Abstract

Pre-service teachers' ability to construct and conduct assessment has been a point of emphasis for decades, and rightfully so. It is crucial that they acquire the necessary knowledge and abilities in their language assessment course during their pre-service teacher education to effectively assess students in their future professional routines. The purpose of this research was to determine if and how pre-service English teachers' (PSETs) satisfaction with their language assessment course corresponded with their level of readiness. 51 out of 56 PSETs participated since they met the two requirements (passing the language assessment course and enrolling in TAP). The Fulcher (2012) language assessment literacy questionnaire was adapted and disseminated. The questions were organized into four categories for the purpose of analysis: overarching principles and concepts in linguistic assessment; designing language assessment; scoring test items and analyzing test results. Results demonstrated that LAL satisfaction was not congruent with assessment readiness. There was a "neutral" level of satisfaction among participants (51.5 percent), but they were nearly set to begin practicing assessment at their TAP (78.5 percent). Additionally included are statistics that are specific to each of the four categories found in the questionnaire.  In particular, the study suggests that training in evaluating open-response questions and analyzing test items warrants expansion. Additional research could fill in the gap between LAL satisfaction and the PSETs by examining the relationship between the two.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by English teachers in primary schools in Central Lombok and identifies strategies to address these issues. Key barriers include limited teaching resources, socio-economic disparities, and large class sizes, all of which hinder effective English instruction. Teachers face diverse student proficiency levels, cultural influences prioritizing traditional rote-learning methods, and professional isolation that limits collaborative opportunities. The study employs qualitative methods, combining semi-structured interviews with 10 English teachers and structured classroom observations. Interviews explored topics such as resource limitations, training disparities, and student engagement strategies, while classroom observations provided empirical insights into teacher-student interactions, instructional methods, and resource availability. Data were analyzed thematically to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the contextual challenges. Findings highlight the need for professional development programs focused on culturally responsive pedagogies and strategies for addressing linguistic diversity. Collaborative networks and community involvement are recommended to bridge the gap between global English standards and local cultural contexts. By integrating these approaches, this research advocates for targeted interventions to enhance English teaching and learning outcomes in Central Lombok's primary schools.

Abstract

Basic Mandarin Training for Tourism for Lombok Tourism Polytechnic students was held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. This community service program, organized by University of Mataram's Language Academic Support Unit, aimed to introduce Mandarin to students. Participants were students who would be undertaking internships in the hotel industry in Taiwan. The training consisted of two stages: program socialization and the training sessions themselves. The material provided covered Mandarin phonetic basics, Hanzi character writing, and simulation-based conversation practice. Participants learned through role-playing activities in tourism scenarios, such as hotel room bookings and restaurant services. Despite the program's limited duration, participants showed high enthusiasm and actively participated. They were also introduced to using the Pleco application as a tool to support independent learning. Evaluation results indicated that this program was quite effective in providing a basic understanding of Mandarin for Lombok Tourism Polytechnic students, though independent practice in pronunciation is highly needed. Therefore, after the training, participants were advised to integrate applications and AI to support their self-study efforts. With improved Mandarin skills, students are expected to compete in the global tourism industry and provide higher-quality services to Chinese tourists.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (PKM) aims at enhancing the professional capacity of elementary school English teachers in Central Lombok through targeted training on the Paper-Based TOEFL. The program seeks to support educators with a comprehensive understanding of the TOEFL test structure, content areas, and effective strategies. By improving teachers' knowledge and skills in these areas, the program contributes to the overall improvement of English language instruction in schools. The training was implemented in four stages: socialization, training and discussion, mentoring and evaluation. The PKM was conducted at SMAN 1 Praya Barat Daya, Central Lombok, with participation from 18 elementary school English teachers across the region. The outcomes of the program indicate an improvement in the teachers’ ability to answer TOEFL questions, particularly in the Structure and Written Expression (SWE) section.

