling and included homestay owners, tour guides, tourism-related MSME actors, marine transport providers, community leaders, and environmental activists. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that local communities apply adaptation strategies across three main dimensions: (1) economic, through business diversification, digital innovation, and the utilization of local resources; (2) environmental, through ecosystem conservation, participatory waste management, and the efficient use of energy and water; and (3) socio-institutional, through collective action, strengthening of social networks, and collaboration with government, universities, and NGOs. These results underscore that successful adaptation is determined by the integration of economic, environmental, and social aspects, and is not uniform across the islands, with Pramuka Island demonstrating greater preparedness compared to the others. This research provides important implications for sustainable tourism development policies that are adaptive to climate change, emphasizing the need for policy support, institutional capacity building, and community participation in maintaining socio-ecological resilience in coastal areas.
