Abstract

Lead significantly affects health because of its sensitivity to the central nervous system and rapid absorption rate. The phytochemicals included in celery, such as flavonoids, may mitigate lead-induced kidney damage. This research aimed to determine how administering celery extract affected the expression of the Caspase-3 gene and the kidney TNF-α gene in Rattus Norvegicus Wistar white rats exposed to lead. The research method true experiment examined the effects of 80 mg/day celery extract on Caspase-3 gene expression and renal TNF-α gene expression in rats exposed to lead. Each of the three groups will include six rats; there will be eighteen male Wistar rats in the study. The study used SPSS 26.0 and the Saphiro Wills test to analyze data on TNF-α and Caspase 3 expression in rats exposed to lead acetate (Pb). The results showed a normal distribution for the negative control group (K-) and the positive control group (K+) and a normal distribution for the treatment group (P). However, the paired t-test showed significant differences in all treatment groups (p <0.05), indicating a normal distribution in the data. The study concludes the impact of celery extract on kidney function in lead-exposed Wistar rats, revealing various active compounds like flavonoids. Despite insignificant caspase 3 reduction, flavonoids showed potential in mitigating lead-induced kidney damage.

Abstract

Ageing weakens the skin's protective layer, causing pigmentation, inflammation, and cancer. Environmental hazards like pollution and UV radiation harm the skin. Antioxidants, like Eucalyptus globulus, protect against free radicals, making them valuable in medicinal use. The study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Eucalyptus administration in inhibiting skin ageing in rats exposed to ultraviolet-B light. A true experiment was conducted to examine the effectiveness of Eucalyptus in reducing skin ageing in Wistar rats exposed to ultraviolet-B radiation. The study used the "3R Principle" and SPSS to analyse the relationship between collagen quantity, Eucalyptus, and UVB radiation. The study found normal distribution for the control and treatment groups, with a significance of 0.200 and 0.091, respectively. The Levene test showed homogeneity and a T-test result 0.000, indicating a significant difference. The control group had a moderate collagen density, while the treatment group with Eucalyptus extract had a tighter collagen density. The study concludes that the Eucalyptus tree extracts, including tannins, saponins, and flavonoids, have been found to have anti-ageing and collagen-increasing effects in mice exposed to UVB light. The treatment group showed significantly increased collagen density, indicating potential anti-ageing properties in the treatment group.

Abstract

The global focus on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has been growing, particularly chronic degenerative diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM), which is now a serious threat to public health worldwide. According to WHO data from 2008, these diseases account for 55% of total deaths in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, the prevalence of type 2 DM has significantly increased, with over 10 million sufferers aged 20-79 years in 2017, making it a significant health management challenge. To address this, BPJS Health launched the Chronic Disease Management Program (Prolanis) to optimize patients' quality of life while maintaining healthcare cost efficiency. Families play a crucial role in supporting DM patients in managing their disease effectively, socially, and in healthcare. This study aims to analyze the relationship between family functioning and the quality of life of type 2 DM patients at the Medan Johor Public Health Center (Puskesmas). Using a cross-sectional study design, data were collected through the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire to measure quality of life and the Family APGAR questionnaire to assess family functioning. The results showed that most respondents were women, had a high school education, and had been suffering from type 2 DM for less than 10 years. Most family functions were classified as highly functional. Still, no significant relationship was found between APGAR scores and quality of life in the four domains (physical health, psychological, social relationships, and environment).

Abstract

Measurement of stress levels is important considering the long and stressful study period that medical students have to go through. This study aims to measure the difference in stress levels of the first year and third-year medical education students. The approach used in this study is a one-time unpaired numerical comparative analysis of two groups with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Universitas Prima Indonesia for 2 (months) starting from February 2022–March 2022. A total of 76 subjects were involved, and each group consisted of 38 subjects. Determination of research subjects was carried out by purposive sampling technique with inclusion criteria in the form of the first-year and third-year preclinical students. In collecting data, the researcher used The Kessler Psychological Distress-10 (K-10) questionnaire. The collected data was then analyzed using an unpaired t-test. Furthermore, the results of the analysis are presented in tabular form along with interpretations. From the results of the study, it can be seen that many first-year and third-year students experience stress, and there is no significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, the results of the study showed that there was no significant difference in the K-10 scores for first-year and third-year students based on place of residence, ethnicity, and area of origin. The phenomenon of stress in medical students needs attention from the university. Preventing an academic environment by designing a curriculum that promotes collaboration rather than competition as well as providing counseling services is recommended as a preventive measure.

Abstract

The use of antibiotics in surgical patients aims to reduce Surgical Site Infection (SSI) so that it can reduce the number of patient admissions to hospital. Fully used antibiotics in patient’s cancontributes to the spread of antibiotic resistance, so it is necessary to evaluate the use of antibiotics in hospitals.Quantitative and qualitative assessment of antibiotic use is an important metric in evaluating rational antibiotic prescribing and controlling drug resistance. This study aims to evaluate the use of antibiotics in surgical patients at Royal Prima Marelan Hospital based on assessing the quantity and quality of use. This research is a retrospective study using an observational-analytic design using a quantitative and qualitative approach with secondary data referring to the medical records of 200 surgical patients who received antibiotic therapy and were treated at the Royal Prima Marelan Hospital in the period June - November 2022. Quantitative analysis was carried out using the method ATC/DDD and qualitative analysis using Gyssens criteria. Correlation analysis uses the contingency coefficient statistical test. The results of the quantity of antibiotic use show that the total DDD/100 patient-days value is 77.6 and the quality of antibiotic use using the Gyssens criteria is appropriate/rational, with the most widely used antibiotic being ceftriaxone and the majority of patients' length of stay being ≤ 7 days. This research shows that age (p=0.761), gender (p=0.920), and quality of antibiotic use (p=0.610) do not correlate with length of stay in surgical patients at Royal Prima Marelan Hospital for the period June - November 2022.