Abstract

Background: EFL teaching in Indonesian urban and rural schools have been experiencing persistent challenges due to linguistic, cultural, geographical and resources differences. However, these conditions have not been portraited from ecological persepctive of agency. Therefore, this study examines EFL teacher agency and instructional problem-solving in urban and rural Indonesian classrooms Methodology: This mixed-method study involves 129 EFL instructors (85 from rural schools, 44 from urban schools) who completed a survey, and 35 submitted reflective journals. Quantitative data were assessed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were evaluated through thematic analysis. Findings: Both urban and rural EFL teachers faced similar classroom issues like low motivation, vocabulary gaps, and speaking anxiety, though rural teachers linked them to limited resources and urban teachers to distractions and pressure. Urban teachers showed stronger and more consistent agency, especially in autonomy, professional growth, and future goals, while rural teachers drew on deep personal motivation but were often hindered by local challenges. Conclusion: The study shows that teachers’ ecological past experiences, present conditions, and future goals shaped how they solved problems. Rural teachers relied on local resources and flexible strategies, while urban teachers used creative, student-centered methods to build autonomy and global skills, pointing to the need for context-specific support and policies that empower teacher-led innovation. Originality: This study offers how teacher agency is lived out in the everyday problem-solving of EFL classrooms, not just in teachers’ beliefs or intentions. By comparing rural and urban contexts in Indonesia, it reveals how agency looks different across settings and highlights the creativity and resilience of teachers, especially in resource-challenged schools.

Abstract

Subtitling has become a vital tool for disseminating ideas and information through online video. This study takes a deep dive into the translation strategies employed in the subtitling of the acclaimed Netflix documentary series “Our Planet.” Drawing on Gottlieb's established theory of translation techniques for subtitling, this research analyses the subtitling approaches within the episodes of the series. The findings reveal that the transfer strategy presenting direct lexical translation is the dominant approach (71%) used by subtitlers. However, the analysis also uncovers nuanced applications of other strategies, such as expansion, paraphrasing, and condensation, which work in tandem to enhance the clarity and naturalness of the target language subtitles. By examining this rich dataset of documentary video subtitles, this study provides valuable insights into the complex decision-making processes of professional subtitlers especially those that is related to cross-cultural comprehensio. The results suggest that while transfer is the primary technique, subtitlers thoughtfully employ a mix of strategies to deliver an optimal viewing experience to multilingual audiences. This study offers a groundbreaking exploration of the intricacies involved in translating educational and informative video content for global distribution.

Abstract

This community service was conducted to assist the English teachers at Sekolah Dasar Negeri Model Mataram (SDNMM) adapt and adopt the Common European Framework (CEFR) for Languages into the English Curriculum of the school. The activity involved all English teachers at the school (11 teachers) and the assistance was conducted for one week. The adaptation and adoption processes were completed in four stages: (1) mapping out the core competencies of the CEFR for English primary and the core competences of the SDNMM English curriculum, (2) aligning the core competences of English in the school curriculum, (3) modifying the SDNMM English Curriculum. Some factors which inform the reducement and addition of the competences include (1) the students’ existing competencies, (2) teachers’ teaching competencies, (3) the available reseources at the school, and (4) the school vision and mission.

Abstract

This research aims to recognize the factors triggering and foundations affecting teachers’ interactive decisions related to teachers’ personal development. Interactive decisions as teachers’ reaction to an unexpected situation during teaching and learning activities. The participants in this study are 3 (three) English course teachers. The participants were chosen using purposive sampling. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The data then were analyzed using Gomm’s thematic analysis. The results showed that the factors triggering teachers’ interactive decisions were teachers’ assumptions, teachers’ expectations – students’ lack of cooperation, and technical problems; the foundations of the interactive decisions were teacher’s experience, students’ needs, and class management. These findings indicate that making an interactive decision is a complex process. Many situations may trigger it, and teachers have to cope with it instantly without preparation. These unexpected situations require teachers’ quick thinking and reaction which are based on and enrich their personal development.
